U of T Gyms and Recreation Centres

St. George students do not have to choose one permanent gym. The Athletic Centre and Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport are operated by U of T's Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education, while the Hart House Fitness Centre has its own membership system. Students paying the relevant incidental fees receive access, but the facility mix and summer rules differ. Pick the building that suits the activity, then check its live schedule before travelling.

Which recreation centre fits your plan?

Choose the Athletic Centre for the broadest indoor mix: pools, courts, a 200-metre indoor track, field house, strength and conditioning, squash and activity rooms. Choose Goldring when strength and conditioning or court space is the priority. Choose Hart House when you want its smaller fitness-centre setting, 25-yard pool, indoor track, weight room and drop-in classes, or when you also use Hart House's wider student and community spaces.

The centres share some categories, especially strength training and court activities. The practical difference is the exact room and its availability. Open gym, lane swim, fitness classes, team training, academic use and special events can change which space is available at a given time.

Athletic Centre: the widest indoor facility mix

The Athletic Centre is at 55 Harbord Street on the west side of St. George campus, near Spadina Avenue. U of T identifies the Warren Stevens and Clara Benson buildings as parts of the centre. Its facilities include seven gymnasiums, three indoor pools, a strength and conditioning centre, the Bruce Kidd Field House, an indoor track, a dance studio, cardio machines, tennis and squash courts.

The pool labels need care. The official page lists a 50-metre Varsity Pool with an adjacent teaching pool and a separate six-lane, 25-yard Benson Pool. The Bruce Kidd Field House on the third floor contains the 200-metre track, four multipurpose courts, and strength and cardio equipment. Use the live pool, court and open-gym schedules because academic, varsity and registered uses share the complex.

Goldring Centre: strength training and a competition field house

The full official name is the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. It is at 100 Devonshire Place. U of T lists a 2,000-seat competition venue for basketball and volleyball, a large strength and conditioning centre, a fitness studio, a sport-medicine clinic and sports-science research laboratories.

The strength and conditioning centre has equipment across four tiers. Tiers 1 and 4 have accessible access; that is an accessibility detail, not a rule limiting general members to those two tiers. Tier 4 is frequently reserved for authorized group training, and the Speed and Power Centre follows its own schedule. Scan a TCard or Sport & Rec membership card at the turnstile and check the space's availability before your workout.

Hart House Fitness Centre: a separate membership check

Hart House Fitness Centre membership includes a 25-yard pool, indoor track, weight room and drop-in classes. Some services, including personal training, reformer Pilates and specialized registered programs, are membership enhancements rather than a promise that every activity is included.

U of T students enrolled in an academic term and paying Hart House incidental fees have full access to the facilities and drop-in programs. A student who is not in an incidental-fee-paying term needs a membership; Hart House gives summer as the example and offers a Student Summer Membership. Check ACORN or ask your registrar if you are unsure whether the Hart House fee appears on your account.

Understand the two student-access rules

Full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students who paid KPE athletic incidental fees for the current term automatically receive membership to the Athletic Centre, Goldring Centre and Varsity Centre. The fee assessment controls eligibility. For summer access, check whether that term includes the fee or whether you need to buy a student membership.

Hart House applies its own incidental-fee test. Paying KPE fees does not by itself prove Hart House eligibility, and paying Hart House fees does not replace activity-specific booking or registration. Community, alumni, staff and other membership categories exist at both systems; compare their current membership prices on the official pages.

  • For Athletic Centre or Goldring access, check the KPE athletic incidental fee and bring your TCard.
  • For Hart House, check the Hart House incidental fee in ACORN.
  • For summer use, verify whether you are paying the relevant fee in that term or need a student membership.
  • For a registered class, court or specialized area, check the separate booking and eligibility rule.

Plan a first visit without relying on a stale timetable

KPE offers free personalized Athletic Centre tours through its customer-experience staff. The Athletic Centre, Goldring and Hart House pages publish current building or program information, but scheduled uses can restrict particular rooms. Check the same-day facility page and activity schedule, then allow time to find the entrance and scan in.

If accessibility affects your choice, KPE publishes an accommodation-request route and lists accessible entrances and elevators. Contact the facility about the specific activity and room you plan to use.
