Why you can't apply from high school

The Bloomberg BScN is a full-time, accelerated, two-year program. It is built for students who already have university and life experience. U of T lists nursing with its professional programs, the ones students go to after some undergraduate study.

To be eligible you need at least two years of study at a recognized university. That equals 10.0 U of T credits, and at least 4.0 credits must be above the first-year level. Some students apply with a full degree. Others apply after two years.

The high school route into U of T nursing

If you are in Grade 12 now, you apply to a first-year university program. A life science program is a common choice because it lets you take physiology, microbiology and statistics. At U of T, Human Biology on the St. George campus asks Ontario students for ENG4U, SBI4U, MCV4U and SCH4U, with SPH4U recommended. The Scarborough version lists ENG4U, SBI4U, one 4U math, and recommends SCH4U.

You don't have to stay at U of T for those two years. The nursing page accepts study at any recognized university. Pick a first program you would be happy to finish if nursing doesn't work out. Plan your Grade 12 courses with our course planner and check your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

Prerequisite courses

All prerequisites are university courses. Each one needs at least 60% or C minus. Credit or no credit and pass or fail grades usually don't count. You must upload a course outline or calendar description for each one, or your file is incomplete.

You need Human Physiology, Microbiology, Statistics, 1.0 credit of life or physical science, and social science. From the September 2026 intake, the social science rule changed. You now need 1.0 credit in social science, or 0.5 in social science plus 0.5 in humanities. All prerequisites must be done by June 30 of the year you start.

The average you need

The minimum is a B average, about 75% or 3.0 out of 4.0, in your most recent 5.0 credits. Bloomberg says it looks at your whole university record too.

The program calls itself highly competitive. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee an offer. U of T does not publish an admitted average for the BScN, so we won't guess one.

The supplementary application

Every applicant writes a supplementary application on JOIN U of T. It has a 500-word personal statement on why you are a great candidate. It has a 400-word answer on leadership and community work from the past five years. High school activities don't count there. It also has a 400-word plan for balancing a full-time program with your other duties. An optional 400-word section lets you explain obstacles.

The personal statement must be in your own words. Bloomberg says the use of AI is not permitted. The questions shown are for the September 2026 intake, so check for updates.

What the two years look like

The program runs about 20 months with no electives. Classes and labs run Monday to Friday. Clinical shifts can be 8 or 12 hours on days, evenings or nights, any day of the week.

Year one covers older adults and mental health, then acute care, children, and labour and delivery. Year two covers health policy, leadership and ethics. It ends with an 11-week integrative practicum. There is also a cohort based at U of T Mississauga with placements in the western GTA.

No co-op, but a lot of clinical time

Bloomberg's program pages describe clinical placements and a final practicum, not a co-op stream. All courses are required. Dropping one adds time to the program.

Placements happen in hospitals and other health care agencies. You pay for things like police checks, mask fittings, scrubs and a stethoscope. Textbooks are about $600 in year one.

Tuition for 2026-27

The 2026-2027 fee table lists a BScN program fee of $8,350 for domestic students in each year. With incidental and ancillary fees, the total is $10,841.72 in year one and $10,751.44 in year two. International students pay a $53,610 program fee, or $57,049.72 in year one with fees.

The undergraduate financial support page shows older figures: $8,190 tuition and $10,598.88 total for domestic students, and $42,000 and $45,164.88 for international students. Those pages don't agree. The fee table is labelled 2026-2027, but confirm with U of T before you budget.

Awards and money help

Incoming BScN students fill out one admission award form on JOIN U of T. It covers merit awards and need-based awards. To be considered for need, you complete the budget section. OSAP is the main source of aid for full-time students. See our OSAP guide.

U of T's big entrance scholarships, such as the President's Scholars of Excellence Program, are for students entering first year from high school. On the high school route, you would be considered for those when you apply to your first program.

Residence

U of T guarantees residence to new full-time students entering their first year of postsecondary study for the first time. You must apply on the residence portal by March 31 and accept your offer by June 2.

BScN students have already done university, so that wording usually won't cover them. If you take the high school route at U of T, the guarantee can apply to your first year in that program.

For parents

Nursing at U of T is a plan of at least four years: two years in another program, then two years of nursing. Help your child pick a first program they like, with room for the prerequisites.

Your child should also apply to direct-entry nursing programs if nursing is the main goal. Compare options on our Ontario nursing pages. The supplementary answers must be in your child's own words.
