Course requirements

McMaster asks Ontario students for a high school diploma plus six Grade 12 U or M courses. For the Life Sciences Gateway, those must include English (ENG4U) and Biology (SBI4U). You also need one of Advanced Functions (MHF4U) or Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), and one more course from MHF4U, MCV4U, Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U).

Calculus isn't required to apply, but McMaster says students without it must take calculus in first year. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The mid 90s anticipated range

McMaster's requirements tool lists an anticipated admission range in the mid 90s for the Life Sciences Gateway, with a target enrolment of 1,000. An anticipated range is McMaster's estimate for this cycle, not a guaranteed cut-off.

From the IB

IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma students need six subjects, three at Higher Level, including English, Biology, a Mathematics course and one of Chemistry, Physics or a math. McMaster's anticipated range for IB students is a minimum of 38 to 40 points, counting the TOK and EE bonus points, subject to change.

Applications and Interpretations SL can be your first math course but doesn't satisfy the fourth requirement. Students with that course must take calculus in first year. Higher Level courses with a final score of 5 or more can earn up to 18 units of advanced credit for Diploma students.

How the Gateway year works

You spend one year in the Life Sciences Gateway before moving into a program or major. At the end of first year you rank the programs you want. Entry to each second-year program depends on the courses you took and a first-year minimum average.

Second-year options include Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Astronomy, and Honours Life Sciences.

First year is up to you, but McMaster says Life Sciences students usually take BIOLOGY 1A03 and 1M03, CHEM 1A03 and 1AA3, Calculus for the Life Sciences (MATH 1LS3), PHYSICS 1A03, PSYCH 1X03 and ENVIRSC 1C03, plus 6 units of electives.

Getting into Honours Life Sciences

Honours Life Sciences is a second-year program, and McMaster lists it with unlimited enrolment. You need to finish any Level 1 program with a GPA of at least 5.0, including BIOLOGY 1A03 and 1M03, CHEM 1A03, one of MATH 1A03 or 1LS3, and one of PHYSICS 1A03 or 1C03.

You also need one course from EARTHSC 1G03, ENVIRSC 1C03, PSYCH 1XX3 or PSYCH 1FF3, and two more from the Science 1 course list. Second-year courses include research methods, science communication, a living systems lab, genetics, cell biology and the fundamentals of neuroscience.

The program focuses on human health, aging and disease, with community-based projects and peer mentoring tied to courses. Its specializations include Health Evidence and Science Engagement, and Origins of Disease.

How to apply

Apply through OUAC with program code MLS by April 1, 2027. Ontario high school grades go to McMaster from OUAC. There's no supplementary application.

Current Ontario students with at least 3 final or 6 midterm Grade 12 U or M courses are considered on a rolling basis, with offers usually from February to March. McMaster reviews you again when second-semester midterms arrive, makes rolling offers until May 15, and sends final decisions by May 27.

Applicants from other provinces should send first-semester grades and a full-year course list by February 15. McMaster normally decides 4 to 5 weeks after all their documents are received.

Co-op from third year

Life Sciences is one of McMaster's Science co-op programs. You apply in second year and start in third year, then alternate study terms with paid work terms. You graduate with 12 to 16 months of work experience.

To apply you need at least a 5.0 GPA, and McMaster says co-op admission is typically much higher. You must also complete SCIENCE 2C00, Skills for Career Success in Science. The current application window closes January 8, 2027. Co-op costs a $1,200 one-time fee, a $300 annual fee in two years and $690 for each of four work terms.

Outside co-op, the Faculty of Science offers applied science placement courses, research practicum courses and science internships, and its Office of Undergraduate Research supports student projects.

Research and careers

McMaster calls its Office of Undergraduate Research the first of its kind in Canada. It supports student-led and faculty-led research in every discipline, and the Faculty of Science says it wants every undergraduate to have the chance at an immersive research experience.

McMaster says students who start in the Life Sciences Gateway have gone on to careers in medicine, immunology, genetics, biostatistics, microbiology, epidemiology, pharmacology, toxicology, forensics and policy analysis. Honours Life Sciences graduates list regulatory affairs, health care, nutritional science, science communication, science consulting and public health.

Many of those careers need further study, such as medical school or a graduate degree. Pick first-year courses that keep the second-year programs you want open.

For parents

The Gateway suits students who like science but haven't picked a field. Your child doesn't commit until the end of first year, but the second-year program they get depends on first-year marks.

The mid 90s range is high for a program with no supplement, so the Grade 12 average does all the work. Chemistry and Physics are optional, but some second-year programs need first-year courses in them.
