What the program is

TMU's Interior Design program is a Bachelor of Fine Arts in The Creative School. It comes in two full-time formats: four years, or five years with co-op. There is no part-time format. TMU says you spend 60% of your class time in the studio.

You study residential, retail, workplace and health care spaces, with a focus on safety, wellness, inclusion and sustainability. TMU lists digital fabrication tools, a 3-axis CNC router, woodworking equipment and a casting and ceramics studio. TMU says the BFA together with its Master of Interior Design forms a program of study recognized by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). After graduation and work experience, you can pursue licensure with ARIDO, the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario, or similar groups.

Course requirements

Ontario students need the OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses with an overall average of at least 70%. Two courses are required:

Unlike many design programs, this one has a math prerequisite. A Grade 11 functions course counts, so you may already have it by the end of Grade 11. Plan your courses with our course planner.

  • Grade 12 U English, with ENG4U or EAE4U preferred, at a minimum of 70%
  • One Grade 11 U or M or Grade 12 U math: MCF3M, MCR3U, MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U, at a minimum of 60%

The average you need

TMU says an overall average of 70% is required for consideration. The grade range at the top of the program page, 75 to 80%, is what TMU says was needed in previous years. The average can change each year with the number of applications and spaces.

This is a Grades-Plus program, so TMU uses your grades and your creative portfolio together. TMU also says your ability to follow the instructions is part of the assessment. TMU does not publish an acceptance rate or the number of spaces. Check your marks with our Top 6 average calculator.

The chair and figure drawing

The title page of your portfolio must be a drawing made by hand, in pencil, ink, charcoal or another analog medium. It shows a chair and a human figure interacting. TMU says drawing is still a core skill in design. The drawing helps TMU see how you observe and show space, proportion and the body.

This page is required. A digital drawing does not meet the rule.

The statement and the work pages

The first page after the title is a written statement of no more than 250 words. TMU sets the question: "Why are you interested in pursuing an in-depth study of design, and how does the work in your portfolio reflect your interests and aspirations?"

Then come up to 10 pages of work. You can show one project in depth or several projects. Each image needs a description of up to 50 words that covers the idea, your process and the materials or tools you used. TMU won't review video or links to outside material.

TMU encourages at least two images made by hand, such as drawings, collages, prints or hand-built models. It says you can use whatever tools you have, and it judges creativity, composition, observation and intention, not access to tools. Your work doesn't need to be about architecture or design.

How to submit

Apply first. Your TMU Student Number comes in the email that confirms your application. Activate your TMU Online Identity, then wait 24 hours and log in to the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal. Upload the single PDF there and pay the $50 fee through the eForms Centre.

TMU strongly encourages you to submit well before the deadline because of system load. The calendar notes that the creative project details can change from year to year, so use the program page for the current version.

Dates for Fall 2027

TMU's guaranteed consideration date for Fall 2027 is February 1 for all programs. The Interior Design portfolio is due February 1, 2027, or 10 business days from when you submit your application, whichever is later.

TMU's decision release page lists February as the guideline for first-round Interior Design offers, and notes the date can change. That is one of TMU's earlier Grades-Plus rounds, so applying in the fall gives you time to finish the portfolio. See all the dates on our Ontario university deadlines page.

What first year looks like

In first semester you take CSE 100 Wicked Problems and Creative Intervention, IDN 101 Design Communications I, IDN 102 Fabrication I, IDN 103 Materiality and IDN 105 Intro. History of Design.

In second semester you take IDN 201 Design Communications II, IDN 202 Fabrication II, IDN 203 Sustainable Systems and IDN 204 Design Theory II, plus one liberal studies course. The calendar says first year gives everyone a common base, and third and fourth year are more open.

Co-op or internship

Every student gets work experience. The co-op option is optional and limited. You apply through the department before the end of first year, after your first semester. TMU decides on your CGPA and an application portfolio. Co-op adds 12 months of paid work starting after second year, and you need at least three work terms to graduate with the co-op designation. TMU says it can't guarantee placements.

If you don't take co-op, you must complete a 400-hour monitored and documented internship before you graduate. The calendar says students usually do it in the summer between third and fourth year.

Tuition for 2026-27

The program page lists 2026-2027 full-time tuition and fees of $7,466 to $8,018 for Ontario students, $9,266 to $9,851 for out-of-province students and $38,733 to $39,209 for international students. These match TMU's range for The Creative School.

TMU updates detailed fees each July, so Fall 2027 amounts may differ. The co-op format takes five years, so plan for an extra year of fees. On-campus residence for 2026-2027 is $9,000 to $15,100 or more, plus a meal plan.

Scholarships

TMU's guaranteed, renewable entrance scholarships for students admitted in 2027-2028 start at a final average of 86%. TMU lists $3,000 a year at 95% and up, $1,500 at 90 to 94.99% and $750 at 86 to 89.99%. Renewal depends on your yearly CGPA.

With a past range of 75 to 80%, many Interior Design admits won't reach 86%. Browse other awards in our scholarship finder.

How it compares at TMU

If you like buildings more than interiors, TMU's Architectural Science program is the closer fit, and it sits in a different faculty. Read our TMU Architectural Science page to compare.

If you're torn between interiors and fashion, both are Grades-Plus programs in The Creative School with a $50 portfolio fee, but they ask for different work.

For parents

There are three things to plan: the math course, the hand drawing and the February 1 portfolio. A Grade 11 functions course at 60% meets the math rule. Offers come early, in February, so a finished portfolio by January is a good goal.

Co-op is optional and adds a year. See our TMU guide for campus and residence context.
