Choose Mechanical for the work you'll study
Mechanical Engineering studies physical systems and their design. U of T describes topics such as thermodynamics, biomechanics, manufacturing and sustainable energy. It is a direct discipline choice in Engineering. If you want to work on moving parts, machines or physical products, start with the course list. It is more useful than a rumour about grades. Look at what the degree requires before deciding it belongs first on your application.
The current program page names Bioengineering, Energy & Environment, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, and Solid Mechanics & Design as focus areas. They show how broad Mechanical can be. An interest in medical devices doesn't necessarily mean you need a life-science degree. An interest in robotics doesn't necessarily mean your strongest fit is Computer Engineering. Compare the technical work behind each interest before you choose a label.
The U of T Engineering pathway explains the shared application. This guide focuses on admission to Mechanical and the study decision around it. Mechanical belongs to the Core 8, whose first-year subjects overlap. That overlap doesn't guarantee a later transfer. Begin with a discipline you would be willing to complete if another department has no space when you ask to move.

Check courses before you compare averages
For the Ontario route, write down all five course codes: ENG4U for English, MHF4U for Advanced Functions, MCV4U for Calculus and Vectors, SCH4U for Chemistry, and SPH4U for Physics. Each needs a grade of 70% or higher for consideration. You also need one additional Grade 12 U or M course and the Ontario diploma. Missing chemistry isn't repaired by taking an extra elective.
The faculty uses the five required course subjects when calculating the Ontario Engineering admission average. A general top-six result can conceal a weak required course because it answers another question. Keep every required course visible. Use the Top 6 calculator for programs at other schools. For Toronto Engineering, calculate the five-course measure from your transcript.
U of T's FAQ says it normally assesses first attempts and considers marks in each school course as well as the average. It can use a Grade 11 mark when the relevant Grade 12 mark isn't available. A conditional offer still has final conditions to meet. If you repeated a required course because of serious circumstances, send an explanation and documents through the faculty's process. The first mark can still count.

Use the high-80s to low-90s guidance carefully
Mechanical appears in the FAQ group labelled High 80's to Low 90's. The faculty says Canadian high school admission consideration began in that range in recent years. It doesn't call the range a guaranteed cutoff, and it doesn't assign a single entry year. These details were checked October 13, 2026. Keep the school label attached whenever you compare it with another university's estimate or past entering average.
The 70% required course rule is an eligibility floor. It is not evidence that a five-course average near 70% is normally competitive for Mechanical. Likewise, the recent range can't tell you exactly what mark will win an offer next year. The applicant pool and the review of your activities also matter. Don't copy a classmate's result into a prediction for your own file.
A sensible shortlist includes more than one degree you would accept. If your marks sit below the published recent context, identify other Mechanical or general Engineering routes with requirements you can meet. Keep working on the specific subjects that need attention. Revisit the FAQ on November 1, 2026 for any more dated guidance. You don't need to purchase a made-up chance estimate to make a useful plan.

Submit both the application and the supplement
Start with the OUAC Undergraduate application, the Ontario Universities' Application Centre route. After U of T receives it, use the Engineering Applicant Portal to complete the required supplement. Mechanical uses the faculty's review process. The supplement asks for at least two ranked Engineering programs. You can rank up to four. Read your other choices closely. Each should be a degree you would accept.
You'll report an educational timeline, marks and activities. Paid work and responsibilities outside a school club can be relevant. U of T doesn't require an Engineering-only activity list. It does require an suitable reference for an activity it may verify, although it doesn't ask for reference letters. Use real dates and a supervisor who knows your involvement. Don't invent a mechanical project because you think admissions expects one.
The Personal Profile consists of three timed video responses under the current instructions. Use U of T's own practice tools and request access arrangements early if needed. During the assessment, nobody else may be present or assist you, including virtually. The faculty also rules out other applications and devices. Complete your responses yourself. The checked Mechanical entry requirements don't list Casper or an additional portfolio submission.

Allow enough time for January 15
The university's 2027 table confirms January 15, 2027 as the Engineering application date and the profile deadline. Required Engineering documents are also due then. The faculty's early sequence uses November 7 for the application and December 1 for the supplement and available evidence. In this cycle those early dates fall in 2026. They can make you eligible for earlier review, not automatically an early offer.
Don't submit the OUAC form on the last afternoon and assume the second step will appear immediately. Engineering says receipt from OUAC can take up to a week. Set your own completion target earlier, then check the portal for missing material. For all-Ontario school records, grades are normally transmitted through OUAC. Studies taken elsewhere may require uploads even if your current school is in Ontario.
Ontario Engineering review has February, March and May rounds. A held application is still awaiting a decision, not necessarily rejected. Applicant groups outside Ontario have their own rolling timing and document rules. Keep other offer-response dates visible while you wait. Our Ontario deadlines comparison is useful for planning across schools. But your Engineering portal remains the place to confirm the rules for your file.

Prepare from a provincial or international curriculum
Outside Ontario, the faculty publishes a province-by-province list rather than asking everyone to take Ontario courses. Its Alberta list includes Mathematics 30-1 and 31, Chemistry 30, Physics 30 and English Language Arts 30-1. In Saskatchewan it lists pre-calculus, calculus, chemistry, physics and the accepted English course. Senior subject marks need to satisfy the faculty's 70% floor, with much stronger results usually needed in competition.
The international page assesses the school curriculum rather than citizenship. For the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, the minimum is 30 predicted points before bonus points. Each required subject needs at least 4. International Baccalaureate applicants need chemistry, physics, English and one accepted maths option within the required qualification. Read the subject-level rules; an overall diploma total alone doesn't show that you took the necessary sciences. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations at Standard Level isn't one of Engineering's listed calculus options. Report predicted results using the requested process.
The British-patterned route requires at least three A Levels including mathematics and physics. Chemistry at AS or A Level is strongly recommended; otherwise the faculty requires Ordinary Level chemistry. Its guidance recommends B or higher and says a C or lower in a required course won't receive consideration. Other curricula have different documents. Contact the faculty if your school doesn't offer a required course instead of assuming a different credential will substitute.

Preview first year and optional co-op
U of T's Mechanical first-year list contains calculus, linear algebra, mechanics, chemistry and materials, plus Engineering Strategies & Practice. Winter includes dynamics, electrical fundamentals, computing, and an introduction to Mechanical & Industrial Engineering. This is a maths-and-science foundation with design work. A preference for making things is useful. But you'll also need patience for analysis and written explanations of how your design works.
PEY Co-op is optional. The published faculty structure can provide work experience after second and third year, with up to 20 months across the opportunities described. Mechanical's page gives examples of employers and work settings. These examples are not placements assigned to everyone. Compare the work-term calendar with family plans and housing needs, then ask about eligibility and current co-op charges before budgeting.
International tuition is $72,860 in the approved 2026-27 column. The 2027-28 INFO column shows a planned $75,770 for new entrants. The report labels this information only. Check the approved 2027 schedule before using it as a bill.
For tuition, the newest checked institutional report is 2026-27. Schedule 2 states that it will apply in Fall 2026 and Winter 2027. Engineering is $14,460 for Ontario residents and $17,730 for other Canadian residents. The faculty finance page retains a 2025-2026 table. Neither provides a confirmed Fall 2027 bill. Treat scholarships as conditional until awarded, and use the U of T aid guide for wider funding options.

Make your next action specific
Bring your course list to a guidance counsellor and confirm that all required subjects will appear on the record. Then review Mechanical's actual course sequence and compare it with the disciplines you plan to rank alongside it. Use the Toronto university hub for campus context and its residence section for a housing plan separate from admission.
Set a reminder to finish the portal tasks before their deadline. Add a November 1, 2026 reminder to check costs and grade guidance. Some direct official-page requests were blocked during this review, including the Mechanical page and provincial requirements. Their university-owned bodies were read through the web tool, and both the failed requests and successful evidence reads are recorded. No missing figure was filled with an estimate.
