How a top-6 average works in Ontario
Most Ontario universities build your admission average from six Grade 12 courses.
Which courses count
Universities use Grade 12 U and M courses, usually your best six. Courses your program requires always count, even when another mark is higher. Waterloo, for example, uses your top six Grade 12 courses including the program's required courses, so your average can differ between two programs. Open, college and workplace courses don't count here. If you retake a course, it counts once, at the higher mark.
Why the calculator doesn't round up
McMaster and Western say they don't round admission averages, so 89.83% isn't 90%. The calculator keeps your exact average and shows two decimals without rounding up. A band that starts at 90% needs a real 90.00%.
Entrance scholarships by average
Many universities pay an automatic entrance scholarship when your average reaches a published band. York starts at 80% and TMU at 86%. Waterloo, Carleton, uOttawa and Laurier start at 85%, and Western and Guelph at 90%. McMaster sets a threshold for each faculty. Queen's, UBC, McGill and the University of Alberta rank applicants instead of using a fixed band.
The calculator shows the band your average reaches at 15 universities, with the date we checked each official page. Awards that need an application are listed on each university's page. Some close as early as October, so read how to apply for scholarships in Canada now.
Published ranges, not your chances
Program ranges come from each university's own pages: Waterloo's program pages, Queen's competitive averages, Western's and Guelph's Ontario requirements and U of T's admissions bulletin. They describe students admitted in a past cycle. They aren't cut-offs, and many programs also read supplementary applications. So the calculator never turns a range into a chance of admission.

Top-6 average questions
What Grade 12 students ask about averages and entrance scholarships.
Add your six best Grade 12 U and M marks and divide by six. Include every course your program requires, even if it isn't one of your highest. The calculator does this for you and shows which courses counted.
Yes. Universities count the program's required courses first, then fill the other places with your best Grade 12 U and M courses. Tick Required next to those courses, or pick a program and we'll tick the ones we have on file.
Don't count on it. McMaster and Western say they don't round admission averages, so 89.83% doesn't reach a 90% band. The calculator shows your exact average to two decimals.
It depends on the university. Automatic awards start at 80% at York, 85% at Waterloo and Carleton, 86% at TMU and 90% at Western and Guelph. McMaster sets a threshold for each faculty. The calculator links each university's current table.
No. It shows published ranges and the cycle they describe, and universities decide admission. Many programs also weigh supplementary forms, interviews or portfolios. Use the ranges to plan, then read each program's requirements.
