Programs and OUAC codes
You pick one Faculty of Music program on OUAC, then up to two programs or instruments in the Music Questionnaire. U of T lists these codes: TX for Music Performance (Classical or Jazz, MusBacPerf), TD for Music Education (Classical or Jazz), and TZ for Composition, Interdisciplinary Music Studies, History, Culture and Theory, and Music Technology and Digital Media.
Both degrees need 20.0 credits. Performance, Composition, Interdisciplinary Music Studies and Music Education students start their specialty in first year. Other Bachelor of Music students start in an Exploratory Year of core courses.

Course requirements
Ontario students need the OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses, including ENG4U. U of T notes that the "out of school" part of Grade 12 co-op courses won't count for admission. There's no required math, science or music course.
U of T can make early offers using your Grade 11 and Grade 12 marks, as long as you're taking all required Grade 12 courses. Use our course planner to set up your six courses.

The average you need
U of T says the admission cut-off average for Music typically varies between 78% and 82%, depending on the year. It says the mean for admission ranges from 83% to 88%. If you repeat a course, the Faculty may use your first attempt, especially in English.
These are published ranges, not a promise. U of T calls the audition, interview and portfolios key elements of the decision, and says your academic record is also critical. Both count. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

Audition, interview and theory test
Every applicant auditions. Classical applicants play prepared pieces in the Western art style, and U of T uses Royal Conservatory of Music levels as a guide, though RCM exams aren't required. Jazz applicants first send a pre-screening video. Only some are then invited to audition with three tunes from an approved list.
If you live within 300 km of Toronto, you must audition in person, unless you apply only to Music Technology and Digital Media in the classical stream. If you live further away, you may send a recorded audition and do the interview online. U of T says your audition method depends on your program and distance.
Every applicant does at least one interview. The panel asks about your audition pieces and your goals. A skills test may ask you to name intervals and chords, sing back a melody, or sight-read.
If you're recommended for admission, you write the U of T Entrance Theory Exam and need at least 60%. The classical exam covers material similar to RCM Level 8 Theory. U of T no longer accepts outside theory credentials instead of this exam.
- The Music Questionnaire includes a short essay of 250 to 1,000 words on one of four questions.
- You name two referees, such as music teachers. Letters are due January 31.
- U of T charges a non-refundable $75 audition and interview fee through OUAC. You also pay for your own accompanist if you need one.

Composition and music technology portfolios
Direct-entry Composition needs scores for at least four works totalling at least 15 minutes, written for a variety of ensembles, with no popular or commercial music. It's due January 31. Late portfolios move you to the Exploratory Year instead.
Music Technology and Digital Media asks for three to five works across two or three categories, such as original compositions or music for film and other media. MTDM applicants also do an online interview about the portfolio.

Dates for Fall 2027
U of T recommends you submit your OUAC application by December 1, 2026. About a week after OUAC sends it, you get an email with your applicant ID so you can enable your JOINid. You need that before you can open the Music Questionnaire.
The final questionnaire deadline is January 15, 2027, and U of T suggests sending it by January 8. Auditions run February 1 to March 3, 2027. Results come by mid-April. See more dates on our Ontario deadlines page.

Co-op and work experience
The Faculty of Music doesn't list a co-op program for its degrees. Its fees and support pages list a Work Study Program instead. The core curriculum includes a course called Lives in Music, a survey of career paths that begin with a music degree.

Tuition for 2026-27
Music students pay a flat program fee for fall and winter, not a per-course fee. U of T's Tuition Explorer lists the 2026-27 Bachelor of Music program fee at $6,220.00 for Ontario residents, plus $2,615.31 in incidental and system access fees, for a total of $8,835.31.
For 2026-27, non-Ontario Canadians pay a $7,610.00 program fee ($10,225.31 total). International students pay $50,490.00, for a total of $54,053.31 with fees and health insurance. U of T says fees depend on your program, year of admission and status. Residence, food and an accompanist are extra.

Scholarships
All applicants are automatically considered for Faculty of Music Entrance Scholarships. U of T bases them on your audition and academic record, and usually sends news with your offer. Some awards are set aside for Ontario residents with financial need. U of T recommends the UTAPS Need Navigator, due February 18, 2027.
U of T's central awards, such as the National Scholar and President's Scholars of Excellence, have also gone to music students in past years. Browse more in our scholarship finder.

How the options compare
Choose Music Performance (TX) if you want to focus on your instrument from day one. Choose Music Education (TD) if you plan to teach. History, Culture and Theory, Composition, Interdisciplinary Music Studies and Music Technology share code TZ, and you narrow it down in the questionnaire.
You can list two choices in the questionnaire. Applying to both a jazz and a classical program, or on two instruments, means more than one audition.

For parents
Expect real costs before any offer: the OUAC fee, the $75 audition fee, an accompanist for many instruments, and travel to Toronto if you live within 300 km. Residence applications are due March 31, before audition results arrive.
The theory exam is a common surprise. Encourage theory study in the fall. Read our U of T guide for campus context.
