Pick the visit that answers your biggest question

A large open house works well when you want to compare several subjects at one university. Faculty talks and student projects can show what a course page leaves out. A regular tour gives you another way to see the campus when the main event clashes with work or school. Read what the booking includes before you commit to travel.

Start with the program's location. U of T has separate tours for St. George, Mississauga and Scarborough. York's autumn events distinguish Keele, Glendon and Markham. UBC asks you to choose Vancouver or Okanagan. Visiting one campus doesn't tell you what the other one feels like, or whether your chosen degree runs there.

Choose a question you can't settle from a web page. You might need to see the route between a likely classroom and accessible housing. You might want to ask about a common first year before choosing an Engineering discipline. Our university directory links each school's program and housing owners so you can arrive with a short list.

Use autumn 2026 dates for a Fall 2027 application

The event year and entry year are different. McMaster's October 24 and November 14 Fall Preview days take place in 2026. Waterloo's November 14 open house also takes place in 2026. They're useful while you're preparing an application for September 2027. Don't search only for a 2027 autumn event and miss the earlier chance to compare choices.

Queen's runs Fall Preview on November 7 and 8. Western's calendar confirms Sunday, November 8, 2026. Those dates overlap, so you may need to choose a Queen's day or book a regular visit elsewhere. Check travel time yourself before trying to fit campuses into a weekend. Two events may not fit into one weekend.

An event booking is separate from an admission application. Put your visit beside the tasks in the Grade 12 application timeline. Then check the Ontario university deadlines for the application itself. Missing an open house doesn't remove the need to meet the university's course, form and document rules.

Treat March Break as a separate booking task

Guelph already names Sunday, March 14, 2027 for its March Open House. Its page says more details will follow. You can record the day now while leaving the program and registration steps open. A confirmed date doesn't mean every faculty talk, residence visit or accessibility arrangement is ready to book.

For the other Ontario schools listed here, the sources don't confirm a March Break 2027 open-house date. Keep those entries pending. A navigation label saying March Break Tours is evidence of a visit format, not a year-specific schedule. Equally, a past March event is not proof that next year's event uses the same weekday.

If March is your best chance to travel, use the current tour booking route and ask when that period becomes available. Don't buy a non-refundable ticket based on an old event page. A March visit can still help with an offer decision, but it may come after your application or supplementary deadline. Keep those academic dates in their own calendar.

Use virtual tours to narrow an expensive trip

UBC offers both live virtual tours and self-guided virtual visits. Its live sessions list 75 minutes for Okanagan and 90 minutes for Vancouver, with a question panel. The formats help you compare the campuses before paying for a long trip. Check the live booking time zone so you join the session you intended.

U of T's tours page also links virtual tours and online information sessions. It separates general St. George tours from faculty and college or residence visits. If you're comparing colleges, a broad walk around downtown won't answer every housing question. Use the specific follow-up link for the part of campus where you may study or live.

Dalhousie's official page lists a virtual Open House on December 5, 2026. It also distinguishes Halifax from the Agricultural Campus in Truro. A virtual session can let a parent attend from home while you ask program questions. Keep notes about the actual campus and degree; a general university presentation may cover several different routes.

Know what the Ontario Universities' Fair can answer

The official OUF page says the 2026 fair ran September 26 and 27, so that event is over. The site asks visitors to check back for next year's event. The 2027 dates remain pending. Don't reuse the September 2026 dates as if they were a future appointment.

A fair lets you gather answers from university representatives in one setting. A campus tour helps you examine a specific place. Use the fair to identify which institutions deserve a longer look, then use their own booking pages to visit. Going to a fair doesn't show you the residence, teaching rooms or route to your intended faculty.

Bring the same core question to each representative so your notes compare like with like. Ask which campus and entry route offers your subject. Ask where the current prerequisite rules live. Take the official link home rather than relying on a quick conversation for a deadline. The university's written requirements still control your application.

Questions you can ask as a student

Ask a current student what changed between their expectation and first year. Then make the question specific: what does a normal class week look like in this program, and where do you go between classes? Their experience can give you a useful example. It doesn't establish a published rule or a promise about your own timetable.

For a course question, find the faculty session rather than expecting a general guide to know every exception. Ask whether you enter the subject from high school or compete for it later. Ask which parts of a co-op search you handle yourself. Follow those conversations with the school's written program page before deciding that an opportunity is guaranteed.

For housing, ask which buildings you'll actually see and whether they represent the room types you can apply for. A display room isn't a reservation. Our Ontario residence comparison explains guarantees and application steps. Bring an unanswered housing question from that guide, then record the official office that can settle it.

Questions a parent can ask without taking over

Let your child lead the subject discussion, then ask about a practical cost or support gap. Which fee schedule covers the entry year? What must be paid before student aid arrives? A staff member can point you to the right owner. Don't turn a verbal estimate into a fixed family budget without its year and included charges. The Waterloo financial-aid guide explains its funding separately.

Ask how to contact support before arrival, especially for access needs that affect the visit itself. McMaster's Fall Preview page includes accessibility information. Use the event's own contact route for arrangements and describe the access you need. You don't need to tell a student ambassador private medical details to ask for an accessible tour route.

Afterwards, compare what you each noticed. You may focus on travel and costs while your child focuses on a course or club. Write down the unresolved points separately. Use the parent application guide for the wider planning role and the school hub for written follow-up. A campus visit informs the choice; it doesn't decide it for you.

Confirm the organiser's instructions before leaving

Book through the official page and save the confirmation. Confirm the meeting place, campus and event agenda shortly before travel. Waterloo Architecture is in Cambridge and requires separate session registration; Stratford activities also have their own location. Western tells tour guests to follow the parking instructions in their confirmation. A map pin for the university as a whole may send you to the wrong entrance.

McGill's Open House FAQ names Saturday, October 24, 2026. It gives separate schedules: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Downtown and 12:30 to 5 p.m. at the Macdonald campus. An older Important Dates calendar listing still shows October 18 and tells visitors to check the Open House website in August 2026. Use the FAQ and its registration instructions before making a travel commitment.

Keep a small follow-up list after the visit. Link each question to the program, residence or financial-aid office that owns it. For example, the Waterloo hub and Western hub connect those topics. Return to the written offer and deadlines when you make your final choice. A good visit leaves you with better questions and the right place to resolve them.
