One degree, five focus areas

If you're looking for TMU Fashion Design or TMU Fashion Communication, both now sit inside one program. TMU's program page lists Fashion as a Bachelor of Design in The Creative School. It is four years, full time, with no part-time format.

The calendar lists five optional concentrations: Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Fashion Studies, Design Leadership, and Textiles and Material Practices. You can declare one starting in fourth semester. You finish eight courses in that area to get it on your transcript. A concentration is not a degree requirement, and you can also build a mixed path.

So you don't pick design or communication on your application. You apply to Fashion, then shape your path with electives.

Course requirements

Ontario students need the OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses with an overall average of at least 70%. The one required course is Grade 12 U English at a minimum of 70%. TMU prefers ENG4U or EAE4U.

TMU recommends art or visual arts and sewing courses if your school offers them. The calendar says these are not prerequisites, but it strongly recommends them. There's no math or science requirement. Use our course planner to fit an art course into Grade 11 or 12.

The average you need

TMU says an overall average of 70% is required for consideration. The grade range on the program page, 70 to 75%, is what TMU says was needed in previous years. The average can change each year with the number of applications and spaces.

This is a Grades-Plus program. TMU decides on your grades plus your portfolio and statement. TMU also says your ability to follow the instructions is part of the assessment. Check your marks with our Top 6 average calculator.

The portfolio

You send four examples of your best creative work. TMU says the portfolio does not need to show professional fashion skills or technical expertise. It wants to see your creative potential and curiosity, and how you approach making, research, communication and problem-solving.

TMU lists many kinds of work you might include: sewn or upcycled garments, accessories and textiles, graphic design and photography, drawing and painting, essays and fashion writing, business ideas, and events or community projects. These are only suggestions. You can send other work.

TMU encourages process work for at least one piece, such as sketches, notes or material tests. If you didn't record your process, TMU says you don't need to recreate or invent it. Reviewers look at creativity and originality, how you develop ideas, exploration, technical execution and overall presentation.

The statement of intent

In about 500 words, TMU asks you to write about something that has influenced the way you think about fashion. It could be an observation, experience, person, object, image, event, community or issue. You explain why it matters to you, what it shows about fashion today, and how it shaped your interest in the BDes.

You may refer to articles, books or other sources, but you must cite them. TMU asks you to proofread written work carefully.

Your own work: TMU's rule

TMU includes a declaration of authenticity. It says: "By submitting your non-academic requirements, you confirm that all submitted work is your own and that any sources consulted have been appropriately acknowledged."

TMU keeps your submission to check authenticity. It also says that if any part of the portfolio or statement of intent is found to be plagiarized, misrepresented, or not wholly your own, your admission may be revoked. That is an authorship rule. The page does not explicitly ban outside feedback. You create the portfolio and write the statement yourself; an adviser can review your draft for clarity without supplying your answer.

How to submit

Apply first. You then get a TMU Student Number. Put it on every portfolio and statement file. Upload everything through SlideRoom, which accepts images up to 10 MB, PDFs up to 20 MB, video up to 500 MB and audio up to 60 MB. TMU recommends PNG or JPG images of at least 1024 by 1024 pixels and says not to send working files.

Pay the $50 fee through the eForms Centre in the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal. TMU accepts online submissions only. Only complete files are reviewed, and missing parts can't be added after the deadline. Questions go to fashion.admission@torontomu.ca.

Internship, not co-op

Fashion has no co-op option. Instead, an internship is mandatory. Between first year and the end of fall term in fourth year, you complete 250 hours of documented work experience and six approved workshops. That credit goes toward FSN 709 Professional Aspects of Fashion, a required fourth-year course.

TMU lists employers such as Aritzia, Holt Renfrew, Lululemon, Sephora and Roots, and roles like art director, brand strategist and fashion designer.

For parents

Marks matter, but the portfolio and statement weigh heavily, and TMU marks how well your child follows the rules. Help with the calendar, good photos of work and the $50 fee. Leave the creative work and writing to your child. TMU can revoke an offer if any part is not wholly their own.
