Build a university application list you can manage for 2027

For Fall 2027, start by comparing three to five universities and about four to six program choices. This is a starting point, not an official rule. Adjust it to your subjects, budget and time. Count both totals: three programs at one university still mean one university, while one program at each of three universities means three.

Key facts

Use a planning range
Three to five universities is an editorial starting exercise, not an official admission target or prediction.
Count program choices
The OUAC Ontario-school handout covers three program choices in its base fee. University names are a separate count.
Keep application work visible
Extra choices can involve different portals, required subjects, documents and supporting tasks.
Keep the fee scope
The current 2027 Ontario-high-school handout prints $159 for three choices and $51 each extra. Other applicant charges are not calculated here.

The same university count can produce different choice totals

These are editorial sample lists, using only the base and extra-choice charges printed in the current OUAC Ontario-school handout.

Use the starting range to begin research, then change it for a reason

Three to five universities is a way to begin a comparison. It is a starting point, not an official number you must reach. You may finish with fewer because location or cost narrows your options. You may need more because your intended subject has several distinct entry routes. The useful question is what another choice adds to your plan.

Start with degrees you want to complete. For each one, note the campus, required subjects and study format. Then ask whether you'd accept that place if it were your only offer. Remove a degree you wouldn't attend. Adding a university name without a real course choice makes the list longer without making the plan clearer. Use the Ontario university directory to begin and the program requirements directory for detailed course checks. Keep a short reason beside each program so you can explain why it belongs.

Keep a university count and a program-choice count

A list of universities hides the number of actual applications. Toronto says you can apply to up to three different programs or campuses in one cycle, but only once per program area. It also explains that some subjects sit inside a broader admission category. Biology in St. George Arts and Science, for example, uses the Life Science category. You need to know what the application entry actually represents.

Waterloo publishes a maximum of three programs, with only one Engineering program on OUAC. Its alternate Engineering form is a separate step. Write your selected application codes in one column and the university in another. Count the entries in each column. This stops you from describing three Waterloo entries as three universities, or treating several later majors as several direct-entry choices. The Toronto program chapter and Waterloo program chapter can help you compare the degree structure before you spend money.

Check your subjects before assigning a place on the list

Read the prerequisites and grade basis for each degree. Guelph says its average uses six eligible completed courses, including required subjects. Where completed marks aren't available, its stated calculation can use a mix of completed and in-progress courses. Your report-card average alone may not answer the program's question.

Group your notes by what is clear and what needs work. You might meet a published subject set now, need a course you are taking next term, or need admissions to confirm an unusual equivalent. Those are useful distinctions. Labels such as safe school can hide them. UTSC warns that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Keep an option with requirements that fit your record, but don't promise yourself an offer. Use the Ontario admission averages hub to read published minima and ranges with the right labels. Resolve missing subjects before relying on a larger application count.

Choose alternatives that would change a real outcome

An alternative should give you a course of study you'd value if another choice doesn't work out. It might offer a different campus, a broader first-year category or a different work-study format. Compare that difference with your priorities. Several similarly selective courses can leave you facing the same unresolved subject gap.

Toronto's admission categories show why more entries aren't always needed for every possible major. Its instructions explain that many students explore within a category before choosing a specialist, major or minor later. Check the actual program structure instead of adding an application for every career idea. Ask what you can study from that entry route and what later selection may require. Use the Toronto university hub to find the relevant faculty. A choice should add something you understand, not only a different label beside the same plan.

Put the application workload beside each program

Count the tasks as well as the fees. Toronto describes an initial OUAC application followed by next steps in its applicant portals. Those portals identify required records and any supplemental work. A completed OUAC entry does not finish every university's file. Check what each new choice will require before adding it.

Make a calendar with separate spaces for the application, supporting documents and any required form or interview. Waterloo Engineering, excluding Architecture, lists January 15, 2027 for applying and February 1 for documents. Keep those as two tasks. If several programs need work in the same week, ask whether you have enough time alongside school. Complete assessed responses yourself and follow the university's rules about assistance. The Waterloo deadline guide keeps its dates together. Limit the final list to applications you can complete carefully, including the tasks that arrive after you submit.

Calculate the choice charges before you extend the list

The current OUAC Ontario-high-school handout prints $159 for the first three university or program choices, then $51 for each extra choice. Its calendar includes 2027 dates. That gives the basis for the table's arithmetic. Four choices produce $210 in those charges, while six produce $312. These examples count entries, not the number of different universities.

They calculate only the two charges in that handout. Check the actual application total before paying, especially when your applicant route or program requires a separate fee assessment. This table does not price every Group B file or every document task. Use the Canadian university application-fees guide for the wider comparison and keep your budget tied to the official amount shown for your own application. Set an application budget before adding another name. Spend it on a choice you would use, rather than treating a fee as a reason to keep a degree you no longer want.

Use the current application route and the right deadline row

Keep the current Undergraduate Application name in your notes. UTSC's Ontario-school page uses it for both Group A current students meeting its criteria and Group B recent graduates. Use the OUAC Group A and Group B guide for the complete route comparison and the older 101 and 105 wording. Don't build separate lists around an old form name.

Your route can change the calendar. Laurier lists January 15, 2027 for Ontario high school fall applications and April 1 for all other applicants. Keep that distinction when a parent or friend shares a deadline. A useful choice must still be available to your applicant category and submitted on time. Read the Laurier deadline guide and the Toronto deadline guide where relevant. Save program-specific instructions with the calendar. A longer list should not come at the cost of missing the task needed for the degree you most want.

Check the cost of attending before paying to apply

An application fee is only the first budget decision. Compare the cost of attending each place using the living arrangement you expect. Include travel, housing and meals where relevant. A commuting choice and a residence choice can create very different family plans even if their application costs are similar.

Use the Guelph residence chapter or Laurier residence chapter to research housing. Keep Laurier financial aid and Guelph financial aid beside the cost notes. Talk about what your family can pay and which funding is confirmed. Toronto's application instructions also direct students to its portals for residence and financial-aid tasks. Record those later steps. A university that you could not attend at any realistic cost needs a funding question answered before it becomes a useful extra application.

Stop adding choices when the next one has no clear purpose

Before submitting, review the list without looking at the total. Does each degree suit your interests? Have you checked the required courses? Can you finish its tasks and consider its cost? If the answers are clear, the list may be ready even if it is shorter than your original exercise. Add a choice when it fills a specific gap you can explain.

The rules here come from OUAC's Ontario high school PDF and the universities' own pages. The fee examples keep that PDF's Ontario-school and 2027 context. Program-choice rules give no year, so confirm them before you apply. Use the OUAC application help guide for the full submission process. Keep the starting range as a planning tool while the official rules decide what each application must contain.
