How the Life Sciences category works
At U of T St. George, you don't apply straight into a major like Human Biology or Neuroscience. You apply to the Life Sciences admission category (OUAC code TLG) in the Faculty of Arts & Science.
In first year you aren't enrolled in a specific program, so you can explore. At the end of first year, you apply to programs, such as a major in psychology. You can combine programs outside your admission category, except programs in Rotman Commerce.
U of T lists more than 35 Life Sciences programs, from Animal Physiology and Biochemistry to Pathobiology, Pharmacology and Quantitative Biology.

Course requirements
To be admitted to Life Sciences, you need Grade 12 English and Calculus. From Ontario, that's ENG4U and Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U).
Most life science programs need more. To take the first-year courses for programs like Human Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry or Pharmacology, you also need Grade 12 Biology and Chemistry, and U of T recommends Physics. Psychology needs Biology. U of T's own example: a future psychology student needs English, calculus and Grade 12 biology.
So if you're not sure which program you'll pick, take Biology and Chemistry in Grade 12. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The mid to high 80s range
U of T's Faculty of Arts & Science lists an approximate admission range for Life Sciences of the mid to high 80s. It's a guide, not a cut-off, and U of T doesn't publish a year next to it.
Getting into the category is only the first step. Some programs need specific first-year courses before you can enter them at the end of first year, and those courses need the right Grade 12 subjects.

Your college
Every Arts & Science student on the St. George campus belongs to one of seven colleges: Innis, New, St. Michael's, Trinity, University College, Victoria or Woodsworth. The college is your home base for community and support, whether you live in residence or commute.
All seven offer the same core services, but each has its own traditions. Victoria College, founded in 1836, is the oldest of the seven, and University College is U of T's founding college. See how they fit into Ontario's university picture on our Ontario universities list.

Research and paid work
U of T says Life Sciences students can assist professors with medical and other research as early as second year.
Eligible students can apply to the Arts & Science Internship Program after first year. It offers 12 to 20 months of paid work experience in places like hospitals, research institutes, pharmaceutical companies and health marketing agencies, plus professional development training.
The St. George Life Sciences page lists the internship program rather than co-op. U of T Scarborough runs its own life sciences programs with co-op, and U of T Mississauga offers research placements and its BioPath professional development program.

For parents
Admission to Life Sciences is the first step, not the last. The program your child wants in second year may need specific first-year courses, which in turn need Grade 12 Biology and Chemistry. Check the program table before Grade 12 course selection.
U of T has three campuses, and life sciences programs at Mississauga and Scarborough are separate OUAC choices. Compare them with other schools on our health sciences and pre-med guide.
