TMU Sport Media admission requirements: Grades-Only entry, live production and the RTA degree

Sport Media is a four-year BA for sports storytelling and production. It is Grades-Only, so it does not ask for an admission reel. Ontario students need six Grade 12 U or M courses and 70% in English. The past range is 80 to 85%. The degree includes a mandatory internship.

You apply with academic results, not a sports highlight reel

Ontario applicants need an OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses, including ENG4U or EAE4U with at least 70%. The overall minimum is also 70%. Sport Media is explicitly Grades-Only on the official program page. Its creative production emphasis doesn't turn admission into the Grades-Plus process used by other RTA or Image Arts degrees.

The displayed past admission range is 80 to 85%, substantially different from the minimum for consideration. That range refers to previous years, and TMU says the average needed changes with demand and spaces. A well-edited reel or sporting achievement isn't a published substitute for the academic file. You may explore production before applying because it interests you, but don't create an invented portfolio requirement. The university assesses equivalency for other curricula and applicant categories. If you're comparing several media degrees, record the assessment type next to each one. Sport Media and Photography both involve creative work, yet their admissions processes are different.

Sports subject matter changes the production degree you are choosing

The BA combines sport storytelling, production and business. The calendar describes training for production, on-air and executive areas of the sport-media industry. The first two years build production and theory foundations, including marketing, business and journalism; later work allows a stronger focus on particular interests.

This isn't a kinesiology or sport-science qualification. If your main interest is anatomy, physical performance or coaching science, compare a degree built around those subjects. Sport Media asks how sport becomes a broadcast, story or media product. It can suit someone who likes both the subject and the work of producing coverage. Ask yourself whether you want to research a story, organize a production team or operate equipment when the game itself isn't the most exciting part of the day. The distinction is practical: enjoyment of watching sport doesn't establish enjoyment of the degree's required technical and critical work.

First year introduces sound, digital media and sport production

The revised calendar for Fall 2026-and-after entrants starts with CSE 100 and RTA 103, RTA 104 and RTA 108. Those subjects address creative intervention, digital media, audio production and sport-media message design. The next semester names RTA 105 sport-media literacy, RTA 106 video sport production and RTA 211 production theory, with an open elective and liberal studies.

Read the audio and theory requirements as seriously as the video ones. A programme comparison based only on television cameras would miss part of the first-year training. The production and literacy mix also suggests useful questions for an open house: how are crews organized, how do students learn to evaluate coverage and what responsibilities do beginners take in practical projects? These are questions about learning, not promises of a particular broadcast assignment. Use the revised sequence for planning, since the page still shows older cohort requirements. Check the calendar for your entry year before assuming every sample course appears in your actual timetable.

Live coverage sits beside journalism and the business of sport

The revised second-year sequence includes sport marketing/promotion, sport journalism and intermediate multicamera sports production. RTA 261 has a course count and weight of two, reflecting a larger curriculum commitment than an ordinary single course. Other listed subjects examine sport, media and society, and sport-media programming.

Later examples include advanced live production, transmedia sports marketing, legal/business aspects of sport and documentary work. These subjects distinguish Sport Media from a generic media-production degree. A student interested mainly in writing should inspect the journalism and critical courses; someone interested in live production should examine the practical sequence without ignoring the business or legal subjects. The published curriculum supports both lines of enquiry, but elective choices and project approvals determine an individual's path. Ask the department how students move between roles and what the workload is during live projects. A required course in marketing doesn't make this a commerce degree, just as an on-air interest doesn't exempt you from technical production training.

Creative Practice means sixty unpaid qualifying hours

The RTA calendar requires at least 60 hours of Creative Practice unpaid volunteer work in a qualifying RTA institution or project. The hours can be completed across the four-year degree. The calendar connects completion with RTA 711 or RTA 431, depending on the program. For Sport Media, the listed practicum is RTA 431.

This requirement is easy to miss when a program page simply says 'internship mandatory'. Creative Practice and the Sport Media internship appear as different curriculum items; don't assume a paid external job automatically fulfils both. Ask RTA how qualifying activity is approved, recorded and checked. The unpaid label is also relevant to your time and budget. Plan the hours around academic work rather than counting on them as wages. You aren't required to complete these hours as a high-school applicant. They are part of the university degree, and describing them as an admission volunteering minimum would turn a graduation rule into a false entry requirement.

The final year has a practicum, capstone and internship

For the revised cohort, the seventh semester lists RTA 431 Sport Media Practicum and RTA 433 critical issues in sports, with electives. The eighth lists RTA 430 capstone and RTA 440 internship. The practicum has a course count and weight of two. Those requirements indicate that later study is more than a sequence of optional industry visits.

TMU identifies the internship as mandatory but the checked sources don't promise a universal paid co-op format or a fixed wage. Ask about placement approval, supervision and which kinds of sport organizations participate. Compare the capstone and practicum with your preferred production role: do you want to build evidence of reporting, team production or another area? The official calendar supplies the degree requirements, while the department can explain current project formats. Keep the latest cohort labels visible. A revised sequence first offered in later academic years isn't evidence that a Fall 2027 applicant will follow the older cohort's timetable.

Fall 2027 applications and Grades-Only decision timing

The application-dates page now identifies Fall 2027 and February 1 as the guaranteed-consideration date for complete applications and amendments. Sport Media doesn't add a creative-material deadline under its Grades-Only entry. Check your ChooseTMU tasks after applying and confirm that the required English course is included in the academic record.

TMU releases decisions on a rolling basis and says most Grades-Only decisions arrive between February and the end of May. Photography's mid-March first-round guideline belongs to a different assessment route. Don't treat it as a Sport Media promise. If a program remains open after the common date, later availability still depends on the school; the existence of a portal account doesn't reserve a place. For transfer or readmission situations, use the applicable requirements rather than assuming the Ontario high-school rules settle credit or standing. Your actual offer will set the conditions you must meet after admission.

Compare facilities, responsibilities and costs before choosing

The program page names the Sportsnet RTA Production Centre and describes live-game coverage and production opportunities. Ask which facilities first-year students actually use, what instruction comes before access and how projects assign technical, editorial and on-air responsibilities. Those questions let you judge the learning environment without turning an industry connection into a job guarantee.

The TMU university overview owns the broader tuition and scholarship comparison; its official 2026-27 figures are dated references for a future-year budget. Include the time required for unpaid Creative Practice and ask separately about internship expenses. Compare Sport Media with Media Production for broader media interests, or Journalism for a different reporting curriculum. The school lists potential roles including broadcaster, director and videographer. They describe career directions to explore, not outcomes promised to every admitted applicant. A strong shortlist is based on required work, assessment type and the experience you want to develop.
