One code, two degrees

UTM's Commerce and Management programs both sit in the Department of Management. You apply to one admission category, Commerce and Management, with OUAC code TMO. UTM notes that some printed materials still show the old code, TMG.

The Commerce Specialist leads to a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom). The Management Specialist leads to a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). The Major in either subject leads to an Honours Bachelor of Arts (HBA). UTM says Commerce combines economics with management, which it calls useful for business and government decisions.

Course requirements

Every applicant needs an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with six Grade 12 U or M courses, including English. For Commerce, UTM lists English, Calculus and Vectors, and Advanced Functions. For Management, UTM lists English and Advanced Functions, and recommends Calculus. U of T's central Management page shows the same Calculus recommendation.

The difference matters. Commerce and Management both require first-year university calculus before you can enter the program. If you want the BCom, take MCV4U in Grade 12. Our course planner can help you fit it in.

The average you need

UTM lists a competitive average of mid 80s for the Commerce and Management category. That is a range, not a guarantee. UTM does not publish an admitted average or an acceptance rate for Commerce or Management.

Your Grade 12 average gets you into first-year studies. It does not lock in the BCom or BBA. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

The first-year checkpoint

If you are admitted to first-year Commerce, you can enter a Commerce program after first year. You need at least 4.0 credits, with 63% or more in ECO101 and ECO102, MGM101 and MGT120. You also need first-year calculus, such as MAT135 and MAT136.

Management works the same way, with MGM102 in place of MGT120. For both, UTM ranks you on a weighted average of those course grades. The calendar says the cut-off is set each year by the Department of Management and depends on space and the applicant pool. So 63% in each course is the minimum, not the cut-off.

You must be in good standing, and you apply during the Subject POSt request periods. This is the real admission hurdle for the BCom and BBA. Plan your first-year course load with that in mind.

Supplementary requirements

There is no supplementary application to get into UTM Commerce or Management from high school. U of T's list of supplemental applications at the Mississauga campus names only Computer Science and Theatre and Drama Studies. The co-op stream has its own supplemental application, but you apply for it after first year.

Programs inside the category

UTM offers five Commerce programs: the Accounting Specialist, the Finance Specialist, the Marketing Specialist, the Commerce Specialist and the Commerce Major. Commerce Specialist students can add a Focus in Business Data Analytics, which uses economics, statistics and management to solve business problems with data. The calendar says the Commerce Major can lead to an Honours BA or an Honours BSc, depending on your second subject.

On the Management side, the calendar lists the Management Specialist (BBA), Accounting and Finance (BBA), Human Resource Management (BBA) and the Management Major. UTM's Management page also lists Digital Enterprise Management, a specialist on using digital technologies to solve business problems, as another program to consider.

Courses and skills beyond class

Sample Commerce courses on UTM's page include Operations Management, Principles of Marketing and Management Accounting I. Sample Management courses include Data Analytics for Management, Managing Global Organizations and an Internship course, where students apply what they have learned in a business setting.

Commerce and Management students can also join the Professional Skills Development Program, or PSDP. It builds workplace skills such as relationship-building and self-reflection. Students who earn at least 46 skill points can apply for a transcript notation. The calendar notes Commerce is a deregulated fee program, so its tuition is higher than regulated programs.

Co-op

UTM's co-op is called the UTM Co-op Internship Program, or UTMCIP. It is open to the Accounting, Commerce, Finance and Marketing Specialists, the Commerce Major, and the Management Specialist and Major. You cannot apply from high school. You apply after first year, with at least 4.0 and no more than 6.0 credits, and enter the stream in second year.

UTMCIP has limited spots and needs a supplemental application. It includes mandatory work-readiness programming and a 12- or 16-month paid, full-time work term. The degree normally takes 5 years, and there is an extra cost. Eligibility rules, including CGPA, may differ from the regular program.

Tuition for 2026-27

In Schedule 2 of U of T's 2026-27 fee report, first-year Commerce and Management students pay the general Arts and Science fee. For Ontario students that is $6,220. Once you are in the program, the 2026-27 Ontario fee is $16,210 for Commerce/Business Administration and $12,970 for the Management UTM row.

UTM's own fee page still shows 2025-26: $15,900 for upper years in Commerce and the Management Specialist, and $12,720 for the Management Major. Those are prior-cycle amounts, not the 2026-27 Schedule 2 fees. Fees for the upper years of students who start in 2027 will be set later.

Scholarships

U of T has about 900 University of Toronto Scholars awards, each worth $10,000. Outstanding secondary school students are considered automatically, based on their average at the time of admission. The award is for first year only and does not renew. See our U of T financial aid guide for bursaries and other awards.

For parents

An offer to UTM Commerce and Management is an offer to first-year studies, not a guaranteed seat in the BCom or BBA. Your child's first-year marks in economics, management and calculus decide the next step. The cut-off changes each year.

Budget for a big jump in tuition after first year. In 2026-27, the upper-year Ontario fee for Commerce is more than double the first-year fee. For a St. George comparison, read our Rotman Commerce page.
