The optional supplementary application

The written supplement is optional but highly recommended. DeGroote says it helps students with marks at the lower end of the range, and it is used to award scholarships of up to $10,000. Skipping it won't hurt your application.

It has 7 short questions about your activities and 3 long answers. You must write it yourself; generative AI is not allowed. DeGroote's Apply page lists April 30, 2027 for Fall 2027. The supplement page still showed the last cycle (opened December 1, 2025, due April 17, 2026) when we checked, so watch for an update.

Internship rather than co-op

DeGroote's work program is an internship, which its menu labels as co-op. You apply for Commerce with Internship at the end of Level II. The paid work term is 12 or 16 months, starting between May and September after third year. It adds one year to the degree.

Students who choose this route must take COMMERCE 2IN0, a career development course. DeGroote's Career and Professional Development team helps you find a placement.

First year and areas of focus

Business I covers accounting, organizational behaviour, data analytics, marketing, economics and calculus, plus non-Commerce electives. After two years you can choose an area of focus such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing or Information Systems, or stay broad.

Entrance awards for Commerce

McMaster gives some entrance awards automatically, based on your final admission average. For September 2027, the McMaster University Entrance Award pays $3,000 to DeGroote students with an average of 92% or higher. McMaster says averages are not rounded.

DeGroote adds its own automatic awards for domestic high school students. The Deans Entrance Award is $1,500 for an average of 90% to 91.99%. The Award of Excellence is $2,000 for 92% or higher. Offers are projected from your average when you apply and depend on your final grades from OUAC.

The Access Award is by application. It offers up to $20,000 a year, renewable for up to four years, to qualified students from equity-deserving groups in the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Apply on AwardSpring by February 19, 2027.

Preparing your supplement answers

DeGroote says it looks for motivated students who show achievement, leadership and a passion for business, whatever their marks. It suggests you reflect on three themes before you start: leadership, resilience and motivation.

Examples from its list include what you learned from leading a team, how you bounced back from a failure, and how you keep others motivated. You log in with your MacID through the Slate platform. You can save your work and come back to it.

Your answers must be yours alone. DeGroote says posting answers online, working with others on them, or using generative AI can get you removed from the applicant pool. If you need an accommodation, email buscom@mcmaster.ca.

Transferring into Commerce

Current McMaster students can apply to move into Business I or into Commerce Level II or III. Seats are limited. DeGroote ranks students on completed courses and cumulative GPA at the end of the winter term, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee a spot.

Students from another university need at least an 80% (A-) cumulative GPA to be considered for Business I or Level II. Graduates of a two-year college program also need 80%. Graduates of Mohawk's Business Administration Advanced Diploma with a weighted GPA of 77% can apply through a pathway that grants 60 credits. They still need MHF4U and MCV4U or equivalents.

McMaster Continuing Education also offers a one-year Diploma in Business Administration. Students who finish it with a cumulative GPA of at least 9.0 (B+), and who have MHF4U and MCV4U, may be considered for Commerce with up to 24 units of transfer credit.

For parents

Commerce decides mainly on six Grade 12 courses, with both MHF4U and MCV4U required. The supplement is optional but can help a borderline average and opens scholarships.
