U of T Applicant Portals vs ACORN

Join U of T and the Engineering Applicant Portal manage undergraduate admission work after U of T receives an application. ACORN is the student information system used for course enrolment, fees, finances and records. Engineering applicants use the Engineering Applicant Portal; applicants to other undergraduate program areas generally use Join U of T. The personalized portal, acknowledgement email and offer letter control an individual file.

Which U of T portal owns each task?

U of T describes undergraduate admission as a two-step process: submit the application through OUAC, then complete the next steps in its applicant portal. About a week after U of T receives the OUAC application, it sends instructions for the appropriate portal. The university's current public guidance names Join U of T and the Engineering Applicant Portal as the two undergraduate applicant routes.

ACORN begins a different workflow. U of T describes it as the student interface to the student information system. Students use it to enrol in courses, review fees and finances, update contact information and manage other academic or administrative tasks. It is not the place to substitute for an outstanding undergraduate application checklist.

Use the assigned applicant portal as a live checklist

The acknowledgement email supplies the access instructions. Once the assigned portal is available, review every application separately: U of T can consider choices independently, and documents or supplements can differ by campus, division and program area.

U of T says the portals show personalized next steps, required documents, supplemental forms or profiles, application status, admission decisions and access to other applicant services such as residence and financial aid. This does not mean every applicant receives every item. Submit only what the portal assigns and use the deadline attached to that item.

  • Confirm that every program choice shown matches the intended campus and admission category.
  • Record each required document, supplemental form or profile and its displayed deadline.
  • Check both the portal and the application email account for new requests and decision notices.
  • Open the decision letter and read all conditions and response dates before accepting through OUAC.
  • If invited to a Join U of T waitlist, use the form and deadline shown for that specific application. U of T says the confirmation form appears only for invited applicants.

What is different for Engineering applicants?

Applicants to the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering use the Engineering Applicant Portal. The faculty's current viewbook says the Engineering admissions committee considers academic performance, activities and the personal profile, with that information supplied through the Engineering Applicant Portal. Follow the live portal for the exact profile tasks and format assigned to the application.

Do not copy instructions from Join U of T into an Engineering file or assume that a public description captures the current interface. U of T's central how-to page directs Engineering applicants to their own portal, and deadlines may differ by division or required item.

When ACORN becomes the right system

After accepting an offer, use ACORN for any assigned admission deposit and, as access expands, for course enrolment, fees and student records. Not every offer requires a deposit. U of T's ACORN help site also covers contact information, awards and financial aid. Some divisions use ACORN for program-of-study enrolment or requests after first year; follow your division's timing and eligibility rules.

Keep the distinction during the transition. An applicant may be able to access several U of T services, but the admission decision, required application documents and offer conditions remain tied to the applicant portal and offer letter. ACORN becomes the source for student-account and enrolment tasks when U of T makes those functions available.

Where to ask for help

Use University Admissions and Outreach for a general undergraduate application question, and the faculty or division contact for a program-specific requirement. ACORN's Help & Contact routes direct student questions by topic, including invoices, awards, financial aid and transcripts.

Do not send a password, authentication code or a full private document to an adviser. Describe the portal name, the program area, the checklist label and the exact non-sensitive error text so the official office can route the question.
