OSAP for single parents and separated families in 2027

For Fall 2027 planning, OSAP treats a student raising a child differently from a student whose parents have separated. The published 2026-27 sole-support parent rule requires your dependent child to live with you at least 50% of your study period. Your parents' separation alone doesn't put you in that category.

Use the correct aid year before estimating money

The checked full-time application is for 2026-27. It covers programs starting between August 1, 2026 and July 31, 2027. Fall 2027 starts in the next aid year. Use the 2026-27 rules to prepare your questions, then check the new application when it's available. Your 2027-28 grant amount and final eligibility will come from that application.

Use OSAP's Aid Estimator or your own assessment to see your amount. Ontario doesn't publish a table that works out an award for each family situation. The limits below are maximums from official text and lists, not a rate table. Ontario also changed its provincial loan and grant mix for programs starting on or after August 1, 2026. An older estimate can describe a different package. The main OSAP guide covers the wider process.

Read the last published dependants-grant limits

For 2026-27, Canada publishes a maximum of $280 per month of study and $2,240 per year for each eligible dependant. Ontario's 2026-27 federal-grant list repeats the $280 monthly limit. These are limits for a student who has eligible dependants. Having single or separated parents doesn't itself give you an eligible dependant.

You must have financial need and study full-time in a qualified program at a designated school. Your family income must meet the published conditions. The table uses the previous year's gross family income and takes effect August 1, 2026. It has separate thresholds for the maximum grant and the grant cut-off. Being below the cut-off alone doesn't establish the maximum award.

Canada's page lists a dependant under 12 at the beginning of study, or over 12 with a permanent disability. Ask the aid office how the age rule applies to your child. The page says you're assessed through your provincial or territorial student-aid application. These limits are for 2026-27. They don't tell you the 2027-28 rate or your own entitlement.

The separate full-time student grant has an unresolved annual-limit conflict. Canada's page says up to $4,200 per year through 2026-27. Ontario's 2026-27 list says $6,300 per academic year, subject to a weekly maximum. The two official pages don't agree. Your assessment shows which applies, so don't add these grants into one total.

Start with your own status as the student

If you're the person applying for aid, the sole-support parent category describes you. It doesn't describe your mother or father. Under the published definition, you must have a dependent child living with you at least half the time during study. You must also have never married, or be separated, divorced or widowed. Read the common-law definition too if you live with a partner.

Your child's age and situation also matter. The full-time form defines which children count, including rules for older children in school or wholly dependent because of disability. Don't rely on a birth certificate alone to settle every condition. If you're a teenager with no child, living with a single parent doesn't make you a sole-support parent on your own application.

Ontario's common-law definition uses three continuous years of living together. It also covers a relationship of some permanence where you're the natural or adoptive parents of a child. Read both branches before choosing single or sole-support. If you're unsure how your relationship fits, ask the aid office about the exact wording.

Prepare proof of your child and custody arrangements

For 2026-27, the sole-support instructions ask for a separation agreement, divorce judgment or court order, as applicable. An affidavit is available when those documents aren't available. The evidence must state your marital status, relevant separation date and your children's names and birth dates. It must confirm that your children live with you at least 50% of the study period.

The form also asks for an attestation when an agreement or order is incomplete or outdated. That includes custody details that won't match the study period. If you're widowed, a spouse's death certificate is also requested. Tell the aid office if you can't provide it. Ask what needs updating before paying to have a document sworn.

If your parents separated, follow the household questions

The 2026-27 parent section first asks if your parents are married to each other or common-law partners. If they are, both complete it. If they aren't, the form asks about the parent you currently live with. If you moved for school, use the parent you lived with before that move. A school address doesn't let you select a different parent.

If that parent has remarried or has a common-law partner, both that parent and their new partner provide information. Otherwise, that parent completes Parent 1. The form's wording doesn't resolve every shared-home or changing-custody case. If you divide your time between homes, describe that arrangement to the aid office. Don't choose a parent just because their income is lower.

Check federal and Ontario independence separately

For a single student without dependent children, time since high school is one independence test. The published federal test is four years. The Ontario test is six. Other routes include 24 months of full-time work in a row, both parents being deceased, and specified care circumstances. The work definition requires paid work of at least 30 hours a week while you're not a full-time student.

The 2026-27 form makes the difference concrete. If you're four years out but not six, you can choose not to provide parent information. It says this removes consideration for the Ontario loan portion, Ontario grant and Student Access Guarantee funding. That isn't the same as receiving the full package as an independent student. Check before making that choice.

If you're yourself separated, divorced or widowed and have no dependent children living with you, the form has a separate question for that situation. It isn't asking about your parents' separation. The current instructions ask for proof of your own marital status. Check that section rather than assuming the time-out-of-school test is your only route.

Guardians and care arrangements need an individual check

Two official sources use different parent wording. OSAP's general help page, last modified March 27, 2017, includes legal guardians. The 2026-27 full-time application lists birth or adoptive parents, step-parents and official sponsors. It omits legal guardians. We can't use that mismatch to decide that your guardian must supply income, or that no parent information is needed.

Take the question to your school's financial-aid office with the type of care arrangement you have. The current form asks separate questions about extended society care, customary care and other Children's Aid Society support. Those questions can change the next section you complete. Living with a relative and being in a formal care arrangement aren't interchangeable answers.

Keep residency separate from your mailing address

Family status also sends you to different residency questions. One route uses Ontario as the last province where you lived for at least 12 months in a row. It excludes months of full-time college or university study. Some dependent cases can use a parent's 12-month Ontario history. The application also provides other routes, so this isn't the whole residency test.

Read the section for your category rather than borrowing a friend's answer. A new Ontario residence room doesn't settle all the questions about where you've lived. If your family moved provinces or recently arrived in Canada, ask which residency history and documents apply. Keep a dated record of the answer with your own application notes.

Check child care and support in the correct fields

Ontario says OSAP can help with child care for full-time and part-time students with children. Living expenses are listed for full-time students only. This doesn't promise that OSAP will pay your whole child-care bill. The 2026-27 form asks for child-care costs during study and tells you to leave out costs covered by other government funding, such as subsidies.

Child support has its own reporting treatment. The current government-income help sends it to other income received during study. Follow that field's instructions and threshold in your aid year's form. Don't treat a payment as exempt because it isn't wages. If you're receiving social assistance, Ontario also tells you to share the relevant funding information with your caseworker.

Ask about serious barriers to parent information

Ontario allows an extenuating parental circumstances request for a serious rift that causes a severe or permanent breakdown in the parent-child relationship. It also names situations where parents can't sign because of political unrest, civil war or related displacement. The application will tell you what supporting evidence to provide. Ask the aid office about a request before leaving required information out.

Keep this separate from the ordinary separated-parent questions. A request needs review; it doesn't promise approval. You don't need to put private family details into a public adviser enquiry to ask where to begin. Use the school's official aid channel for the documents it requests. The parent funding guide can help with the wider family budget.

Update changes and plan for the school's own bills

The application agreement requires prompt updates when your family or finances change. Tell the aid office if a separation, new partner or custody change affects what you reported. A review can change the amount or type of aid. Grants can also become loans when grant conditions aren't met. Keep the school's response rather than assuming your first estimate is final.

For 2026-27 full-time OSAP, applications are due 60 days before study ends. Documents and review requests are due 40 days before it ends. Those aren't confirmed 2027-28 dates. Check the OSAP opening guide and your school's aid office early. Compare Toronto financial aid or Waterloo financial aid with your tuition and housing payment plan.
