Choose the degree before you plan the audition
Most Canadian music schools offer two kinds of first degree. A Bachelor of Music, called a BMus or MusBac, centres on performance, composition or education. It almost always needs an audition. A Bachelor of Arts in music is usually broader, and at several schools it has no audition at all. Confirm which degree you're applying to before you choose repertoire.
The details change from campus to campus. UBC's BA in music has no audition, and you declare it once you reach second-year standing. Queen's admits to its BA in music on high school grades alone, while each BMus stream needs a live or recorded audition. uOttawa's Honours BA needs no audition, but its BMus does. Western asks BA Music applicants for an interview and a questionnaire. Popular Music Studies and Music Administrative Studies add a video.
York and Concordia set up the choice another way. York's BA and BFA in music share one OUAC code, YH, and both use a supplementary evaluation. Every Concordia BFA music stream starts with a basic literacy test. Each then asks for a video audition, a creative portfolio or both, depending on the stream. The full rules for each school sit in our program guides, such as U of T Music, McGill Music and York Music.

Music deadlines usually arrive before the university deadline
The music step runs on its own clock. At U of T, the Music Questionnaire closes January 15, 2027, and jazz pre-screening videos are due that day too. Recorded auditions and composition portfolios follow on January 31. Live auditions run February 1 to March 3, 2027. U of T recommends sending your OUAC application by December 1, 2026. You need the applicant ID it triggers before you can open the questionnaire.
UBC's BMus supplement and its fee are due January 15, 2027. That's also the last day to apply to UBC itself. Two reference letters follow on January 20. A video audition, for applicants who can't travel, is due January 27. York's supplementary evaluation is due February 5, 2027. York calls that date guaranteed consideration and keeps reviewing later files until the program fills.
Queen's runs later. Its general application deadline for music is March 1, 2027. Queen's will still consider online auditions for early acceptance if every item arrives by January 31, 2027. Western asks you to register for an audition and interview by February 1, 2027. Laurier's OUAC deadline for Ontario high school students is January 15, 2027, and its audition portal opens on December 15.
Keep one calendar for music dates and a separate one for application dates. The Ontario deadlines guide covers the general OUAC dates. School pages such as UBC deadlines, Queen's deadlines and York deadlines show how the music date fits the whole file.

In person or recorded: each school draws its own line
Recording rules don't line up across schools. U of T requires an in-person audition if you live within 300 km of Toronto. The one exception is an application only to classical Music Technology and Digital Media, which must be recorded. Farther away, you may record and do the interview online. U of T will consider a recording for a student living away from home or with an accessibility need, if you ask before you submit the questionnaire.
Western's line is 250 km from London. Inside it, you're expected on campus for the BMus, though special permission is possible. Laurier holds auditions and interviews on its Waterloo campus from January to April. It offers a virtual option if you live more than 400 km away or have extenuating circumstances. UBC expects domestic BMus applicants to audition in person. Video is for applicants who can't travel or have extenuating circumstances.
Some schools don't rank live above recorded. Queen's says plainly that it gives no preference to live auditions. McGill schedules only one audition day per instrument, so you may be asked to record if that day doesn't work. Concordia's BFA uses uploaded video auditions, with a 15-minute limit for the whole recording. uOttawa lists in-person auditions from February 15 to 20, 2027 and accepts video applications until February 22.
A recording still has strict rules. McGill wants recordings under six months old, and classical guitarists must record their program in one take. uOttawa wants the whole audition in one video, with each piece in one take. Read the list for your own instrument at every school, because repertoire rules change from one school to the next.

Theory, ear-training and sight-reading checks
Schools test theory at different points. U of T has no theory testing on audition day. Instead, applicants recommended for admission write its Entrance Theory Exam on April 9, 2027 and need at least 60%. The classical version covers material similar to RCM Level 8 Theory. U of T no longer accepts theory credentials from other institutions in place of the exam.
York checks musicianship inside the audition itself. Its 15 to 20 minute session can include naming intervals, scales and chord types, singing pitches and some sight reading. Concordia asks every BFA music applicant to upload a basic music literacy test. Harmony and ear-training exemption tests are optional in most streams. Jazz Studies applicants take jazz harmony and jazz ear-training tests instead.
Other schools wait until after admission. uOttawa says there's no theory placement test for BMus admission and that it evaluates theory at the start of the fall term. McGill's placement exams sort new students into theory, ear-training and keyboard courses. The score isn't on your transcript and doesn't touch your CGPA. Western doesn't require a theory assessment, but it expects basic rudiments and entry-level reading when you start.
UBC is where official pages disagree. Its academic calendar says applicants choose dates for a live audition and a theory entrance examination. The School of Music admissions page lists 2027 audition days and doesn't mention a theory exam. Ask UBC Music which rule applies to you before your audition weekend.

How your average and your audition work together
A strong audition doesn't cancel the academic floor, and a high average doesn't replace the audition. U of T says the audition, interview and portfolios are key elements of its decisions, and the academic record is also critical. Its cut-off for music typically varies between 78% and 82%. The mean for admitted students ranges from 83% to 88%. Both ranges move with the year.
McGill sets its floor by program type. Ontario applicants need a Grade 11 and 12 average of 75% for performance programs and 80% for music research programs. McGill also weighs the places open in each program or for each instrument. Its audition decisions can't be appealed. A full studio can limit offers even when your playing is strong.
Western's guideline is the low 80s for the BMus and the mid 80s for Music Administrative Studies, for Ontario high school students. Laurier lists a mid-70s range for its BMus, with English at 60%. York says averages in the low-to-mid 70s or higher may be considered. You then need a 70% final average to keep a York offer. Concordia calls its published cut-offs indicators, not promises.
Treat each figure as a planning target for its own school. If your average sits near a floor, widen your list rather than counting on the audition alone. Work out your number with the Top 6 average calculator, then compare it with each program's rule.

Composition and production streams rely on portfolios
If you write or produce music, your portfolio does much of the work. U of T's direct-entry Composition and Music Technology and Digital Media portfolios are due January 31, 2027. McGill asks Composition applicants for scores of two or three original works and a one-page statement or three-minute video. They also audition on a main instrument, live or recorded. McGill's Music Studies major uses a video portfolio instead of an on-campus audition.
Queen's Digital Music and Sonic Arts stream asks for recorded or notated work with a short note on each piece, plus an artist statement. Concordia's Composition and Production specialization needs a creative portfolio. An audition there is optional unless you want private lessons. Its Electroacoustic Studies major asks for a sound vocabulary test and an electroacoustics portfolio. UBC's composition portfolio is due in early January 2027, but the exact day isn't set yet.

Budget for fees, accompanists and travel
Music applications cost more than the general application. U of T and Laurier each charge a $75 non-refundable audition fee. uOttawa charges $65. UBC collects a separate BMus supplemental fee through its Applicant Service Centre by January 15, 2027.
Accompanist rules differ as well. Laurier offers its professional piano accompanist at no extra fee. uOttawa doesn't provide accompanists, so you arrange your own. At McGill, voice applicants pay their own rehearsal costs with an assigned accompanist. U of T jazz applicants invited to audition must play with a live rhythm section at their own cost. Add travel if a school expects you on campus.

Fall 2027 dates not posted yet or in conflict
Some Fall 2027 details aren't published yet. McGill's audition table lists every instrument for Fall 2027 without a date. Its deadlines page shows January 15 with no year, under an opening line that still names Fall 2026. Plan around January 15 as the latest published rule and check again in November 2026.
uOttawa's audition page gives in-person dates of February 15 to 20, 2027. The same page says 2027 dates are still to come, and its instrument table is empty. Its January 19 deadline for in-person applications has no year. Western's pages give the February 1 registration date but no audition days. Laurier's December 15 portal date and Concordia's March 1 package date also name no year.
Each Ontario date comes from the university's own pages. Check every school again early in January 2027, before you book travel or pay a fee.

Plan your Grade 12 audition season
Start with four to six programs that fit your instrument and goals. Write down each school's degree, format, theory rule and music deadline in one place. Repertoire lists differ a lot. U of T sets RCM-level minimums for the instruments it lists, while Laurier welcomes contemporary and commercial styles for many instruments. Choose pieces that can meet the strictest list you face.
Ask your music teacher about references early. U of T wants two referees, with letters due January 31. UBC wants two letters by January 20, 2027. Send each university application well before its music step, because most music portals open only after the school has your file. The Western, Laurier, UBC, Queen's, uOttawa and Concordia guides list each school's full checklist.
