Can you get in from high school?

Yes, you can apply, but TMU is direct about the odds. It says that over the years, very few candidates have been successful in gaining admittance directly from high school. It encourages high school graduates to get more college or university experience first.

The admissions FAQ says applicants are strongly recommended to have at least one year of university. If you apply from Grade 12, also apply to other health programs, so you have a plan if you are not admitted this year.

Course requirements

You need an OSSD with six Grade 12 U or M courses. The required courses are Grade 12 U English (ENG4U preferred), Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) and one Grade 12 U or M course in Canadian and world studies or the social sciences and humanities. Examples TMU gives include history, sociology, psychology and law.

Each of these needs at least 75%. If a required course is still in progress, you must show final or midterm grades by February 1. Our course planner can help you fit both sciences into Grade 12.

The average you need

TMU asks for a 75% overall average and lists the grade range as 75%. It says the range shows the average required in previous years, and that the average needed can change with the number of applications and spaces.

TMU also says that, subject to competition, candidates may need averages above the minimum. It does not publish an acceptance rate. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator, but remember grades are only one part of this decision.

The Midwifery Form

This is a Grades-Plus program. Besides grades, you must send the Midwifery Form through the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal by February 1, 2027. TMU says your ability to follow the requirements is part of the assessment.

The form has four parts. You choose a program format, rank the two placement areas (the Greater Toronto Area and the Greater Ontario Area), and can choose to complete the Racial Equity Admissions Self-ID and the Indigenous Admissions Process sections. You can't switch placement areas after you are admitted.

The interview, Casper and outside help

Selected applicants are invited to an interview through the portal. TMU's high school page says interviews are online: you answer a series of questions and an assessor reviews your recorded answers. It looks at motivation, empathy, responsibility, awareness of the demands of midwifery, and communication and problem solving.

The pages disagree on the format. The Midwifery Form section on the same pages refers to multiple mini interviews. Confirm the format with TMU when you are invited. None of the TMU midwifery pages we checked mention Casper, and none state a rule about outside help with the form or interview.

Program formats

There are three formats: a four year full time program, a five year part time first year entry program and a two year Post Baccalaureate Program for Health Professionals. You state your preferred format on the Midwifery Form, and TMU tells you which one you got in your offer.

The program starts in September only. It is not available to international students. TMU's program page says you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to be eligible.

What first year looks like

In the first semester you take BLG 101 Anatomy and Physiology I, MWF 115 Research Methods for Midwives, MWF 150 Introduction to Midwifery and MWF 11A/B Social Justice in Midwifery, plus a gender and women's studies course and an open elective.

In the second semester you take BLG 111 Anatomy and Physiology II, MWF 113 Life Sciences for Midwifery and MWF 108 Introduction to Indigenous Midwifery. The pre-clinical part of the program can take 1.5 to 2.5 years, in classes of 15 to 50 students.

Placements, not co-op

There is no co-op. Clinical placements are mandatory. The program page describes over 2 years of placements in communities and hospitals, while the admissions FAQ says students spend 2 1/2 years in clinical placements. Before you graduate you attend at least 60 births, including 40 as the lead caregiver.

Placements are mostly in the Greater Toronto Area and the Greater Ontario Area. You need reliable transport, may need to move for placements, and TMU says it is not possible to keep an outside job during them.

Dates for Fall 2027

TMU's guaranteed consideration date for all programs is February 1. For Midwifery, the Fall 2027 application and the Midwifery Form are both due February 1, 2027. Most applicants apply through OUAC.

Interview invitations come through the portal. TMU makes about 45 offers in early May and may place some applicants on a wait list, which closes at the end of the first week of classes. Compare other schools on our Ontario deadlines page.

Tuition for 2026-27

TMU lists a 2026-2027 tuition and fees range of $7,502 to $7,985 for the full time format for Ontario students, and $9,335 to $9,958 for students from other provinces. Part time ranges from $1,051 to $5,641 for Ontario students, depending on course load.

The FAQ warns that travel and living costs during placements are yours to cover, and that careful financial planning is needed. A newly graduated full time midwife can expect around $100,000 before taxes, according to the same FAQ.

Scholarships

For students admitted for 2027-2028 from a Canadian secondary school, TMU guarantees a renewable entrance scholarship at 86% and higher. It is $750 a year at 86% to 89.99%, $1,500 at 90% to 94.99%, and $3,000 at 95% and up.

Renewal depends on your yearly CGPA. Many midwifery admits come with university experience, so check which awards apply if you enter after a year elsewhere.

TMU or McMaster?

McMaster also runs a midwifery program, with its own application steps and marks. We cover it on our McMaster Midwifery page, so we won't repeat it here.

At TMU, grades are only one of the components reviewed, and spots are limited to about 45 a year. Many students apply to more than one midwifery program and add a backup health program, such as TMU Nursing.

For parents

This is a demanding, limited enrolment program. TMU accepts about 45 students a year and says successful applicants usually have one or more years of university or equivalent experience. A year of university first is a normal path, not a setback.

Before applying, TMU suggests reading about midwifery on the Association of Ontario Midwives website and exploring the program's own site. Our TMU admissions overview covers the university as a whole.
