Course requirements

TMU needs an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with six Grade 12 U or M courses and an overall average of at least 70%. For Computer Science, you need English (ENG4U, or EAE4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U, preferred) or Data Management (MDM4U), and one science: Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Each needs at least 70%.

The science requirement is easy to miss, so check it before you finalize Grade 12. Map your courses with our course planner.

What the 75-80% range means

70% is TMU's minimum to be considered. The 75-80% range on the program page is what was needed in previous years. TMU says the real average changes each year with the number of applications and spaces.

TMU doesn't publish a Computer Science acceptance rate. See our TMU acceptance rate page for what it does publish, and check your own average with our Top 6 average calculator.

How TMU counts your average

TMU uses your best six Grade 12 U or M courses, which may or may not include the prerequisites. Averages run to two decimal places and aren't rounded. Repeated or upgraded marks can count.

Grade 11 marks may be used for early offers, but each offer sets the Grade 12 final results you need. Requirements must be done by June 30 unless your offer says otherwise.

Grades-only, and the February 1 date

Computer Science is a grades-only program, with no supplementary application. TMU's guaranteed consideration date for Fall 2027 is February 1, and complete applications received by then get equal consideration.

Most grades-only decisions come out on a rolling basis between February and the end of May. If you applied by February 1 and land on a wait list, TMU tells you by late May.

What you study

TMU's Computer Science program sits in the Faculty of Science. It covers artificial intelligence, coding, cybersecurity, virtual reality, computer graphics and human-computer interaction.

You can take a concentration in Software Engineering or an optional specialization in Management Sciences. An optional fourth-year thesis lets you do a capstone project or research.

TMU lists careers such as cloud systems engineer, cybersecurity specialist, data scientist, full-stack developer and UX engineer, and employers such as Amazon, Apple, CBC, Google and Wealthsimple.

First year

TMU's 2026-27 calendar lists first-semester courses including Computer Science I, Introduction to Multimedia Computation, Computer Organization I and Discrete Mathematics I, plus a science course such as biology, chemistry or physics.

Second semester adds Computer Science II, Computer Organization II and Social Issues, Ethics and Professionalism. Later core courses include data structures, UNIX, C and C++, linear algebra, calculus and an introduction to software engineering.

The Management Sciences specialization covers strategic engineering management, operations research, finance and organizational behaviour. A non-credit research practicum lets you work on a faculty member's research and have it noted on your transcript.

TMU also runs a part-time, 40-course Computer Science degree with the same academic content, mainly for students who already have some post-secondary computing.

Co-op

Computer Science comes in a four-year format or a five-year co-op format. The optional co-op gives you 20 months of work experience and stretches the degree from four years to five.

You don't enter co-op from high school. You apply once, at the end of first year, in the spring/summer admissions period, and spaces are limited. TMU looks at your GPA, courses, a resume, a statement of intent and sometimes an interview. You need all first-year courses done, clear academic standing and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00, and you must keep that GPA to stay in.

Work terms normally start after second year. TMU's Career and Co-op Centre helps you find jobs but can't guarantee one. TMU also notes you'd be studying in one of North America's fastest-growing tech job markets.

Applying from another province or the IB

Students at Canadian high schools outside Ontario are considered with their province's equivalent courses. TMU says subject grades are normally needed in the 65 to 75% range, and some Faculty of Science programs require calculus, so check your province's list.

IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma students need grades of 4 or higher in three Higher Level and three Standard Level subjects, with a total of at least 28. IB and AP courses may earn transfer credit.

Tuition and scholarships

TMU's program page lists 2026-27 tuition and fees of $7,397 to $9,958 for Ontario students, $9,197 to $12,481 from other provinces and $38,702 to $38,762 for international students. 2027-28 fees aren't posted yet.

For Fall 2027, TMU guarantees a renewable entrance scholarship to students at Canadian high schools with a final average of 86% or more: $750 a year at 86% to 89.99%, $1,500 at 90% to 94.99% and $3,000 at 95% or more, renewed on your CGPA. Estimate yours on our Top 6 average calculator, and see our TMU financial aid page.

For parents

TMU Computer Science has one of the lower published ranges in Ontario, and no supplement. The catch is the prerequisite list: a Grade 12 science is required, not optional.

Co-op isn't decided at admission. Your child applies at the end of first year with a 3.00 GPA, so first-year marks decide whether they get the five-year co-op route.
