When does OSAP open for 2027-28, and when should you apply?

The OSAP opening date for 2027-28 isn't published yet. Last cycle's TMU notice expected a June opening for 2026-27; it didn't confirm the actual day. U of T's annual guidance says May. Apply once the correct year's form opens, then follow your school's early target. Don't treat either month as a confirmed 2027 date.

Reviewed against each row's official source. Recheck the source before you act, because dates and fees change.

An opening month is still unknown until the right cycle is published

OSAP means the Ontario Student Assistance Program. Its application year matters as much as the month a page mentions. For a Fall 2027 start, look for the 2027-28 form and instructions. A live government page headed 2026-27 doesn't announce the next cycle. As of October 16, 2026, the checked government deadline page still carries that older heading. The honest answer is that the 2027-28 opening day hasn't been published in these sources.

The university guidance also needs careful labels. U of T says OSAP typically opens in May. TMU's notice dated April 23, 2026 expected the 2026-27 application in June. Those statements have different scope: one describes an annual pattern and the other was a forecast for the prior cycle. Neither is proof of the day the 2027-28 system opens. We haven't chosen one month and turned it into a new government announcement.

Keep the unknown opening as a recheck task, rather than an exact date in your calendar. This guide is due for another source check November 1, 2026, with a further check in spring 2027 for the new form. Those are editorial review targets, not OSAP deadlines. When the government publishes the cycle, use that dated instruction. Until then, you can prepare your information and compare school costs without submitting an application for the wrong academic year.

Apply early enough for assessment, not at the final cutoff

An early target gives the school time to review the application before fees are due. It isn't the same as the last date the government accepts a form. McMaster recommends applying and uploading required documents by June 30 for September funding. Its instruction has no year attached, so it is an annual recommendation. Use it for planning while you wait for the school's 2027-28 guidance. Don't label June 30, 2027 as a confirmed province-wide deadline.

Schools don't all use the same early target. Waterloo's current table recommends June 15, 2026 for full-time fall and fall-winter study in 2026-27. It gives different rows for part-time study. The date shows why a general June 30 answer can be too broad. For Fall 2027, wait for the matching table and follow the route you're actually taking. The older target can explain the process, but it doesn't fill the unpublished 2027-28 calendar.

Processing estimates aren't promises of payment. U of T says an estimate can take about four to six weeks after the application and all required documents are submitted, if you qualify. TMU's prior-cycle notice gave its own estimate. Missing information can still hold up a file. Start while there is time to respond to requests. A form submitted early but left without required documents hasn't completed the same task as a fully reviewed application.

The full-time deadline is measured from the end of your studies

The government's latest available full-time page sets the application deadline at 60 days before the study period ends. It explicitly says 2026-27. Universities describe the same standing rule in their current instructions, but the government's 2027-28 page still needs to be checked when published. The rule isn't 60 days after classes start. It also isn't one fixed winter date that applies to every course pattern. Your recorded study period is the key input.

Fall-only and fall-winter applications can therefore have different final dates. A co-op term or a program with a different finish date can change the calendar too. Use the study dates recorded for your program and the correct school table. Don't count backwards from a friend's last exam or a residence move-out day. Those events may not be the study-period end used for OSAP. Ask financial aid to confirm the dates if your enrolment pattern doesn't match the standard row.

For a concrete prior-cycle example, Waterloo's 2026-27 full-time fall-winter table lists February 28, 2027 as its final application date. TMU's standard undergraduate 2026-27 fall-winter table lists March 2, 2027. The difference reflects their published study periods. Neither date belongs to the academic year starting in Fall 2027. This is why copying the newest-looking year from a web search can produce the wrong deadline even when the source is official.

Required documents and review requests have another cutoff

Submitting the form is only part of applying. The government's 2026-27 full-time instructions require supporting documents no later than 40 days before study ends. A request for a review has the same cutoff on that page. Documents received after it aren't considered and funding may stop. These are the current published full-time rules. The dates and conditions for 2027-28 remain subject to that cycle's instructions. Keep the document task separate from the 60-day application task.

Check the required-items list in your own OSAP account after submitting. It can ask for information that depends on your situation. McMaster's instructions include completing the loan agreement and the later enrolment check where required. A saved document on your computer hasn't reached the reviewer. Follow the upload or delivery instructions and keep proof of submission. If a document is rejected, read the stated reason and correct that item while there is still time.

The prior-cycle examples remain useful only with their labels. Waterloo's standard 2026-27 fall-winter document and appeal date is March 20, 2027. TMU's standard full-time undergraduate 2026-27 document date is March 22, 2027. Those are different from their application dates and aren't Fall 2027 deadlines. Avoid merging the two columns into one reminder. If you need a review of your assessment, ask your financial-aid office which request and evidence are required before the relevant cutoff.

Full-time, part-time and other forms aren't interchangeable

McMaster explains that full-time and part-time OSAP are separate programs with separate applications. A change in your course load can affect which one applies. Don't choose a form just because it appeared first or because a friend used it. Ask the school to confirm your program's course load and study period if you are unsure. The main OSAP guide owns eligibility and the wider application process. This page keeps the timing distinctions visible.

Waterloo also publishes separate tables for full-time, part-time and micro-credential funding. Its current part-time table combines application and document deadlines, unlike the full-time 60-day and 40-day split. TMU separates its standard undergraduate periods from Chang School and graduate periods. Those distinctions remain relevant even when two rows both say fall. The full-time dates on this page shouldn't be applied to another form. Read the named category in the official table before adding a calendar reminder.

Funding approval and university payment dates are separate

A funding estimate doesn't prove money has reached the university. The school still checks enrolment and follows its release process. McMaster says you remain responsible for any balance OSAP doesn't cover and for its fee-payment deadlines. U of T describes a fee-deferral route for people receiving OSAP, with the deadline depending on the area of study. Ask about that process directly. Don't assume an OSAP application automatically changes the date on your university bill.

Prepare a plan for early admission and residence commitments while the new funding cycle is pending. Compare the Ontario residence guide and university response-date guide. School-specific funding details remain in the Waterloo aid guide, McMaster aid guide and U of T aid guide. Their estimates aren't an entitlement. No future grant amount or September 2027 payment day is confirmed here just because a previous cycle used one.

Ontario's general how-to-apply page couldn't be read during this check. The separate government deadline page was readable. It still names 2026-27. We haven't used the blocked page to confirm an opening. Its failed fetch is recorded with the source evidence, so a later review can revisit it.
