Three steps: bachelor's, master's, then licence

Most people who want to become architects in Canada follow three steps. First, you earn a bachelor's degree. Then you finish a professional Master of Architecture, often called an MArch. After that, you gain supervised work experience and pass an exam before you can register.

The national group of regulators, ROAC, says Canadian programs exist at a pre-professional level and a professional level. The professional degree is granted only at the master's level. ROAC says a professional program may take five to seven years in total. So a four-year bachelor's degree is part of the path. It isn't the whole education an architect needs.

Licensing is local. Each province or territory has its own regulator, and only licensed members may provide architectural services. ROAC also describes other routes, including the RAIC Syllabus program, which mixes work and study. Most candidates still use the university route.

What accreditation means for your choice

Accreditation is a check that a professional program meets a national education standard. It's not a ranking. Two accredited schools are not placed first and second by it. The Canadian Architectural Certification Board, or CACB, accredits professional architecture degrees for licensing purposes.

Because the accredited degree is the master's, look at the MArch each school offers. Waterloo, U of T, Carleton, TMU and UBC each describe their MArch as accredited on their own pages. Waterloo says its program received a six-year term in 2024. U of T says its MArch received a six-year term in 2026. Laurentian calls its McEwen School the 12th accredited architecture school in Canada. Dalhousie describes its MArch as accredited.

The undergraduate degree before it is called pre-professional. TMU's page says its Bachelor of Architectural Science is recognized as pre-professional and forms an accredited program when combined with its MArch. McGill says its B.Sc. in Architecture is non-professional and that you must complete the M.Arch. to enter the licence path.

Schools you can enter straight from Grade 12

Several schools admit you to a first-year architecture degree from high school. In Ontario, you apply through OUAC and then complete a school task. The Waterloo architecture requirements guide covers that school's two-stage model. Grades decide who moves on. The second stage adds a portfolio and an interview.

Carleton asks for one portfolio package even if you apply to more than one major. Its majors are Conservation and Sustainability, Design, and Urbanism. The Carleton architecture guide has the full package rules. McGill admits architecture students through the Faculty of Engineering application. Its requirements guide explains the math and physics courses it expects.

Laurentian's McEwen School in Sudbury is a limited-enrolment program. It says selection isn't based on grades alone. U of T's Daniels Faculty, TMU and UBC also admit students from Grade 12, each with its own creative task. See the Laurentian, U of T and TMU guides for each school's details.

UBC's Bachelor of Design replaced its older environmental design degree as of Fall 2020. It's now a direct-entry, four-year degree. It combines architecture, landscape architecture and urban design courses.

Schools that admit you after university study

Two of these schools don't take Grade 12 students straight into the architecture degree. Dalhousie's Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies starts at the third-year level. You first complete two years of university in other subjects, with at least a B- average, or 2.5 GPA. Those years must include two math or science courses, a writing course and two humanities or social science courses. You also send a design portfolio.

Dalhousie lists March 1, 2027 as the deadline for September 2027 entry to this degree. That date is for students who already have the university courses. If you finish high school in 2027, you'd usually apply in a later year. The Dalhousie architecture guide explains the course list.

Manitoba's Bachelor of Environmental Design is an advanced-entry degree. If you haven't been to university, you can start in a direct-entry program such as University 1. You need a qualifying year of 30 credit hours and a minimum adjusted GPA of 2.50. The program says meeting the minimum doesn't assure a place. The current bulletin covers 2026-27 and lists an April 1, 2026 deadline. A bulletin for a later intake isn't published yet. The Manitoba environmental design guide has more detail.

Portfolio, creative task or neither

Don't assume every school wants the same portfolio. Carleton asks for four to eight pieces in SlideRoom. It also wants a preferred major statement of up to 150 words and a 250 to 300 word essay about your work. TMU asks for 12 to 14 works, a set home exercise and a writing sample, with a $50 assessment fee.

U of T is different. It asks you to make one object from household materials. You send three photographs and a summary of up to 200 words. U of T says no portfolio is required or accepted. Its reason is that you don't need prior art or design training to succeed.

Waterloo invites stage-two applicants to upload a portfolio, answer a short survey and book an interview. It suggests about 10 pieces and no more than 20. It strongly encourages three-dimensional work. Laurentian wants a portfolio and a statement of interest of 500 to 1,000 words. UBC's supplemental application has a resume, a creative test and a video interview.

The work must be yours. Carleton and U of T both say generative AI can't produce your submitted work. Waterloo says work that isn't your own ends the application. Keep your sketches and process notes so you can explain how each piece developed. The supplementary applications hub covers other school tasks.

Grades and Grade 12 courses

Grade expectations differ, and the published numbers measure different things. TMU sets a 70% minimum but shows a 90%+ grade range from previous years. U of T asks for an average in the high 80s and above, with ENG4U. Laurentian's minimum is 75% in your best six Grade 12 U or M courses. McGill lists typical minimum ranges in the low to high 90s, and says these ranges don't guarantee admission.

Waterloo's two pages don't match. The program page says an admission average from the mid-80s and a 78% minimum in ENG4U. The School of Architecture page says low to mid 80s and English of at least 75%, usually 80%, to reach stage two. Both pages want math and physics in the low 70s or higher. Plan for the higher English figure until Waterloo confirms which applies.

Course lists matter too. McGill names 4U English or French, Calculus and Vectors, and 4U Physics. TMU names English, Physics and either Calculus and Vectors or Advanced Functions. Laurentian may admit a student with only one Grade 12 math, but that student must take a first-year math course.

How your bachelor's degree affects MArch length

The bachelor's degree you choose can change how long your master's takes. McGill's professional M.Arch. is a 1.5-year program after its B.Sc. in Architecture. Laurentian says its students need a 5.5 GPA to be considered for its own M.Arch.

UBC's MArch accepts a four-year degree in any discipline with a B+ in upper-year courses. Its standard track is three years. Some degrees earn advanced placement and a two-year track. UBC's list includes its own Bachelor of Design and Dalhousie's environmental design degree. It also names specific Carleton, TMU and Manitoba degrees. A degree called Bachelor of Architectural Studies appears on UBC's three-year list. Some names on that list are older or unusual. Ask UBC how it treats your exact degree before you count on two years.

U of T's undergraduate degree offers three specialist streams after the first two years: design, history and theory, or technology. A more flexible stream suits students adding another major or minor. If you plan a master's elsewhere, ask that school which stream it expects.

Co-op, work terms and the internship

Paid work during your degree is not the same as the internship you complete after the MArch. Waterloo's architecture degree is co-op only. Students alternate school and paid work terms from second year, and spend a fall term in Rome. Laurentian builds in 28 weeks of co-op across two placements. Dalhousie's degree includes one 12-week work term of 500 hours. TMU offers a five-year co-op format as well as a four-year format.

After the professional degree, ROAC's Internship in Architecture Program is how interns record supervised experience. Each province or territory runs its own application. Then you write the Examination for Architects in Canada, a national exam. A co-op placement during a bachelor's degree doesn't replace either step.

Landscape architecture is a separate route

Landscape architects and architects are different professions. Guelph's Bachelor of Landscape Architecture says it's the only BLA in Canada accredited by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects. It doesn't lead to an architect's licence. Read the Guelph landscape architecture guide if outdoor and urban spaces interest you more than buildings.

UBC keeps both fields close. Its undergraduate degree mixes architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism. At the graduate level, it describes its Master of Landscape Architecture as a separate accredited professional program.

Build your Fall 2027 calendar

Put each school's OUAC or main application date beside its creative deadline. U of T and TMU tasks are due by February 1, 2027, and TMU allows 10 business days after you apply if that's later. Laurentian's portfolio is due February 7, 2027. Carleton's package is due March 5, 2027. McGill's deadline for Canadian high school students outside Quebec is February 1, 2027.

Some dates aren't yet published for Fall 2027. Waterloo's March portfolio window and April interviews name no year, and part of that page still refers to September 2026. UBC lists January 15 without a year. One UBC page says decisions arrive in mid to late March, while the program page says mid to late April. Guelph's February 1 landscape date sits on a page headed 2026-27. Confirm these with each school.

Start your portfolio in the fall of Grade 12. Then you'll have time to choose your best recent work and redo weak photos. Our Ontario university deadlines guide and Canadian deadlines guide list the general application dates.

The CACB publishes the official list of accredited programs. Each school's row cites its own accreditation statement. Check the CACB list and each school's next review date before you rely on an accreditation claim.
