Course requirements

Western asks for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and at least six Grade 12 U or M courses, not counting co-op. For Engineering, five are set: ENG4U (English), MHF4U (Advanced Functions), MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors), SCH4U (Chemistry) and SPH4U (Physics).

Western also looks at your completed and in-progress Grade 11 U and M courses. If English isn't your first language, you may need to show English proficiency. Map your courses with our course planner.

Applying from another province or the IB

Western lists the same high 80s to low 90s Engineering range for students at Canadian high schools outside Ontario. Your required courses depend on your province, and Western has a page for each one.

If you study outside Ontario, Western decides on the grades you report yourself. After you apply, a Self-Reported Grade form appears on your Student Center to-do list. If you repeat a course, Western uses your highest grade.

IB (International Baccalaureate) students are assessed on predicted or final IB results first. If those don't meet the requirements, Western looks at your provincial grades next.

The high 80s to low 90s range

Western publishes typical average ranges for last year's incoming class. Engineering's is the high 80s to low 90s. It's an average, so some admitted students were above it and some below.

Western says there are no minimum grades that guarantee admission and that ranges change from year to year. It doesn't publish an Engineering acceptance rate. See our Western acceptance rate page for what Western does publish, and work out your own average on our Top 6 average calculator.

Casper, step by step

Every OUAC applicant to Western Engineering takes Casper in the 2026-27 admission cycle. It's an online, open-response test of how you handle everyday situations, and it takes 90 to 110 minutes.

Register at takecasper.com for Canada Casper 1 (CSP-10200), using your OUAC student number and government photo ID. Pick a date Western has approved, at least three days ahead. Choose the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Engineering, to receive your score.

Results reach Western about three weeks after your test, and you can't get an offer until they do. Offers can start in November, so test early. You can only take Casper once per cycle, and Western's last Engineering test date is March 2, 2027.

You need a desktop or laptop. Phones and tablets aren't supported. Read our Casper test guide for how the questions work.

The common first year and choosing a program

Every Western Engineering student takes the same first-year courses. Western builds your timetable for you. In March of first year you rank programs during the Intent to Register period, then move into one of seven programs: Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Integrated, Mechanical, Mechatronic Systems or Software Engineering.

You need to finish all of first year with no outstanding credits. Most programs give first consideration to students with at least 60% in their listed first-year courses. Mechatronics asks for 70%. Software Engineering needs 70% in ES 1036. The Biomedical option needs a 70% first-year average and the Artificial Intelligence Systems option needs 75%. Meeting a minimum doesn't guarantee a program.

Western publishes how ranking turned out. In 2026, 73.4% of students got their first choice and 92% got one of their top three. In 2025 the figures were 69.7% and 89%.

Dual degrees: Ivey, Law and Biomedical

Western Engineering offers combined degrees that finish faster than doing both separately. You can pair your Bachelor of Engineering Science with an Ivey Honors Business Administration (HBA) in five years, or with a Western Law JD in six years.

You can also add Biomedical Engineering or Artificial Intelligence Systems to Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering. For the Ivey route, read our Ivey AEO guide.

Co-op

Co-op is optional. A summer co-op runs four months, May to August, and you can start after first year. Long co-ops run 8 to 16 months. From fall 2026, you need at least three co-op work terms before graduation for the "With Co-op" degree.

Western Engineering charges a $125 application fee each year you apply, and $550 per work term once you've secured a job.

Tuition and entrance scholarships

Western's 2026-27 fee schedule lists Year 1 Engineering tuition at $12,539 for Ontario residents, or $14,665.46 with ancillary and student fees. International students pay $64,310 in tuition. The schedule is marked draft, and 2027-28 fees aren't posted yet.

Western's automatic admission scholarships need no application. A final admission average of 92% or more earns a $3,500 Western Scholarship of Distinction, with $2,500 in first year. An average of 90% to 91.9% earns $2,500. The top averages compete for 250 Western Scholarships of Excellence worth $8,000. Western guarantees consideration if your application and documents are in by March 1.

For parents

Casper is the step families miss most. Without a score, Western won't send an offer, so book a test date as soon as the OUAC application is in.

The common first year means your child doesn't pick a discipline at 17. Most students get their first choice, but Western's own numbers show about a quarter don't.
