U of T St. George Libraries and Study Spaces
Most St. George students split their time between Robarts for the humanities and social sciences, Gerstein for science and health, and a quieter college library. Robarts and Gerstein need a TCard to get in. Most college libraries are open to the public. Robarts Common is the only St. George study space we found open overnight: 24 hours, Sunday to Thursday, during the fall and winter terms.

Robarts: what's inside the main library
Robarts calls itself Canada's largest academic library and the hub for humanities and social sciences at U of T. Inside you'll find the Robarts Common study hall, the Robarts Library Reading Room, silent reading rooms, a Family Study Space and a reflection room with an ablution station. There are also 672 assigned study carrels and bookable study rooms throughout the building.
Several specialist libraries share the building. They include the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library, the Map and Data Library on the fifth floor, the Petro Jacyk Central & East European Resource Centre and the Richard Charles Lee Canada–Hong Kong Library. The East Asian Library and the Map and Data Library posted weekday hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the week we checked.
You need a TCard to enter. Forget it, and Robarts lets you in without one up to three times a semester. Robarts ended its 3D printing service, so use Gerstein's MADLab instead.
Robarts Common: the overnight option
Robarts Common is a five-storey wing joined to Robarts on floors 2 to 5. During the fall and winter terms, it's open 24 hours from Sunday to Thursday. Overnight hours start when Robarts Library closes. After that, you use the main entrance at 369 Huron Street, near Harbord Street.
Overnight study is for current U of T students, staff and faculty with a valid, active TCard, and you need the physical card. There's seating for 1,200 across five floors. Group rooms are first-come, first-served overnight, and the fifth floor is a quiet study area. Food and drink are allowed.
Outside Robarts Common, the latest closing we found was 11:30 p.m., at E.J. Pratt and Kelly. Robarts and Gerstein close at 11 p.m. or earlier. We didn't check all 44 library locations one by one.
Gerstein: the science and health library
Gerstein Science Information Centre calls itself Canada's largest academic science and health science library. It's at 9 King's College Circle and needs a valid TCard to enter. Like Robarts, it allows three forgotten-card entries a semester.
Gerstein posted a construction notice for fall 2026 affecting the 1-Below washrooms and the main floor, last updated September 11, 2026. The barrier-free entrance is to the left of the main entrance, under a blue canopy. Its MADLab offers 3D printing.
How to book a group study room
Book Robarts and Gerstein rooms through the library's LibCal system with your UTORid. They're only for U of T students, staff and faculty. Robarts lists 27 bookable group rooms and Robarts Common another 32.
Robarts' rooms range from ground-floor rooms for up to eight people to smaller rooms for up to five on stack floors 9 to 13. Each stack floor also has one bookable individual room. Robarts' page doesn't publish per-person booking limits.
- At Gerstein, you can't book a room on your own.
- Bookings are capped at 3 hours a week and open up to 2 weeks ahead.
- Rooms are released if nobody arrives within 15 minutes.
- Leaving for more than 20 minutes forfeits the room, and there's no eating inside.
- The Engineering & Computer Science Library, UC Library and Ivey Library also list bookable rooms.
College libraries: quieter and often closer
Every college library in the table is listed as public access, so you can study at one that isn't your own college. E.J. Pratt at Victoria and Kelly at St. Michael's stay open until 11:30 p.m. most nights. Kelly holds the McLuhan, Sheila Watson and G.K. Chesterton papers.
Innis College Library is also listed as open to all U of T students. But the directory showed it closed every day in the week of September 27, 2026, with no reason given, so check before you go. We found no separate Woodsworth College library page.
If you're visiting before you enrol
Prospective students see Robarts on the St. George campus tour. A visitor who needs specific print materials can request a free one-day pass for Robarts or Gerstein. Requests are reviewed on weekdays, with a reply within two business days.
You can get up to three one-day passes a month, and you'll need the pass email and government photo ID. After that, you need a paid library membership. The pass is for research, not for booking study rooms.
