How Canadian universities use predicted and final IB grades

For Fall 2027, Canadian universities can assess you before your final IB results arrive. UBC, McGill and U of T Mississauga publish routes using predicted or anticipated grades. If you're in Ontario, Waterloo and Western direct you to Ontario school requirements. Final results and the conditions in your offer still matter.

Reviewed against each row's official source. Recheck the source before you act, because dates and fees change.

First identify which curriculum the university will assess

An IB course on your transcript doesn't settle your admission route. You might be completing the full International Baccalaureate Diploma alongside an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or OSSD. You might instead be taking individual IB courses within another school curriculum. Tell the university what qualification you'll receive. Its instructions can depend on that answer.

Waterloo directs Ontario IB applicants to its Ontario high school requirements. Its separate document table says that if you're not completing the full IB Diploma, you must meet admission standards from an accredited high school curriculum. Don't read a full-Diploma rule as an alternative route for a partial-IB application.

Western makes the Ontario distinction explicit too. It assesses Ontario IB applicants on the OSSD. Your guidance office converts the predicted and final IB grades into Ontario marks and reports them through OUAC. Start with the Waterloo university hub or Western hub, then check the program's required subjects within your own curriculum.

Toronto asks for the predicted record and the school transcript

U of T Mississauga asks current IB Diploma candidates for predicted results on the 1-7 scale. Its list includes Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and bonus points. You must also confirm that you're completing the full Diploma. A current transcript, including available midyear results, belongs in the file alongside the online self-reported grades form.

UTM gives Certificate or Course candidates a different checklist. It asks for predicted results and confirmation of that route. It also needs the name of the school-leaving qualification you'll receive. That distinction matters if your final award won't be the full IB Diploma. Don't label your course record as a diploma you aren't taking.

The central Toronto page says to follow Join U of T or the Engineering Applicant Portal. Final IB results must come electronically from the IBO. UTM adds that school-issued final IB results aren't official. Use the Toronto deadline guide to organize the relevant dates, while keeping UTM's document instructions attached to its campus.

UBC separates Canadian and international school documents

UBC's Canadian high school section says its admissions office will contact your IB coordinator for anticipated diploma results. The international high school section instead asks for the anticipated-grade form and interim school transcripts. If your school keeps predictions confidential, the counsellor or coordinator can send them directly. Ask your coordinator which route fits your school before duplicating a submission.

Both sections explain how to arrange official final results electronically from IB. Their document dates differ. The page also separates people still in high school from people who have already graduated. Keep those headings with any date you copy. The listed month-and-day dates give no year, so they aren't presented here as confirmed Fall 2027 deadlines.

Final results can cause a review of your offer. UBC names a total drop of four points or more and several subject-level changes. Those include a course drop of three points or more, a score of two or lower, or final Math or English below four. Failure to complete the Diploma is another trigger. A trigger means re-evaluation; it isn't a published automatic withdrawal rule.

McGill reads predictions with your school record

McGill says it considers the high school transcript and predicted IB results. If you've already completed the Diploma, it uses the final results. Its published typical program ranges are out of 42. They are guidance, and the page warns that they don't necessarily describe the grades needed for upcoming admission. Don't turn one typical range into a confirmed Fall 2027 cutoff.

Check your math course as closely as your points. McGill's general rule accepts Analysis and Approaches at Higher or Standard Level, or Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level. It excludes Standard Level Applications and Interpretation as a math prerequisite, though that course is acceptable where math isn't required. Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, including Human Nutrition, is an explicit exception: its programs accept SL Math AI. Follow the specific faculty row.

McGill expects admitted applicants to maintain their academic performance through completion. Keep working after a predicted-grade offer and read your own conditions. Use the McGill university hub for the degree context. Its application deadline guide can help you separate the application from the supporting documents.

Western explains what changes after a conditional offer

Western says it can calculate an admission average using predicted results before you graduate. It may then make a conditional offer. The offer letter and portal explain what you must complete. Western checks the official final documents against those conditions after graduation. A strong prediction isn't a reason to stop checking your final subject results.

For Ontario IB applicants, the school-reported OSSD route remains the key distinction. Western says the guidance office converts both predicted and final IB scores and submits the converted marks through OUAC. It doesn't publish a numerical percentage scale in that instruction. Ask your guidance office how your record is reported rather than importing a table from another university.

Western also requests final IB grades directly from the IBO. Keep admission review and transfer credit as separate questions when you contact the university. Ask what it needs to complete your offer and what it needs to assess credit. The Western application deadline guide provides the relevant calendar links for your application plan.

Waterloo can review work in progress without settling final conditions

Waterloo's IB document table asks for your high school transcript and predicted IB scores as soon as they are available. Its admissions FAQ says midterm or predicted Grade 12 marks can support a conditional offer. The offer then lists the final grades you must achieve. Those two stages explain why you can apply while some results are unfinished.

Ontario IB applicants follow Ontario requirements. Waterloo says Engineering and Mathematics applicants can identify their IB courses on the Admission Information Form. If you receive an offer, official IB results sent directly by the IBO are needed for potential transfer credits. That credit statement doesn't replace the Ontario marks required for admission.

Read the exact degree requirements before deciding which HL or SL course will qualify. Higher Level and Standard Level describe your IB subjects, but the program still decides which it accepts. Keep the Waterloo application deadline guide beside that course list. Complete any required form according to Waterloo's own instructions and track its deadline separately.

Queen's labels bonus points and subject floors explicitly

Queen's full-Diploma page requires six subjects, with three at Higher Level. Its stated minimum total is 28 excluding bonus points, and no subject can be below three. Keep the exclusion beside the total. A score written with bonus points included isn't the same figure, so copying only the number can mislead your planning.

The program rows add other rules. Smith Commerce requires English and Mathematics with a minimum of five in each, labelled predicted/final. It doesn't accept Standard Level Applications and Interpretations as the math prerequisite. It also requires a supplementary application. Check all of that row rather than relying on the general Diploma minimum.

A general minimum and a subject floor don't tell you your admission probability. They tell you which published requirements to examine. Use the Queen's program chapter to compare the degree you want. When you receive an offer, save its final conditions and the instructions for official documents. Your own offer is the document to follow.

Keep conversions, offer conditions and credit in separate notes

Make one record for each university. Note which school transcript it needs and who sends predictions. Add the final-result sender and your personal offer conditions. If a source uses points out of 42, keep that basis. If it excludes bonus points, write that down. Don't create one percentage conversion for every Canadian university.

Alberta's page doesn't publish a percentage conversion, so ask Alberta directly. Western's Ontario instructions instead tell you to use the converted marks supplied by your guidance office.

Transfer credit is another task. UTM, for example, bases its stated IB credit policy on final HL results and doesn't award IB credit for SL exams. That doesn't decide your admission result. Before choosing courses after an offer, ask how any credit fits your degree. Check the Toronto financial-aid chapter separately for funding information.
