Grades only: no essay or portfolio

TMU lists Criminology as a Grades-Only program. Admission decisions are based on academic performance. You don't submit a supplementary essay, video or portfolio to get in.

Some TMU programs are Grades-Plus and ask for non-academic requirements after you apply. Criminology is not one of them, so your marks carry the whole decision.

What first year looks like

Criminology is one of 12 BA programs at TMU that share a one year foundation. In first year you take CRM 100 (Introduction to Canadian Criminal Justice), CRM 102 (Introduction to Criminology), SSH 105 (Critical Thinking) and SSH 205 (Academic Writing and Research). You also take four courses from a set table and two open electives.

Second year covers criminal law in Canada, victims of crime, inequality in the justice system and research methods. Upper years go deeper into youth justice, Indigenous justice, crime prevention, ethics and special topics. TMU's FAQ says you normally take 5 courses a term, with about 15 hours of class a week.

Class sizes and exchange

TMU's Criminology FAQ says classes in years 1 and 2 range from 50 to 150 students. Criminology courses in years 3 and 4 are usually around 60 to 80, and some upper level courses have no more than 30 students.

All classes are on TMU's downtown Toronto campus. Criminology students can apply for exchange at partner universities overseas. Exchange spots are competitive. You can also study at a school without a formal agreement through a Letter of Permission, though you may pay international tuition there.

Co-op

Co-op is optional, and you don't choose it when you first apply. The calendar says students who finish the first semester must apply through the department before the end of first year. Enrolment is limited. TMU decides using a portfolio with your GPA, a resume and a statement of intent, and may hold screening interviews. You must take SSH 104 before your first placement.

You need at least three work terms to graduate from co-op, and it usually takes five years. TMU's two pages describe the length differently. The program page says 12 to 16 months of paid work experience. The calendar says 12 months of work experience. Confirm with TMU if the length matters to you. TMU does not guarantee placements.

Switching into Criminology after first year

Because 12 BA programs share first year, some students start in another Arts program and transfer into Criminology for second year. You must have passed CRM 100, and TMU strongly recommends also taking CRM 102. Transfers are competitive and depend on space.

The two TMU pages word the grade rule differently. The calendar says students are encouraged to present a 3.00 (B) cumulative GPA in their first semester. The department's undergraduate page says a 3.00 (B) is required for transfer consideration. Either way, aim higher than 3.00 and treat the switch as a backup, not a plan.
