McGill vs U of T

how should an Ontario applicant choose?

Choose McGill or U of T by matching the degree, campus and later program rules you want. McGill Arts normally starts with Foundation U0 for Ontario students without advanced standing. Toronto has three campuses and distinct admission categories. For Fall 2027, neither school publishes one grade cutoff that describes every undergraduate choice.

Name the two offers you would actually compare

McGill versus Toronto is too broad to decide from a single reputation claim. A McGill Arts offer and a Toronto Engineering offer lead to very different required courses. Even within one field, Toronto's campus matters. St. George, Mississauga and Scarborough do not share every admission category, timetable or work option. Put the campus and degree beside each name on your shortlist.

McGill also has distinct faculty and location choices. Its Ontario requirements page identifies the programs on the Macdonald campus separately. Do not assume every McGill degree has the same first year or downtown setting. Start from the faculty you would enter, then read the academic structure for that degree. A general university comparison should lead you to those choices, not erase them.

Write down two subjects you want to study and one you might choose if your interests change. Check whether each offer lets you reach those paths and what later requirements apply. An admission category may provide access to a first-year course set without reserving every upper-year program. That distinction is more useful than a list of broad international rankings.

Read grade guidance at the faculty and category level

McGill's Ontario table calls its figures Typical Minimum Admission Grades Ranges. For Arts, both the Top 6 and core English or French column show high 80s to low 90s. The page says these are guidelines, that space affects selection and that matching them does not guarantee entry. No cohort year sits beside those ranges, so they are not a dated Fall 2027 cutoff.

Toronto's domestic 2027-28 bulletin uses Approximate Grade Requirement. It explains that the figures reflect admission averages from the previous year. St. George Humanities shows low to mid 80s, while Social Sciences shows mid to high 80s. Different campus rows have different figures. The publication year is known; the previous admission cohort is not named in that explanation.

Those Arts examples can help assess a shortlist, but they cannot prove that one whole university is easier. Computing, Engineering and other selected routes use their own subjects and figures. Keep the exact category and label with each number. Our McGill admission guide and Toronto admissions hub lead to the more specific rules.

Calculate an eligible Ontario course set twice

McGill calculates its own Top 6. It needs at least six eligible courses, including a core 4U English or French course and all required subjects. At least four courses and all prerequisites must be at the 4U or DU level. Only two 4M courses may count. The page also limits which technology and physical education courses qualify.

Toronto requires English for admission, together with the other subjects named for the category. A high French mark that meets McGill's core-language rule does not replace Toronto's English requirement. The Ontario diploma and six-course framework still apply. If you are comparing Engineering or Science, add the exact maths and science requirements before you calculate either average.

You may therefore have different assessed averages at the two schools using the same transcript. That is not a calculation error. It reflects different inclusion rules. List the six courses each school would use and flag uncertain codes for admissions staff. Do not swap in a higher elective if a required course must be included, and do not assume every mixed course is accepted by McGill.

Understand Foundation U0 and later program entry

McGill Arts calls its initial foundation stage U0. It applies to high school entrants without enough advanced standing to move past that stage. The general option spreads core courses across academic areas; an En Francais option has its own French-taught core. This is a BA structure, not a rule for every faculty. Advanced-standing credits can change where an individual student starts.

The U0 label can confuse an Ontario family because U1 sounds like first year. Read the full credit plan instead. McGill's Arts guidance explains the foundation and later departmental programs within the degree. An ordinary Ontario high school entrant should not infer an extra fifth year simply from the label. Confirm your own credit total and any exemptions after the university assesses them.

Toronto has a separate distinction between the admission category and the later program of study. Some programs have open entry, while others require specific courses, marks or further selection. The St. George CS guarantee is one named example with detailed first-year conditions. It is not a rule for all Toronto students. If a later major is essential, check that major's entry conditions before choosing the category.

Check extra material rather than assuming an essay

Neither university has one universal supplementary application for all high school programs. McGill's Ontario page flags additional documents and separate applications for named choices. For example, its Arts listing distinguishes particular programs from the general BA route. Use the exact program and applicant checklist, especially if you are applying to a performance, design or professional field.

Toronto's bulletin likewise lists selected programs and campuses that ask for extra material. Engineering, Rotman Commerce and campus-specific computing choices are not interchangeable applications. A deadline or assessment format from one should not be copied to another. After applying, check the university portal for the tasks tied to your actual choices.

If you do not receive an expected invitation, resolve it before the deadline. An OUAC application does not by itself complete every university task. Keep your own responses within the school's authorship rules, and use its official technical practice where provided. This comparison helps you compare requirements; it does not turn a supplement into an optional extra just because another degree has none.

Compare the work route attached to your degree

McGill Engineering describes an Internship Program for named disciplines and mandatory co-op in Mining, Materials and Software Engineering. That is a more precise answer than saying McGill has co-op or has no co-op. A student in another degree needs that degree's work and internship rules. Faculty-specific access cannot be stretched into a university-wide promise.

Toronto separates work routes by campus and faculty. Its overview names Arts & Science internships, Engineering's PEY route, Mississauga internships and Scarborough co-op. For St. George Arts & Science, ASIP is limited enrolment and includes its own application, fees and work requirements. A Toronto offer does not automatically place every student in the same work program.

Compare when work happens, how long it lasts, whether it is required and how students apply. Ask whether it changes graduation timing or housing needs. Employer selection still matters. A work program can support a search without guaranteeing a job, and a past graduate's result is not a salary forecast. Use the sequence you would follow, not the largest marketing headline.

Match fee residency and the full course load

For a domestic Ontario applicant, McGill's non-Quebec Canadian category is the relevant starting point unless an approved exception applies. Its selected 2026-27 BA table lists $12,985.50 tuition for thirty credits in the since-Fall-2025 Rate A column. Other charges are extra. Earlier cohorts and listed citizenship exceptions have different treatment; do not pick the lowest column without checking eligibility.

Toronto's 2026-27 report lists $6,220 in Ontario Arts & Science first-year tuition. That does not describe every Toronto degree or every later year. Some professional and upper-year program fees are higher. Compare the McGill fee guide and Toronto fee guide with the same residency, load and stage of study selected.

The current schedules do not confirm Fall 2027 prices. Build a dated reference budget, then add student charges, housing, food and travel for your own circumstances. Check aid eligibility and payment timing separately from the advertised award amount. A smaller tuition figure may not yield a smaller household cost if the housing or travel plan differs substantially.

Keep application and later checklist dates separate

McGill's dated calendar confirms February 1, 2027 for applicants from Canadian high schools outside Quebec in the listed faculties. Music has a separate route and deadline. Toronto's main Fall 2027 application deadline is January 15. Follow the program-specific document and assessment rows as well. Applying to both requires two sets of university follow-up tasks.

McGill's Ontario requirements page also lists self-reporting periods and supporting-document dates, but those entries do not print a year. They remain current yearless guidance until your portal confirms the cycle. Do not silently attach 2027 to every date on a page that includes one known application deadline. Our McGill calendar and Toronto calendar preserve those distinctions.

Before accepting, return to the actual offer, its conditions and the course route it permits. Use the McGill hub and Toronto hub for housing and support. Keep a second plan you would willingly take. A strong choice links your interests, later program access and a workable budget; it does not require declaring one university best for everyone.
