About St. Michael's

Entity and degree answer

A federated U of T college—not a separate undergraduate destination

The University of St. Michael's College is an independent Catholic university federated with the University of Toronto. For undergraduate planning, St. Michael's is a college within the U of T Faculty of Arts & Science system: students are admitted by U of T, become college members, and graduate with University of Toronto degrees.

Institutional status

Established in 1852 by the Basilian Fathers, St. Michael's is an independent Catholic university and one of three federated colleges within the University of Toronto, alongside Victoria and Trinity.

Undergraduate status

St. Michael's College undergraduates are U of T Faculty of Arts & Science students and receive University of Toronto degrees, with federation giving access to roughly 700 undergraduate programs.

Membership role

The college runs registrarial advising from Brennan Hall, residence for 680 students, awards, first-year seminars, Kelly Library, and community for roughly 5,000 college members.

Catholic identity

Grounded in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition while stating that it welcomes faculty and students from every background who want to participate in its life.

Separate graduate route

The Regis St. Michael's Faculty of Theology, formed when the USMC Faculty of Theology federated with Regis College in 2022, runs graduate and ministry theology degrees—not undergraduate admission.

Use the University of Toronto requirements—not a made-up St. Michael's cutoff

Admission category, prerequisites, grades, supplemental work, deadlines, tuition, and the undergraduate degree come from U of T. Use the University of Toronto admissions guide for the application itself; use this page to compare St. Michael's membership, programs, residence, awards, and community.

Fall 2027 cycle status

2027 pending · Fall 2027

UNIVERSITY-LEVEL. U of T's live dates-and-deadlines page is still labelled for 2026 entry: November 7 recommended early consideration, a February 2 final OUAC deadline for Arts & Science St. George, decisions released from January through late May, and September 11 for deferral requests. No Fall 2027 U of T dates are published yet. COLLEGE-LEVEL, St. Michael's publishes no application dates of its own because it does not run an undergraduate application.

The early-November and early-February pattern recurs annually, so treat November 2026 and early February 2027 as working planning dates only—verify future.utoronto.ca and OUAC once the Fall 2027 cycle posts.

St. Michael's admission

How St. Michael's College membership works

Apply to a U of T St. George Arts & Science admission category, then list up to three college preferences—or no preference—on the application. St. Michael's does not require a separate college profile, and college membership is confirmed with the U of T offer.

  1. 1. Apply to a University of Toronto St. George Faculty of Arts & Science admission category through OUAC or the applicable U of T application route.
  2. 2. List up to three college preferences on the Arts & Science application, or select no preference.
  3. 3. Rank St. Michael's first if you want its admission awards: the college states preference goes to applicants who select SMC first when admission awards are distributed.
  4. 4. Do not submit a separate St. Michael's applicant profile: U of T says St. Michael's has no additional college application requirement.
  5. 5. Review the college membership named in the U of T offer. Preference is considered but a specific college is not guaranteed.
  6. 6. Apply for residence separately in StarRez and meet the current guarantee, ranking, offer, and deposit steps.
No membership supplement

U of T says St. Michael's has no additional college application requirement. Your admission category may still require a program supplement, so follow the U of T portal checklist.

Preference is not a guarantee

U of T prioritizes stated preferences, but every Arts & Science student is assigned a college and a particular preference is not guaranteed. Membership changes are not normally facilitated.

St. Michael's programs

Four sponsored U of T Arts & Science programs

St. Michael's sponsors four distinctive interdisciplinary undergraduate programs. They are open under Faculty of Arts & Science program rules to students across the college system; joining St. Michael's is not a prerequisite for studying them.

Book and Media Studies

Interdisciplinary study of books, print, publishing, media, communication, and material and digital cultures, with a hands-on letterpress component in BMS110Y1 The Printed Book.

Celtic Studies

Interdisciplinary study of the history, mythology, literature, politics, languages, and cultures of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, with Irish-language instruction from absolute beginner level.

Christianity and Culture

Major and Minor plus a distinct Minor in Christianity and Education whose courses are recognized by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association as equivalent to required ministry courses.

Mediaeval Studies

Specialist, Major, or Minor spanning mediaeval history, literature, philosophy, religion, art, languages, and material culture, supported by the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies on campus.

Undergraduate study versus graduate theology

Christianity and Culture is an undergraduate Arts & Science program. The Regis St. Michael's Faculty of Theology is a separate graduate and ministry-focused academic entity. Do not treat its MDiv, MTS, MRE, ThM, DMin, MA, or PhD routes as direct-entry undergraduate programs.

SMC One: the first-year seminars only college members can take

This is the clearest reason to rank St. Michael's. Four small first-year seminars carry international learning components that are unusual anywhere in Canada—but only one of them publishes a cost.

SMC188H1 / SMC189H1

The Gilson Seminar in Faith and Ideas / Faith in Rome

Full-year seminar on Christianity and the arts, science, philosophy, and politics, with an eleven-day learning experience in Rome and Assisi. Published ancillary fee not to exceed $3,000 for room, board, and programming; students pay their own airfare.

SMC165H1

The Boyle Seminar in Scripts and Stories

Celtic influences in the mediaeval world and early books as historical artifacts, with a trip to Dublin after the April exam period. Not eligible for the CR/NCR option.

SMC155H1

The McLuhan Seminar in Creativity and Technology

Creativity and technology in the tradition of Marshall McLuhan, who taught at St. Mike's from 1946 until his death in 1980, with a Silicon Valley trip during reading week.

SMC135H1

The Donovan Seminar in Visual Art and Meaning

Loretto

All-women residence of roughly 89 residents: 42 singles, 38 doubles, and 9 graduate ensuites. Has its own chapel, dining hall, and fitness room, runs a separate fee schedule, and charges an $11.50-per-semester residence council fee.

Queen's Park, Historic Houses, Upper Brennan

The remaining three of the six St. Michael's buildings, priced on the same main residence schedule as Elmsley and Sorbara.

Budget from the fees page, not the building tour pages

The 2026–2027 schedule above and the individual building pages disagree. Sorbara still quotes a single at $13,444 and labels it 2025-26, Elmsley quotes a double at $12,452, and Loretto quotes a single at $12,564 on its own separate schedule. The residence-life fees page is the one to plan against.

Fall 2027 guarantee dates are not yet confirmed here

The current St. Michael's page documents the 2026–2027 process below. Treat it as prior-cycle evidence and follow the new StarRez, ranking, offer, deposit, and cancellation dates for Fall 2027. The trap is the two-week ranking window: it starts from your offer date, not a fixed calendar date, so you can lose guarantee status while still inside the March 31 window.

  • March 31, 2026, 11:59 p.m. EST — first-year deadline to confirm residence interest on StarRez.
  • Within two weeks of your admission offer — rank residence choices on StarRez or lose guarantee status.
  • February 20, 2026 — returning-resident application deadline for first-round offers.
  • March 15, 2026 — upper-year and waitlist offers begin.
  • June through August 2026 — rolling first-year residence offers after the June 1 offer-acceptance deadline.
  • July 21, 2026 — second $1,000 deposit due; upper-year residents instead pay one $2,000 deposit at offer.
  • August 30, 2026 — first-year move-in.

How the first-year residence guarantee actually works

2026–2027 process · Latest published information; newer cycle not yet confirmed

COLLEGE-LEVEL, 2026–2027. Two steps preserve the guarantee: confirm interest in residence on StarRez by 11:59 p.m. EST on March 31, and then rank residence choices on StarRez within two weeks of receiving your admission offer. Offers roll out from June through August after the June 1 offer-acceptance deadline, with first-year move-in on August 30. Returning residents applied by 11:59 p.m. ET on February 20 for first-round offers and upper-year offers began March 15. The college states plainly that the guarantee does not guarantee a specific residence or your top choice.

The two-week ranking window is the trap: it starts from your offer date, not from a fixed calendar date, so a student who defers reading the StarRez email can lose guarantee status while still inside the March 31 window.

St. Michael's costs and awards

U of T tuition plus St. Michael's awards and grants

St. Michael's membership does not create a separate undergraduate tuition schedule. Tuition follows the student's U of T campus, Faculty of Arts & Science program, year, and domestic or international status. Residence and meal plans are separate college costs.

Admission awards with published values

Consideration is automatic on admission and recipients are notified in the letter of offer—but the college states preference goes to applicants who ranked St. Michael's first. Most of these carry Ontario-residency and Canadian-citizenship conditions; the H. T. Kelly, Unger Family, and Gerald S. Horgan awards are the ones explicitly open to international applicants.

SMC WORTHI Award
$7,500

Renewable at a C+ GPA minimum. Domestic Arts & Science students with a STEM focus, immigrant status, and financial need.

Sutton Family Scholarship
$4,000

Renewable in acceptable standing. Faculty of Arts & Science, any Canadian province or territory, preference for financial need.

Honourable H. T. Kelly Memorial Scholarship
$3,000–$4,000

Renewable at a 3.5 GPA. Merit-based on a high-80s average and explicitly open to international as well as domestic applicants.

Clayton W. Kehoe Scholarship
$3,000 then $1,500

Renewable at a 3.50 GPA. Humanities or Social Sciences, Ontario resident with regional priority, includes a residence component.

Pope Leo XIV Admission Scholarship
$2,500

Renewable at a 3.5 GPA. High-80s average, financial need, Ontario resident, St. Michael's as first-choice college.

King Charles III Admission Scholarship
About $2,000

Renewable at a 3.5 GPA and includes a residence credit. High-80s average, financial need, Ontario resident, SMC first choice.

Melissa Clubbe Memorial Admission Scholarship
$2,000

Renewable at a 3.0 GPA. Ontario high-school graduate with a mid-80s average in Humanities or Social Sciences, SMC first choice.

Louis L. Odette Residence Scholarship
About $5,400

Largest of the residence-contingent awards. Requires taking a St. Michael's residence place, financial need, and Ontario residency.

Admission awards

Automatic on admission for SMC-first applicants. The exceptions are the Janet Elizabeth Faulds Award, which can be applied for or won by nomination, and the Catholic Women's League scholarship, which is administered externally.

In-course awards

Academic standing, program, community service, year, financial need, or residence can determine eligibility for named awards.

Grants and bursaries

Eligible students generally use U of T's Undergraduate Grant Application in ACORN. Some residence bursaries credit the housing account.

Cycle-label warning

St. Michael's main awards page still labels many sections 2025–2026 and includes past deadlines. Do not copy those dates into a Fall 2027 plan. Use the live applicant portal, ACORN, Award Explorer, and current college notices to confirm values and deadlines.

A U of T home base with academic and community support

College membership provides registrar advising, orientation, mentorship, commuter and residence community, student groups, intramurals, awards, and academic support while students use the wider St. George campus. Kelly Library and the Academic Success Centre are prominent St. Michael's resources.

Catholic identity and inclusion

The College's mission is grounded in Catholic intellectual and spiritual traditions while explicitly welcoming students and faculty from every background.

Student government and publications

SMCSU is elected each spring as 13 councillors and funds the college's clubs, running the Michaelmas Celebration, Christmas Market, Formal, and clubs fair. The college also carries an unusually deep publication set for its size: The Mike, a bi-weekly newspaper founded in 1947, plus Mnvera, Windrose, Foolscap, and Saeculum.

Kelly Library

The John M. Kelly Library at 113 St. Joseph Street holds humanities and social-science collections strongest in Catholic theology, the Middle Ages, Celtic languages, book history, and Irish history, plus Special Collections archives of Marshall McLuhan, Sheila Watson, and G.K. Chesterton. It houses the Writing and Research Help Centre and the Math and Computer Science Success Centres in Room 105.

Downtown Toronto fit

The college reports roughly 35% international students from 168 countries and regions. Compare residence or commute, meal-plan structure, late-evening travel, access to St. George classes, and whether the College's historic campus and community scale fit your priorities.

Questions about St. Michael's

University of St. Michael's College applicants need to distinguish U of T Faculty of Arts & Science admission from college membership, program selection from college preference, undergraduate U of T degrees from graduate theology, and current residence costs from future-cycle guarantees. This guide keeps the federated entity relationship, application process, four sponsored programs, residence, awards, student life, and U of T career routes on one canonical, official-source-backed page.

What is the University of St. Michael's College?

The University of St. Michael's College is an independent Catholic university, founded in 1852 by the Basilian Fathers, that is federated with the University of Toronto. At the undergraduate level, St. Michael's College is one of the seven colleges serving U of T Faculty of Arts & Science students and one of the three federated colleges alongside Victoria and Trinity.

Is St. Michael's College part of the University of Toronto?

Yes. St. Michael's is one of U of T's three federated colleges. Its undergraduates are University of Toronto Faculty of Arts & Science students and receive U of T degrees. St. Michael's separately maintains its own governance, residence, community, sponsored programs, and graduate theology role.

How do I apply to St. Michael's College at U of T?

Apply to a U of T St. George Faculty of Arts & Science admission category and list up to three college preferences on the Arts & Science application. St. Michael's does not require a separate college applicant profile. U of T confirms college membership with the admission offer, and a preferred college is not guaranteed.

Does ranking St. Michael's first actually matter?

For money, yes. Several St. Michael's admission awards—including the Pope Leo XIV, King Charles III, and Melissa Clubbe scholarships—require the applicant to have named St. Michael's as their first-choice college, and the college states that preference is given to SMC-first applicants when admission awards are distributed. Consideration is automatic on admission and recipients are notified in the letter of offer.

Does St. Michael's College require a supplemental application?

No separate college profile is required for St. Michael's membership. A student's chosen U of T admission category may still require a supplemental application—for example, Computer Science or Rotman Commerce—so follow the U of T applicant portal checklist.

Do I have to be Catholic to attend St. Michael's College?

No religious affiliation is stated as an undergraduate membership requirement. St. Michael's is grounded in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, and its mission says it welcomes faculty and students from every background who want to participate in its life.

Trinity programs

Programs and degree ownership

Use Trinity as your college home within U of T Arts & Science

Trinity sponsors distinctive interdisciplinary offerings. But the bachelor's degree and the wider program catalogue belong to U of T. The Faculty of Divinity is its own Trinity route. It has its own admission.

Bachelor’s degree

University of Toronto

Faculty rules govern program entry and completion.

Trinity One

Six streams

Open to first-year Arts & Science students across colleges.

Upper-year sponsors

Three programs

Ethics, Society & Law; International Relations; Immunology.

College sponsorship is not degree ownership

Trinity membership does not automatically admit a student to a limited-enrolment program, and it does not turn every U of T course, internship, award, or service into a Trinity offering.

U of T Faculty of Arts & Science

College members can choose among the Faculty's broad program catalogue. Each program has its own entry and completion rules.

Boundary: U of T awards the bachelor's degree and owns the Faculty catalogue. College membership does not limit your program choice. It does not make every program a Trinity offering.

Trinity One

Six first-year streams use small seminars and interdisciplinary study. The program is open to eligible first-year Arts & Science students from any college.

Boundary: Trinity One needs its own application and offer response. It costs no extra tuition beyond U of T tuition.

Ethics, Society & Law

An upper-year Arts & Science program sponsored by Trinity College.

Boundary: Sponsorship does not change the U of T degree or make all U of T law-related study a Trinity program.

International Relations

An upper-year Arts & Science program sponsored by Trinity College.

Boundary: Students must follow the Faculty calendar and program-entry rules rather than assume membership gives automatic admission.

Immunology

An upper-year Arts & Science program sponsored by Trinity College.

Boundary: It is still a U of T Faculty of Arts & Science degree program. It has its own academic requirements.

Faculty of Divinity

Trinity lists certificates, MTS, MDiv, MA, ThM, PhD, and DMin routes through its Faculty of Divinity and the Toronto School of Theology.

Boundary: Divinity admissions, fees, and awards are separate from undergraduate Arts & Science membership; conjoint degrees involve Trinity and U of T.

Trinity costs and awards

Tuition, scholarships, and bursaries

Use U of T tuition and Trinity college awards

U of T sets Arts & Science tuition. It bills tuition, incidentals and residence through ACORN. Trinity runs college admission awards and bursaries. Pearson and other University awards stay U of T programs.

Ontario tuition

$6,220

2026–27, before incidental and ancillary charges.

Other Canadian

$7,610

2026–27, before incidental and ancillary charges.

International

$66,110

2026–27 general first-year Arts & Science tuition.

Why the official report shows two Ontario amounts

U of T's report keeps a $6,100 Schedule 1 under the earlier freeze assumption. It also keeps a $6,220 Schedule 2 after Ontario allowed a 2% Fall 2026 increase. The Schedule 2 amount is the Fall 2026/Winter 2027 tuition amount.

Ontario Arts & Science bachelor’s tuition

$6,220

Approved Schedule 2 amount for Fall 2026/Winter 2027; incidental and ancillary fees are additional.

Other-Canadian Arts & Science bachelor’s tuition

$7,610

Approved 2026–27 tuition; incidental and ancillary fees are additional.

International Arts & Science bachelor’s tuition

$66,110

This is the approved 2026–27 general Arts & Science amount for a student entering in 2026. Specialized upper-year programs can cost more.

Questions about Trinity

University of Trinity College applicants should treat U of T and Trinity as connected but distinct. U of T admits students to the Faculty of Arts & Science and awards the bachelor's degree. For Fall 2027, Pearson scholarship and Faculty of Divinity dates are confirmed. The general undergraduate profile, residence cycle and final domestic tuition are still pending. Use approved 2026–27 tuition and residence rates for current planning. Treat U of T's 2027–28 international amount as information, not final approval.

8 streams · 2 credits

Up to 250 students, with no more than 25 in each section.

Graduate theology

Emmanuel College

Separate admission, programs, fees, and theological governance.

College membership is not a major

Arts & Science students may study eligible programs. This is true regardless of college affiliation. Victoria sponsorship identifies the college home of a program or enrichment route. It does not transfer ownership of every U of T course, major, internship, or degree to Victoria.

U of T Arts & Science degree

Victoria College members can pursue eligible humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical and mathematical sciences, computer science, and commerce study through the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Boundary: U of T owns admission, most courses, program enrolment, tuition, and the HBA/HBSc/BCom degree. College membership does not make every Arts & Science program Victoria-owned.

Vic One

Eight first-year streams provide two full credits in seminars, with enrolment capped at 250 and sections capped at 25.

Boundary: Applicants from Arts & Science, Architecture, and Music may apply no matter their college choice. Vic One selection is separate from Victoria College membership.

Vic One Hundred

A Victoria College first-year seminar route designed to create a smaller academic community.

Boundary: It is a first-year program. It is not a separate U of T degree or an independent admission category.

Victoria-sponsored upper-year programs

Current offerings include Creativity and Society, Education and Society, Literature and Critical Theory, Material Culture and Semiotics, Renaissance Studies, and Science, Technology and Society.

Boundary: These are Arts & Science program components housed at Victoria. The academic calendar controls enrolment and completion.

Scholars-in-Residence and research centres

Victoria created a four-week interdisciplinary Scholars-in-Residence program and houses six named research centres.

Boundary: These research and enrichment chances are not a paid internship for everyone. They are not a guaranteed placement.

Emmanuel College

Victoria University's graduate multireligious college offers basic, conjoint-certificate, graduate, non-degree, and non-credit theological study.

Boundary: Emmanuel has its own admissions, fees, programs, and theological degree governance. It is not an undergraduate Victoria College route.

Victoria costs and awards

U of T tuition and Victoria awards

Separate faculty tuition from college-administered aid

U of T sets Arts & Science tuition. Victoria College administers its own scholarships and bursaries, and U of T also offers central awards. Every amount below retains that ownership and cycle label.

Ontario Arts & Science tuition

$6,220

U of T Schedule 2 for 2026–27. This is tuition only, before Victoria/U of T incidental and ancillary charges.

Non-Ontario Canadian Arts & Science tuition

$7,610

U of T Schedule 2 for 2026–27; tuition only.

International Arts & Science, entering 2026

$66,110

U of T 2026–27 tuition report; tuition only and not a Victoria College-set price.

International Arts & Science, entering 2027

$68,750

This is published as 2027–28 information in U of T's current tuition report. Incidental fees and UHIP stay separate.

Domestic Fall 2027 Arts & Science tuition

Pending

The report talks about a future provincial framework. But it does not publish an approved 2027–28 domestic Arts & Science schedule.

Emmanuel College current public webpage

$602 domestic / $3,018 international per course

Latest public amounts are labelled 2025–26. Emmanuel's 2026–27 and 2027–28 public fee values remain pending.

The tuition report has two schedules

Schedule 1 retains the earlier $6,100 Ontario freeze basis. Schedule 2 publishes $6,220 and states it will apply for Fall 2026 and Winter 2027. This guide uses Schedule 2 and preserves the official discrepancy.

Scholarships and financial aid

Victoria admission scholarships

Usually $3,000–$5,000; some up to $20,000

Victoria reports more than 100 awards and over $500,000 each year. Outstanding secondary students must pick Vic as their first-choice college.

Mid-90s automatic consideration

Consideration, not a guaranteed award

Victoria says applicants with a mid-90s average are considered automatically. But it clearly warns that this does not guarantee a scholarship.

Opportunity Awards

$5,000 yearly for up to four years

These are renewable need-based awards for identified priority communities. Victoria selects 10–15 recipients each year. Some awards also cover first-year residence.

In-course A-range guarantee

Up to $1,000 once

Victoria College students without a renewable Vic scholarship are guaranteed one in-course award. This is after an eligible first, second, or third year at 3.50+ GPA (grade point average).

2027 National Scholarship

Tuition, incidental, and residence fees up to four years

This central U of T award is closed to new entry. October 30, 2026 is the published student deadline only for applicants who met the October 9 nomination and October 16 admission deadlines.

Victoria careers and co-op

Research, volunteering, and WIL boundaries

Match each experience to Victoria, U of T, or Emmanuel

Victoria runs Vic Reach and funds specific undergraduate research. U of T and Arts & Science own central internships and WIL, while Emmanuel owns its graduate theological placements. College membership alone does not establish co-op.

Vic Reach

A Victoria-run volunteer education-outreach program. It requires at least 50 hours and normally three hours weekly in Toronto classrooms or online sites. It is not transcript credit.

Milne Research Award

Victoria College Life Science students with 3.50+ CGPA may seek multiple awards up to $5,000 for eligible non-credit summer research.

Northrop Frye Centre award

Non-graduating Victoria College students may propose humanities or social-science research with a faculty supervisor for up to $2,000.

Vic Global status

Victoria's current page says Vic Global funding has been paused indefinitely since February 28, 2025. Historical internships must not be presented as a current funded program.

U of T Arts & Science experiential learning

Eligible Victoria members may access faculty opportunities. But U of T or Arts & Science owns those internships, WIL courses, and central services.

No universal Victoria co-op

Victoria College membership, Vic One, research awards, and volunteer placements do not establish co-op. This applies to every Arts & Science program.
