Course requirements

Laurier's BMus page lists English at 60% as the only course requirement for Ontario high school students. There's no required math, science or music course. You still need a strong overall average, since Laurier lists an admission range in the mid 70s.

Students from other provinces can check Laurier's course equivalents chart. Plan your Grade 12 year in our course planner.

The average you need

Laurier lists the average admission range for the BMus as the mid 70s. This is the published range, not a promise. Laurier does not publish an acceptance rate or the number of music students it admits.

Your audition matters a lot. A successful audition gets you a recommendation from the Faculty of Music, but Laurier says you still must meet all of the university's academic requirements to get an offer. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

The audition and interview

You audition into either classical or contemporary commercial lessons. Laurier's audition areas run from bassoon and cello to electric guitar, drum set, guzheng and voice. If your instrument isn't listed, Laurier asks you to email musicauditions@wlu.ca.

Repertoire depends on your instrument and style. Many classical lists let you swap an etude for an original composition or a contemporary piece. Contemporary auditions can include an original composition, and pre-recorded or live accompaniment is allowed for many instruments. You may also be asked to sight-read or show other musicianship skills.

The interview is with a faculty member. It covers your musical background, interests and goals, and why you want a Bachelor of Music. In person, you can bring your own accompanist or ask for a Laurier coach-accompanist at no extra cost.

On audition day, Laurier suggests arriving 30 minutes early to sign in and warm up. Bring one copy of your music for the panel, plus a copy for the accompanist if you use one. Current music students act as audition assistants and give you a tour of the music building.

Laurier names one reference who can speak to your musical abilities. Laurier contacts them directly with questions. The optional portfolio is one link, such as a video or a PDF of composed music. Laurier says leaving it out won't hurt your application.

  • Laurier's pages don't list an entrance theory test.
  • If your audition isn't successful, Laurier says you'll automatically be considered for another Laurier program.

What first year looks like

First-year core courses include studio lessons and studio class, ensemble, MUST102 Ear Training Lab 1, MUAC101 Theory 1, MUAC102 Theory 2, and either MUST103 Keyboard Foundations or MUST104 Keyboard Harmony. You also take MUST100 Foundational Vocal Techniques and three electives.

Non-piano majors with RCM Level 3 piano or a contemporary equivalent may be exempt from Keyboard Foundations. Elective samples include MUST110 Introduction to Digital Music Production and MUCP102 Introduction to Composition. Later, you can pick up to two of 10 specializations, such as Composition, Music Education, Performance or Afrodiasporic Music.

Upper-year samples include MUCP342 Songwriting, MUST492 Instrumental Conducting, MUCE380 Pedagogy and Integrated Wellness and MUAC393 Hip-Hop and Spoken Word Practices. The mix shows how far the program reaches past classical training.

Co-op and placements

Laurier's BMus page doesn't list a co-op option. It points to other ways to get experience: community music placements in third year, a for-credit Stratford Festival course for eligible students, partnerships with Metalworks Institute and the Suzuki String School of Guelph, and the Navigating the Music Industry Ecosystem certificate.

The Metalworks pathway lets you earn a Laurier BMus and an Audio Production and Engineering Diploma in as little as four years.

Tuition for 2026-27

Laurier's BMus page lists 2026/27 tuition of $6,180 for domestic students and $36,624 for international students. Student fees add $2,133 for domestic students and $3,082 for international students. Laurier also estimates $1,500 for textbooks.

Our estimate, not a Laurier figure: tuition plus student fees comes to about $8,313 for a domestic student before books, residence and food. Laurier says its fees are based on 2026/27 rates and may rise.

Scholarships

Laurier's automatic entrance scholarships use your admission average as of July 2027. Domestic students get $2,500 at 85.0% to 89.9%, $3,000 at 90.0% to 94.9% and $4,000 at 95.0% and up. No application is needed.

You're also automatically considered for a Faculty of Music audition scholarship. Laurier names the $5,000 Ken Murray Entrance Scholarship and the $2,000 Martens-Falk Voice Scholarship, and says it awards about $100,000 to incoming music students each year. Find more in our scholarship finder.

Other Laurier music options

The Bachelor of Music Therapy (BMT) doesn't admit from high school. You start in the BMus, finish two years including required music and psychology courses, then apply for years 3 and 4. That step needs its own audition, with self-accompaniment and improvisation, and an interview. BMT students do a 1,000-hour internship in fourth year.

You can also add a Teaching Minor or a Management Minor when you apply on OUAC. The Teaching Minor gives a direct path to Laurier's Bachelor of Education.

For parents

Laurier's grade bar for music is a mid 70s range with English at 60%. Contemporary players are welcome, so a teen who plays guitar or drum set has a real path.
