University of Manitoba nursing admission requirements: a pre-nursing year first, then a 28-month BN ranked by AGPA

You can't start the University of Manitoba's nursing degree from high school. It is an advanced entry program. First you do a year of university, often in University 1. You take set courses like anatomy and physiology. Then you apply to nursing. Spots go by your AGPA, a grade point score. The nursing part takes 28 months.

Direct entry or a pre-nursing year?

The Bachelor of Nursing is an advanced entry program. UM says you must finish at least one year of university study, with set required and recommended courses, before you can be considered. That is true even if you already have a degree.

If you have not been to university, UM points you to a direct entry program such as University 1. You use that year to take the nursing prerequisites as electives. The nursing courses themselves are only open to students admitted to the program. UM describes the length as 28 months plus the qualifying year.

Getting into University 1 from high school

For Manitoba students, University 1 needs a 70% average over English 40S, Mathematics 40S and two academic 40S courses, with no mark under 60%. For Ontario students, UM's equivalency page lists ENG4U, a 4U math and two academic 4U or 4M courses.

Biology and chemistry are not required for University 1, but you will take university anatomy, physiology and science electives. Grade 12 Biology and Chemistry help you prepare. Plan with our course planner and check your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

Required courses for nursing

You need BIOL 1410 Anatomy, BIOL 1412 Physiology (or BIOL 2410 and 2420), and MBIO 3010 Microbiology. You also need 9 credit hours of science electives and 12 of social science or humanities. Each course needs a C or better at the 1000 level or higher.

You must also meet UM's Written English and Mathematics requirements with university courses. The written English course needs real essays: at least three papers of 3 to 5 pages, or two of 6 to 8 pages, with 3,000 words in total. Non-nursing courses must be from the last 10 years.

How the AGPA works

You need an Adjusted Grade Point Average of at least 2.5 to be eligible. UM ranks applicants by AGPA. It is 30% your core course average and 70% your average over your most recent 45 credit hours. If you have fewer than 45, it uses all of them, with at least 30.

Recent cut-offs were 3.395 for Winter 2026, 3.3 for Summer 2026 and 3.3423 for Fall 2026. Those are well above the 2.5 floor. After spots fill, UM keeps a short wait list ranked by AGPA. It does not carry over, so you reapply if you miss out. There is no limit on how many times you can apply.

Supplementary and non-academic steps

There is no essay or Casper test in the general category. You are selected on AGPA. Applicants in the Canadian Indigenous category must give proof of Indigenous ancestry.

If you are admitted, your offer is conditional on non-academic requirements, such as documents for clinical work. Start these early. All applicants must also review UM's requisite skills and abilities policy. First Nations, Métis and Inuit students can also look at Mahkwa omushki kiim, a pathway that gives academic and personal support to prepare for the Bachelor of Nursing.

Dates

UM's current nursing page covers the 2026-2027 cycle. Canadian applicants apply by April 1, 2026 for Fall 2026, August 1, 2026 for Winter 2027, and December 1, 2026 for Summer 2027. The page does not yet list Fall 2027. Check with UM for the Fall 2027 date before you plan around it.

For University 1, the direct entry page lists August 1 for Fall 2026 with an early date of December 1, 2025. UM's awards page lists March 1, 2026 as the date to apply for entrance scholarship consideration for Fall 2026. Those dates differ, so apply early if you want scholarships. Fall 2027 dates are not posted yet.

Program structure and clinical work

Nursing years include courses like Health and Illness: The Older Client, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Assessment, Mental Health and Illness, and Law and Ethics in Nursing Practice. The program ends with NURS 4580, a 9 credit hour senior practicum.

UM offers about 400 nursing spaces a year across its BN and other pathways, with about 120 students in each of three intakes. If you are accepted for an intake, you must start that term. UM can't defer you.

Co-op

UM's nursing page lists clinical practice and a senior practicum, not a co-op stream. It also mentions a Summer Research Internship Program for students.

Tuition for 2026-27

UM charges by credit hour. In 2026-2027, nursing courses cost $177.76 per credit hour for Canadian students and $723.22 for international students. By our math, 30 credit hours of nursing courses would be about $5,333 in tuition. That is our estimate, not a UM figure.

Six clinical courses also carry a $425.74 Nursing Clinical and Simulation Fee each. UM's own estimate of yearly costs for nursing is $8,800 for Canadian students and $26,600 for international students. In your University 1 year, each course is charged at its own faculty's rate.

Scholarships and residence

New students receive over $3.5 million in entrance scholarships each year. Most are based on the last one or two years of high school, so they are awarded in your University 1 year. The nursing page says there are 50 or more bursaries and scholarships just for nursing students.

Mary Speechly Hall and Pembina Hall are first-year residences. UM posts a calculator for 2026-2027 residence rates, meal plans and fees.

For parents

This is a plan of at least a year plus 28 months. The minimum AGPA is 2.5, but recent cut-offs were about 3.3 to 3.4. Help your child pick a first-year program they would enjoy finishing if nursing takes longer.

Budget for the qualifying year as well as the 28 months of nursing. Also read the University of Manitoba admissions overview.
