Grades-Only entry, with a wider math choice than many technology degrees
Graphic Communications Management requires an OSSD, six Grade 12 U or M courses and a minimum overall average of 70%. The named English prerequisite is Grade 12 U English, with ENG4U or EAE4U preferred. The accepted mathematics choices are MCF3M, MCR3U, MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U. English and the selected mathematics course each need at least 65% on the admissions page. That Grade 11 math option is useful if you enjoy production technology but haven't planned a calculus-heavy high-school timetable. It doesn't remove the separate requirement to complete six eligible Grade 12 courses.
The 2026-27 calendar describes prerequisite grades as normally 65 to 70%, determined by competition. The admissions page specifies 65% in each prerequisite. Read both statements: 65% is the published course floor, while the calendar warns that selection can require higher grades. Accounting BAT4M and Communication Technology TGJ4M are recommended preparation, rather than extra mandatory prerequisites. Applicants educated outside Ontario need TMU's requirements for their own school system.

What GCM produces: a technology degree with business responsibilities
GCM combines visual production with the decisions that make production workable. The official curriculum assigns about half its content to business and management. The other side examines materials, equipment and workflows for printing and graphic communications. That combination explains why the credential is a Bachelor of Technology rather than a Graphic Design BDes. You're learning not only what a design looks like, but how it reaches a client, becomes a printable file and moves through a production process.
This distinction should shape your shortlist. If the part you enjoy is testing a package, arranging a production job or finding a more reliable workflow, GCM offers subjects directly connected to those interests. If you mainly want an open-ended studio-art degree, compare the amount of required business coursework before choosing it. TMU's calendar explicitly cautions that the program doesn't produce instant managers: graduates still need workplace experience before taking managerial responsibility. The degree title should not be read as a promise of a management position immediately after graduation.

First year connects layout, production and marketing
The first semester lists GCM 110, GCM 120 and GCM 130, introducing graphic communications, production processes and design/layout. MKT 100 adds marketing. In the second semester, GCM 111 addresses technologies and GCM 121 continues the process sequence. CMN 279 introduces professional communication, GMS 200 introduces global management and SSH 105 covers critical thinking. Liberal studies sit alongside the technical and business work.
For a course comparison, group these subjects by the work they ask you to learn: visual organization, production knowledge and communication with people who commission or manage that work. A high-school communication-technology class can help you explore the field, but it's not a substitute for meeting English and mathematics requirements. The first-year sequence also means GCM isn't simply a software-training course. It places design/layout beside marketing and production from the beginning. The examples here come from the published 2026-27 calendar; use the calendar for your entry cohort when selecting actual courses.

Packaging and colour become technical questions in later years
Second year includes GCM 230 typography, GCM 240 material science for print and GCM 250 binding/finishing. GCM 210 introduces packaging, while GCM 260 examines digital premedia workflows. These subjects let you compare GCM with a design program more precisely: the degree asks how a design behaves as a manufactured or distributed product, not only how it appears on a screen.
Third-year examples include GCM 350 estimating, GCM 360 colour management, GCM 375 project management and GCM 372 operations/process management. GCM 362 introduces UX/UI design. A student interested in digital interfaces therefore has relevant coursework, but shouldn't mistake that one course for a complete computing degree. Think about the production problem you most want to understand. Colour consistency, material choice, cost and delivery schedules lead toward different elective choices. Ask the school how current lab assignments and production equipment connect with those interests. The calendar supplies the sequence; it doesn't guarantee that every elective runs in every term.

Four optional concentrations, not four admission portfolios
TMU lists Digital Graphic Output, Leadership, Packaging and Publishing as optional concentrations. The calendar places concentration selection from the fifth semester and sets their required and elective combinations. These are structured choices within the BTech, rather than separate high-school application routes. A concentration must be declared before applying to graduate, and its courses cannot also satisfy a minor.
Packaging includes package prototyping and flexographic production among its named courses. Leadership uses accounting, entrepreneurship and finance requirements. Digital Graphic Output includes areas such as sign/display graphics and ebook production. You don't need to present a finished commercial package to gain Grades-Only admission. Instead, use the concentration lists to judge whether the later coursework supports the type of production you want to learn. Compare required subjects, not just concentration names. A publishing interest could involve production workflow and business decisions that differ substantially from studying creative writing or journalism. Keep the breadth of the underlying GCM degree in mind even when one concentration attracts you most.

The required paid internship sits between third and fourth year
The program page identifies a paid industry internship between the third and fourth years. The calendar describes it as mandatory work as an industry employee and lists WKT 608 in the later curriculum. This is a specific placement component, not a claim that GCM has the same alternating co-op schedule as another TMU degree.
Before accepting an offer, ask the school how internship approval, employer recruitment and preparation work for the cohort you would join. The published paid label helps distinguish this experience from unpaid creative volunteering, but it doesn't establish a salary, employer or job guarantee. A useful program comparison asks how the internship relates to the production and business courses you have already completed. In fourth year, the calendar offers a business-plan or thesis choice and includes workflow automation and asset-management subjects. That lets you weigh whether you want to finish with a business proposal or a research project connected to graphic communications.

February application timing and a historical grade range
The official application page now has a Fall 2027 heading over its February 1 guaranteed-consideration date. Apply by that date for equal consideration of a complete application or amendment. GCM is Grades-Only, so there is no separate creative submission listed for this admission route. Most Grades-Only decisions are released from February through the end of May; check the ChooseTMU portal for the actual decision and outstanding documents.
The program's displayed 70 to 75% range describes averages required in previous years. It is neither a promised Fall 2027 cut-off nor a portfolio score. TMU says the needed average changes with demand and spaces. If your math prerequisite is a Grade 11 course, check that it is recorded accurately as well as confirming the six Grade 12 courses. That is a GCM-specific eligibility check a generic Top 6 total can overlook. The school decides equivalency for transfer, international and other curricula; don't translate Ontario course codes into an unsupported equivalent yourself.

Costs and the questions to bring to a GCM visit
For tuition, awards and living-cost planning, use the TMU overview and the linked official 2026-27 fee schedules. Fall 2027 applicants need their own future-year bill. Ask separately about production materials, printing and internship-related expenses rather than assuming a university-wide tuition range includes every GCM project cost.
At a school visit, ask to see how a design file becomes a physical output and how students measure the result. Ask how a packaging or publishing concentration changes later assignments, and how a thesis differs from the fourth-year business-plan option. These questions come directly from the degree's unusual combination of production technology and management. They will give you more useful evidence than asking whether GCM is simply 'creative' or 'business'. Compare it with TMU Creative Industries for sector management, or an art-school design degree for a different studio emphasis. Choose the work you want to study repeatedly, including its less glamorous estimating and process tasks.
