What the BLA is

Landscape architects design and look after outdoor spaces, from parks and neighbourhoods to regional landscapes. Guelph's calendar describes the field as the art and science of designing and conserving land and water for human use and enjoyment. The program is run by the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development.

Guelph says its BLA is the only one in Canada accredited by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA), and that it is recognized by the American Society of Landscape Architects. The calendar says graduates of accredited programs can apply to provincial and state professional associations after the required years of practice and exams.

Course requirements

Ontario students need the OSSD and at least six 4U or 4M courses. English (ENG4U) is the only required course. Guelph strongly recommends design arts, technical drawing and science courses.

Those recommendations match the program. First year includes a design and communication studio and a biology course called Humans in the Natural World. Later years add planting design, site engineering and landscape construction. A visual arts or technological design course in Grade 12 can help you test your interest. Grades and the cut-off

Guelph says admission to the BLA is based on a combination of grades and the BIF. Unlike most Guelph programs, the BLA requirements page does not list an estimated cut-off range. We could not find a published average for the BLA on Guelph's admission pages, so we don't give one here.

Guelph calculates your admission average from your top six completed 4U or 4M courses, including required subjects. Co-op courses don't count. Guelph does not publish an acceptance rate for the BLA. Check your average with our Top 6 average calculator, and see our Guelph acceptance rate page for what Guelph publishes.

The Background Information Form

Every BLA applicant must submit the BLA Background Information Form to complete the application. Guelph lists it as a mandatory supplementary form, due February 1, 2027. After you apply, Guelph lists your required documents in the My Documents section of your WebAdvisor account.

Guelph does not post the BLA form's questions on its public admission pages. The sample BIF it links to is for the veterinary (DVM) program, not the BLA. Expect to see the BLA form only after you apply, and leave time before the deadline.

You may also send the optional Student Profile Form, due April 1, 2027. It lets you describe leadership, citizenship and circumstances that affected your grades.

A firm deadline and later offers

The BLA runs on its own calendar. Most Guelph programs ask for OUAC applications by January 15, 2027, but keep accepting them after that date. The BLA works the other way. Its deadline is a little later, February 1, 2027, the same day as the BIF, but it is firm. Guelph's dates page notes that applications to the BLA close on February 1. Don't wait for January 15 to pass and assume you still have time.

Offers for most Guelph programs come out from November to May. Guelph says offers to the BLA are released in March and April instead. If you want to change program choices, Guelph's April 15 date for equal consideration does not apply to the BLA. The deadline to accept an offer through OUAC is June 1, 2027.

What you study

The BLA is an eight-semester Honours program of 20.00 credits. To graduate you need to pass every course in the program and keep a 60.0% cumulative average. Studio courses run through the degree: Introduction to Design and Communication, Foundational Design, Site Design, Urban Design and Landscape Rehabilitation Design. You also take courses in landscape history, site analysis, urban and regional planning, landscape construction and professional practice. Electives can give you breadth, or you can group them in one field, such as environmental studies, studio art or geography.

Guelph expects students to have their own computer. Field trips are required in some courses. The calendar also advises summer work in the landscape industry, ideally two summers in landscape work and one in a professional office.

Internship, not co-op

The BLA has no co-op option. It is not on Guelph's list of programs that offer co-op. Instead, in semester six you choose between electives and the Landscape Architecture Internship, LARC*4620, worth 1.00 credit.

Guelph's program page also mentions design competitions, community projects and dedicated studio space. Careers it lists include landscape architect, community design facilitator, residential garden designer and zoo exhibit designer.

Tuition and scholarships

The BLA has its own tuition rate, higher than Guelph's Arts and Science rate. For Fall 2026, Winter 2027 and Summer 2027, BLA tuition is $4,714.40 a term for Ontario students and $5,898.92 for other Canadians. International students in the 2026 cohort pay $27,201.70 a term.

Compulsory fees add $969.82 in fall and $673.71 in winter. BLA students also pay a $50.00 Landscape Architecture Student Society fee each semester.

For Fall 2027, Canadian citizens and permanent residents get an automatic entrance scholarship of $1,000 with a 90.0% to 94.9% admission average, or $2,000 at 95.0% or more.

For parents

The BLA is a professional design degree, not a general science or arts degree. The two things to watch are the February 1 deadline and the BIF. Missing either can end the application.

Budget for a personal computer, field trips and the higher BLA tuition rate. Because offers come in March and April, your child may hear from other programs first. That is normal for this program.
