Is the University of Toronto hard to get into?

U of T can be demanding, especially for Computer Science and Engineering, but the program matters. Its official 2025-2026 first-entry dashboard reports a 72.5% Admission Rate across the covered divisions. A Fall 2027 applicant should compare the chosen campus, required subjects, published grade guidance and extra selection steps before judging their position.

Start with the campus and category on your application

A useful difficulty check begins with the place you want to enter. Toronto has St. George, Mississauga and Scarborough campuses. Their program menus and work routes differ. Write down the campus and the full admission category or degree name. A general statement about getting into Toronto cannot replace those details on your application.

The institutional dashboard brings many first-entry choices into one measure. Its latest plotted 2025-2026 Admission Rate is 72.5%. That is useful context about the institution's reported activity. For the counts, definitions and history, use our U of T acceptance-rate guide. Your own file still has to satisfy the chosen admission unit's rules.

Separate three questions: can you enter the university, can you enter the degree or category you chose, and can you later enter the major you want? Some offers settle more of that path than others. Knowing the remaining steps helps you compare two offers on their actual terms rather than the same university name.

Which published grade bands look most demanding?

The 2027-28 bulletin lists a low-90s Approximate Grade Requirement for St. George Computer Science. It says its Ontario guidance reflects admission averages from the previous year. It does not name that cohort year beside the label. Use the number to plan your courses and alternatives, while keeping the bulletin's own description attached to it.

Engineering's current FAQ places Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Engineering Science in a low to mid-90s recent-years band. The six other Core disciplines sit in a high-80s to low-90s group. These examples show why one target for the whole university is unhelpful. The faculty also reviews individual course results and the required supplement.

Other categories use different guidance. The bulletin gives low to mid-80s for St. George Humanities and mid to high-80s for Social Sciences. Those degrees have their own required study and later program rules. Explore them if you would value their courses and outcomes. A lower published band does not make a later move into CS automatic.

Engineering uses five prerequisite subjects in its average

Ontario applicants need the stated school qualification and courses. Engineering's FAQ calculates its admission average from English, Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Chemistry and Physics. It also considers individual Grade 11 and Grade 12 results. Where Grade 12 results are unavailable, the faculty can use Grade 11 results in their place.

This changes a below-range plan. A strong elective does not enter that five-subject calculation in place of a weaker required science. List the five marks separately and identify the subjects causing the gap. Before arranging a repeat, read the first-attempt policy. The FAQ says first-attempt marks are considered and provides a route to explain genuine extenuating circumstances.

The application menu has also changed. TrackOne is paused for September 2027 and September 2028. The valid starts are the Core 8 disciplines and Engineering Science. The supplement asks for at least two and up to four choices. Read each curriculum before ranking it. Later movement between Core programs depends on performance and space.

For St. George CS, plan beyond the high school offer

The current CMP1 route sets first-year conditions for the CS Major and Specialist guarantee. They include at least 70% in CSC110Y1 and 77% in CSC111H1, the listed mathematics requirement, four credits and a timely program request within twelve months. Read the full policy because different programs and course options have different conditions.

Those are university-course requirements after admission. They should not be added to your high school average or treated as another Grade 12 cutoff. They help answer a different planning question: would you be ready for the first-year mathematical and programming work that keeps your intended degree path open after receiving the initial offer?

Use the policy for your entering cohort when accepting an offer and choosing courses. The current guarantee is a published planning reference, not a promise that every later rule will stay unchanged for a 2027 entrant. An offer to another campus or category should be judged by its own later-entry process, rather than assuming the CMP1 guarantee follows it.

Rotman has its own academic and first-year gates

Rotman's Ontario page recommends mid-high 80s or above across Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses. It asks for the six-course Ontario qualification including English and Calculus. Pay attention to the breadth of that recommendation. It is not simply a statement that any six high marks will replace weaker results in the subjects Rotman studies closely.

The supplement is another required part of the file. A high average does not make that task optional, and a completed supplement does not cancel missing academic requirements. Check the official instructions for the application you submit. Our Rotman admission guide retains the detailed course and selection requirements at their existing address.

After entry, Rotman's current second-year guarantee requires stated performance in first-year business, economics and calculus, plus four credits. Examples include 67% in RSM100 and 63% in each of ECO101 and ECO102. Price and plan the full route, including those first-year demands, rather than treating the initial university offer as the end of selection.

A realistic plan if your marks are two to five points below

First identify the benchmark you are below. A recent-years Engineering band, a bulletin's previous-year category average and Rotman's Grade 11/12 recommendation describe different things. Copy the label and source date into your plan. Do not turn any of them into a precise estimate of how many points a supplement will recover.

Next, check subject eligibility before the overall number. For Engineering, concentrate the academic review on the five required subjects. For Rotman, inspect English and Calculus as well as the broader record. Check whether all required courses are underway and whether new official grades can arrive in time for the relevant file-review stage.

Keep alternatives that you would genuinely study. Compare another eligible Toronto category or campus with its required first-year courses and later program entry. Add a choice at another university if it suits your goal and published requirements. Avoid a plan whose only appeal is an assumed transfer into a program that has not offered you a place.

Finally, complete the required file accurately and on time. Use the supplement to provide the information the faculty requests, in your own words. No published rule here lets us promise that it offsets a two-to-five-point academic gap. If your plan depends on a repeat or an unusual course history, ask the admissions office how its policy applies.

Make a complete file for the correct review process

Toronto's published 2027 calendar separates application dates from document and supplement dates. Engineering has its own applicant process. Other divisions use their relevant checklist. Put each required task on your calendar with its program name. A date copied from a friend's Arts application may leave an Engineering or Commerce task unfinished.

Engineering's supplement includes program choices, an educational timeline through June 2027, academic information, activities and a personal profile. The faculty says a missing supplement prevents admission consideration. It also explains that incomplete academic reporting can delay review. This makes careful completion part of an admission plan, even when your grades already match a published range.

Read requests from the university and supply the documents it actually asks for. Keep a record of submission and follow the official channel for changes. Our Toronto deadline guide organizes the public dates. It cannot show your private checklist or confirm that the university has accepted your individual file as complete.

Keep the cost of the intended degree in the plan

Admission is only useful if the degree plan is workable for your household. The approved 2026-27 report lists Ontario-resident domestic Arts & Science first-year tuition at $6,220. This excludes student fees and living costs. Other programs and fee-status groups have different rows. Ontario high school study alone does not decide whether a student pays domestic tuition.

Later CS and Commerce tuition differs from the ordinary first-year Arts & Science amount. Engineering has its own fee schedule. The Toronto tuition guide keeps those stages visible. Approved Fall 2027 prices remain pending in these reference figures, so retain a dated budget and update it before committing to costs.

Add housing, meals, books and the time spent in study or work terms. Use the Toronto residence chapter and financial-aid guide for those decisions. Work programs have their own entry and employer selection. An admission offer does not secure a paid job that will cover your bill.
