Course requirements

Ontario students need six Grade 12 U, M or D courses, and one must be English (ENG4U). Daniels does not list math or physics as required for Architectural Studies. That makes it more open than most Canadian architecture programs.

The out of school part of a Grade 12 co-op course is not counted for admission. If you also want to keep Waterloo, Carleton, TMU or McGill open, plan math and physics too, using our course planner.

The average you need

Daniels asks for an average in the high 80s and above across your six Grade 12 courses. It does not publish a firm cut off or an acceptance rate for Architectural Studies.

Your supplementary object is also part of the file, so grades are not the only factor. Check where you stand with our Top 6 average calculator.

The One Idea supplementary application

Every applicant must send a supplementary application. If you miss it, you are refused automatically. For Architectural Studies, you make an object from household materials. It can be or do anything, and you should be able to carry it in your arms.

You document it with exactly three photos. At least one must show the final object. The others can show how you built it or a detail. Then you write up to 200 words on the object and your key choices: its meaning or use, the materials and how you put it together.

No portfolio is required or accepted. Daniels says students do not need to already have skill in art or design to become good architects, landscape architects or urbanists. It wants to see creativity, a willingness to experiment with materials and a clear explanation of what you did and why.

Rules on AI and your own work

Daniels does not allow generative AI to produce images or text in the application. Using it leads to automatic refusal. U of T says applicants found to have used AI to create content presented as their own will be disqualified, and this counts as an academic offence.

You get only one chance to submit. Once you submit, the application is final, so check your photos and text first.

Dates for Fall 2027

Ontario high school students apply on OUAC by January 15, 2027, using code TLA. The supplementary application opens in mid October and is due February 1, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. You get access through your JOINid, which U of T emails about a week after it receives your application.

Out of province and international students have early dates of November 7, 2026 for OUAC and December 1, 2026 for the supplementary. Daniels says early dates do not affect Ontario students, who are all treated equally. See our Ontario deadlines page.

First year and the streams

First year has two lecture courses on the history of architecture, landscape and urban design, an introductory studio, a Visual Strategies workshop and a lecture on contemporary art. All students start in the Comprehensive stream.

After 8.0 credits with a CGPA of at least 2.7, you can apply to the Design, History and Theory, or Technology stream. Each needs 75% in two named second year courses, and U of T says meeting the rules does not guarantee entry. These details come from the 2025-26 calendar, so check the newest version.

Capstones and certificates

In fourth year, students can take a capstone such as the Multidisciplinary Urban Capstone or the Design and Community Engagement Capstone, or a stream seminar. The Comprehensive specialist needs 10.0 program credits, and the Design, History and Theory, and Technology streams need 13.0.

You can also add a Certificate in Global Studies of the Built Environment or a Certificate in Sustainability of the Built Environment. Each is 2.0 credits.

Co-op and internships

Architectural Studies has no co-op stream. Instead, upper year students can join the Design Research Internship Program with Toronto design firms. There is also an internship course, ARC495Y1, for students who have finished third year and have Program Director approval.

Daniels also offers design build courses and summer studios abroad, with past locations such as Athens, Berlin and Ghana.

Path to becoming an architect

The HBA in Architectural Studies is not a professional architecture degree. Students who want a licence go on to a professional master's degree, such as the Master of Architecture that Daniels offers at the graduate level.

The calendar does not describe a direct path into a professional M.Arch, so you apply to master's programs separately.

Scholarships

U of T gives about 900 Scholars Program awards of $10,000 each in first year. Students coming from high school are considered automatically, based on their average at admission. Students who have already attended a college or university are not eligible.

The award is for first year only. Daniels does not list its own entrance award values on the admissions pages we checked, so ask the faculty about in course awards after you enrol.

For parents

U of T architecture is open to students without math or physics, and no portfolio is needed. That makes it a good option for creative students in the arts. The average target is still the high 80s.

Your child must make the object and write the text alone. Using AI leads to refusal. Also see the U of T admissions overview.
