Overview

Entity and degree answer

A federated U of T college—not a separate undergraduate destination

The University of St. Michael's College is an independent Catholic university federated with the University of Toronto. For undergraduate planning, St. Michael's is a college within the U of T Faculty of Arts & Science system: students are admitted by U of T, become college members, and graduate with University of Toronto degrees.

Institutional status

Established in 1852 by the Basilian Fathers, St. Michael's is an independent Catholic university and one of three federated colleges within the University of Toronto, alongside Victoria and Trinity.

Undergraduate status

St. Michael's College undergraduates are U of T Faculty of Arts & Science students and receive University of Toronto degrees, with federation giving access to roughly 700 undergraduate programs.

Membership role

The college runs registrarial advising from Brennan Hall, residence for 680 students, awards, first-year seminars, Kelly Library, and community for roughly 5,000 college members.

Catholic identity

Grounded in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition while stating that it welcomes faculty and students from every background who want to participate in its life.

Separate graduate route

The Regis St. Michael's Faculty of Theology, formed when the USMC Faculty of Theology federated with Regis College in 2022, runs graduate and ministry theology degrees—not undergraduate admission.

Use the University of Toronto requirements—not a made-up St. Michael's cutoff

Admission category, prerequisites, grades, supplemental work, deadlines, tuition, and the undergraduate degree come from U of T. Use the University of Toronto admissions guide for the application itself; use this page to compare St. Michael's membership, programs, residence, awards, and community.

2027 pending

UNIVERSITY-LEVEL. U of T's live dates-and-deadlines page is still labelled for 2026 entry: November 7 recommended early consideration, a February 2 final OUAC deadline for Arts & Science St. George, decisions released from January through late May, and September 11 for deferral requests. No Fall 2027 U of T dates are published yet. COLLEGE-LEVEL, St. Michael's publishes no application dates of its own because it does not run an undergraduate application.

The early-November and early-February pattern recurs annually, so treat November 2026 and early February 2027 as working planning dates only—verify future.utoronto.ca and OUAC once the Fall 2027 cycle posts.

Admissions Planning

How St. Michael's College membership works

Apply to a U of T St. George Arts & Science admission category, then list up to three college preferences—or no preference—on the application. St. Michael's does not require a separate college profile, and college membership is confirmed with the U of T offer.

  1. 1. Apply to a University of Toronto St. George Faculty of Arts & Science admission category through OUAC or the applicable U of T application route.
  2. 2. List up to three college preferences on the Arts & Science application, or select no preference.
  3. 3. Rank St. Michael's first if you want its admission awards: the college states preference goes to applicants who select SMC first when admission awards are distributed.
  4. 4. Do not submit a separate St. Michael's applicant profile: U of T says St. Michael's has no additional college application requirement.
  5. 5. Review the college membership named in the U of T offer. Preference is considered but a specific college is not guaranteed.
  6. 6. Apply for residence separately in StarRez and meet the current guarantee, ranking, offer, and deposit steps.

No membership supplement

U of T says St. Michael's has no additional college application requirement. Your admission category may still require a program supplement, so follow the U of T portal checklist.

Preference is not a guarantee

U of T prioritizes stated preferences, but every Arts & Science student is assigned a college and a particular preference is not guaranteed. Membership changes are not normally facilitated.

The college's summer sequence after an offer (2026 intake)

These are the dates the St. Michael's registrar published for students entering in September 2026. The order recurs every year but every date shifts—confirm yours on the college's newly-admitted page once your own offer lands.

  5. June 13, 2026 — mandatory Welcome Day at the college.
  6. July 1, 2026 — ACORN enrolment start times released.
  7. July 13, 2026 — deadline to register with Accessibility Services.

Confirmed

COLLEGE-LEVEL. This is the single college-level decision that changes an outcome: several St. Michael's admission awards require the applicant to have indicated St. Michael's as their first choice of college in the Faculty of Arts & Science, and the college states that preference is given to students who select SMC first when admission awards are distributed. Students are automatically considered on admission and are notified in the letter of offer.

Programs and Pathways

Four sponsored U of T Arts & Science programs

St. Michael's sponsors four distinctive interdisciplinary undergraduate programs. They are open under Faculty of Arts & Science program rules to students across the college system; joining St. Michael's is not a prerequisite for studying them.

Book and Media Studies

Interdisciplinary study of books, print, publishing, media, communication, and material and digital cultures, with a hands-on letterpress component in BMS110Y1 The Printed Book.

Celtic Studies

Interdisciplinary study of the history, mythology, literature, politics, languages, and cultures of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, with Irish-language instruction from absolute beginner level.

Christianity and Culture

Major and Minor plus a distinct Minor in Christianity and Education whose courses are recognized by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association as equivalent to required ministry courses.

Mediaeval Studies

Specialist, Major, or Minor spanning mediaeval history, literature, philosophy, religion, art, languages, and material culture, supported by the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies on campus.

Undergraduate study versus graduate theology

Christianity and Culture is an undergraduate Arts & Science program. The Regis St. Michael's Faculty of Theology is a separate graduate and ministry-focused academic entity. Do not treat its MDiv, MTS, MRE, ThM, DMin, MA, or PhD routes as direct-entry undergraduate programs.

SMC One: the first-year seminars only college members can take

This is the clearest reason to rank St. Michael's. Four small first-year seminars carry international learning components that are unusual anywhere in Canada—but only one of them publishes a cost.

SMC188H1 / SMC189H1

The Gilson Seminar in Faith and Ideas / Faith in Rome

Full-year seminar on Christianity and the arts, science, philosophy, and politics, with an eleven-day learning experience in Rome and Assisi. Published ancillary fee not to exceed $3,000 for room, board, and programming; students pay their own airfare.

SMC165H1

The Boyle Seminar in Scripts and Stories

Celtic influences in the mediaeval world and early books as historical artifacts, with a trip to Dublin after the April exam period. Not eligible for the CR/NCR option.

SMC155H1

The McLuhan Seminar in Creativity and Technology

Creativity and technology in the tradition of Marshall McLuhan, who taught at St. Mike's from 1946 until his death in 1980, with a Silicon Valley trip during reading week.

SMC135H1

The Donovan Seminar in Visual Art and Meaning

Newly listed seminar reading visual art through the St. Michael's and U of T collections. No travel component is published.

All-women residence of roughly 89 residents: 42 singles, 38 doubles, and 9 graduate ensuites. Has its own chapel, dining hall, and fitness room, runs a separate fee schedule, and charges an $11.50-per-semester residence council fee.

Automatic on admission for SMC-first applicants. The exceptions are the Janet Elizabeth Faulds Award, which can be applied for or won by nomination, and the Catholic Women's League scholarship, which is administered externally.

In-course awards

Academic standing, program, community service, year, financial need, or residence can determine eligibility for named awards.

Grants and bursaries

Eligible students generally use U of T's Undergraduate Grant Application in ACORN. Some residence bursaries credit the housing account.

Cycle-label warning

St. Michael's main awards page still labels many sections 2025–2026 and includes past deadlines. Do not copy those dates into a Fall 2027 plan. Use the live applicant portal, ACORN, Award Explorer, and current college notices to confirm values and deadlines.

Who sets your tuition

Confirmed

UNIVERSITY-LEVEL. Membership at St. Michael's creates no separate undergraduate tuition schedule. Tuition is set centrally by the University of Toronto and depends on campus, Faculty of Arts & Science admission category and program, year of study, and domestic or international status. The college's own charges are residence, meal plan, and incidental residence-council fees.

How St. Michael's admission awards are decided

Confirmed

COLLEGE-LEVEL. Incoming students who select St. Michael's as their first choice of college are automatically considered for the college's admission awards on admission, and recipients are notified in the letter of offer. Almost every award is auto-considered; the exceptions published are the Janet Elizabeth Faulds Award, which can be applied for or won by teacher or principal nomination, and the Catholic Women's League of Canada Admission Scholarship, which is administered externally by the Toronto Diocesan Council and submitted directly to the CWL. The college notes award values are subject to change with availability.

Awards that specifically require living in residence

Latest available

COLLEGE-LEVEL. A separate admission-residence award set is contingent on taking a St. Michael's residence place: the Louis L. Odette Residence Scholarship at about $5,400, the C.D. Howe Memorial Residence Scholarship and Wilfred S. McDonnell, Q.C. Residence Scholarship at about $4,000 each, the Rev. John M. Kelly, C.S.B. and Hubert Sceats Memorial Residence Scholarships at $2,000–$5,000, an OTSS Residence Bursary at about $3,000, the Class of 6T5 45th Anniversary Residence Bursary at about $2,000, and the Gerald S. Horgan Residence Award at $1,000, which is open to domestic and international students.

Most of these require Canadian citizenship or permanent residency plus Ontario residency and demonstrated financial need. The residence requirement is real—declining a residence offer can forfeit the award.

In-course awards, grants, and their deadlines

Latest available

COLLEGE-LEVEL. The college runs three award streams after first year. Application-required in-course awards closed at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025 for the 2025–2026 term and include the Patricia A. Massel Bursary and the Antonietta, Felice & Roberto Ciasca Scholarship at $5,000 each and the Michael J. Walker Student Bursary at $2,500. Automatic in-course awards need no application—examples include the John Ward McGovern Scholarship in Celtic Studies at $5,000, the Richard Yee Memorial Bursary at $3,000–$5,000, and the J. Robert S. Prichard and Ann Wilson Prize at about $3,000. Bursaries and grants run through U of T's Undergraduate Grant Application in ACORN, and several credit directly to the residence account.

The awards hub is labelled 2025–2026 and mixes expired deadlines with live 2026 ones (April 3, 2026 for the program travel and research awards, May 1, 2026 for graduation awards). Never copy an October or March date from that page into a future plan without re-checking.

Current aid channels

The U of T aid the college registrar administers

Confirmed

UNIVERSITY-LEVEL money, delivered through the college. The St. Michael's registrar's office lists UTAPS, government aid and OSAP counselling, the UTSU Student Aid Program with bursaries up to $500, the Noah Meltz Program for part-time students, an IT Grant of up to $750 toward laptop costs, and the John H. Moss Scholarship at $20,000 annually. Domestic students complete Need Navigator to receive a UTAPS estimate.

UTAPS and the Noah Meltz Program are need-based and generally require government aid eligibility, so most international students will not qualify—the H. T. Kelly, Unger Family and Horgan awards are the international-eligible college routes.

Student Life and Support

A U of T home base with academic and community support

College membership provides registrar advising, orientation, mentorship, commuter and residence community, student groups, intramurals, awards, and academic support while students use the wider St. George campus. Kelly Library and the Academic Success Centre are prominent St. Michael's resources.

Catholic identity and inclusion

The College's mission is grounded in Catholic intellectual and spiritual traditions while explicitly welcoming students and faculty from every background.

Student government and publications

SMCSU is elected each spring as 13 councillors and funds the college's clubs, running the Michaelmas Celebration, Christmas Market, Formal, and clubs fair. The college also carries an unusually deep publication set for its size: The Mike, a bi-weekly newspaper founded in 1947, plus Mnvera, Windrose, Foolscap, and Saeculum.

Kelly Library

The John M. Kelly Library at 113 St. Joseph Street holds humanities and social-science collections strongest in Catholic theology, the Middle Ages, Celtic languages, book history, and Irish history, plus Special Collections archives of Marshall McLuhan, Sheila Watson, and G.K. Chesterton. It houses the Writing and Research Help Centre and the Math and Computer Science Success Centres in Room 105.

Downtown Toronto fit

The college reports roughly 35% international students from 168 countries and regions. Compare residence or commute, meal-plan structure, late-evening travel, access to St. George classes, and whether the College's historic campus and community scale fit your priorities.

Clubs, course unions, and student publications

Confirmed

COLLEGE-LEVEL. The clubs page describes more than ten clubs and student groups and names roughly nineteen, including the Book and Media Studies Student Association, the Celtic Studies Course Union, the Thomistic Institute Chapter, Pride SMC, the Troubadours drama group, Maestoso Legato, SAGA, SMC Run Club and Pair-A-Dice gaming. The college also carries an unusually deep student-publication set for its size: The Mike, a bi-weekly student newspaper founded in 1947, the Mnvera literary and arts review, the Windrose yearbook, and the program journals Foolscap and Saeculum.

The college's international-student page separately cites 90-plus student clubs and cultural organizations; that larger number appears to describe the wider U of T offering rather than the college roster. Use the clubs page for the college-level count.

U of T Work Experience, Research, and Career Support

Career and work experience follow the U of T program

St. Michael's does not operate a separate university-wide undergraduate co-op stream. Co-op, ASIP, research, field study, community engagement, professional placements, and career services depend on the student's U of T campus, admission category, program, and eligibility.

Program-level planning

Check the official U of T program calendar and career pages for work-term structure, in-course applications, GPA rules, fees, hiring, international authorization, and placement guarantees.

College-level value

Advising, alumni, events, student leadership, program communities, library collections, and small first-year courses can complement the university's formal career and experiential routes.

COLLEGE-LEVEL. St. Michael's runs no separate undergraduate co-op stream.
