Direct entry or later entry?

TMU offers direct entry. A student in Grade 12 applies on OUAC to the four year Bachelor of Social Work, code SSE, and starts social work courses in first year. You do not need a first degree or a college diploma.

TMU also runs two later entry routes for people who already have a diploma or degree. They are covered below. One rule matters for college students: if you hold a Social Service Worker or Human Service Counsellor diploma, TMU will not consider you for the four year program. You apply to the advanced standing route instead.

Course requirements

You need six Grade 12 U or M courses. English is the only named course. TMU prefers ENG4U or EAE4U and needs at least 70% in it. There is no math or science requirement.

That gives you room to pick courses you enjoy and do well in, such as sociology, history, law or a second language. Plan your Grade 12 timetable with our course planner.

The average you need

The minimum to be considered is a 70% average of your best six Grade 12 U or M courses. TMU says the competitive range is usually 80% to 85%. The range can change each year, based on how many people apply and how strong they are.

TMU does not publish an acceptance rate for social work. Aim for the low to mid 80s to be safe. Check where you stand with our Top 6 average calculator.

No supplementary application for high school students

TMU lists the four year program as grades only. That means it decides on your marks. There is no essay, interview or Casper test for the SSE route.

The part time route to third year is different. It is grades plus. Those applicants send two references, a resume, employer letters and a Statement of Intent of 500 to 700 words. For Fall 2027 these are due February 1, 2027, or 10 business days after you apply, whichever is later.

Advanced standing routes

Second year entry (SWT) is for graduates of a Social Service Worker or Human Service Counsellor diploma. You need a 3.0 (B) grade point average and less than two years of paid, full time equivalent, relevant work.

Part time third year entry (SDG) is for people with a humanities or social science degree, or an eligible diploma, plus at least two years of paid relevant work. You must also finish CVSW15, Foundations of Social Work II, with a B or better. Students who enter through these routes get credit for the third year placement.

What you study

First year includes Canadian Political Institutions, Introduction to Psychology, Social Justice and Mental Health, Critical Social Work Foundations and Social Work Theories of Practice. You also take two liberal studies courses.

TMU's school says its teaching is built on anti oppression and critical approaches to practice. The program is accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. Graduates can register with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

Field placements, not co-op

There is no co-op stream. Instead, a placement is mandatory and adds up to 700 hours. In third year you are in an agency two days a week, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, for 336 hours from September to April.

In fourth year you do 364 hours, usually Wednesdays and Thursdays. Some students do a block placement from May to August instead, four to five days a week, or a work study placement if they already work in the sector. Out of country placements need an application.

Is direct entry the right choice?

If you know in Grade 12 that you want to be a social worker, the four year route is the shortest path to a BSW. You take social work courses from first year and start placements in third year.

If you are unsure, a college Social Service Worker diploma followed by advanced standing is another real path. It takes longer overall, but you earn a diploma and work skills on the way. Remember that diploma holders cannot switch back into the four year program, so choose the route on purpose. Compare other schools on our York social work page.

Entrance scholarships

TMU's Fall 2027 entrance scholarships are guaranteed and renewable for Canadian high school students who meet the terms. They are $3,000 a year at 95% or more, $1,500 at 90% to 94.99% and $750 at 86% to 89.99%.

Since the competitive range is 80% to 85%, many social work students will not reach the first band. A strong final term can still lift you into it.
