How Toronto Metropolitan University co-op works

Toronto Metropolitan University offers paid co-op or co-op internship options in selected programs, but there is no single admission model for the entire university. Most central optional programs use a competitive application after first year. Architectural Science, Chemical Engineering, other Engineering programs, and Ted Rogers business programs use different entry, sequence, or fee rules.

A standard TMU work term is 16 weeks of paid, full-time, program-related work at 35 to 40 hours per week. Most co-op designations require three or four successful work terms, depending on the program. Admission provides the process and support; students still apply and interview for jobs, and employment is not guaranteed.

Is TMU co-op direct entry from high school?

Usually not for the central optional co-op programs. Students enter the regular academic program, complete first year, and compete for limited co-op spaces using completed courses, CGPA, application materials, and any program-specific review. The current central minimums range from 2.5 to 3.0 for many listed programs, but TMU warns that grades above the minimum may be needed.

The exceptions matter. Architectural Science evaluates students after two years. Eight FEAS Engineering programs currently admit to the co-op and internship process after second year. Chemical Engineering is structured as a five-year co-op degree with mandatory work experience. Ted Rogers programs publish separate admission routes. Applicants should therefore check the exact degree rather than treating “TMU co-op” as one option selected on every high-school application.

How TMU co-op hiring works

TMU uses a continuous hiring process: jobs are posted to the co-op portal on a first-come, first-served basis, and students apply and interview through a real-world process. TMU does not use a student and employer ranking or matching system. Students can also find their own paid, full-time, relevant role of at least 12 consecutive weeks—16 is the norm—but the faculty advisor must approve it before the student accepts the job.

TMU explicitly says students are not placed and employment is not guaranteed. Its current application page reports that 60% of students who complete a co-op program receive a full-time offer before graduation, but that is a post-completion outcome—not a co-op placement rate and not a promise to an individual applicant.

How much does TMU co-op cost?

TMU's central optional co-op page lists a $3,500 total participation fee paid in instalments. The fee supports advising, preparation, recruitment, job development, infrastructure, and employer relationships. It is not tied to the number or timing of jobs secured, is non-refundable, and can change without notice.

Do not apply that figure to every faculty. Ted Rogers currently lists $4,200 for students admitted to its co-op program in Fall 2025. FEAS Engineering charges term-based fees after a placement is secured; for example, its published Fall 2026 cohort schedule lists $753 for Winter 2027 and $791 for later listed placement terms. Fast-track, Architectural Science, and Chemical Engineering schedules also need separate checks.

Zone Learning: TMU's startup-incubator differentiator

Co-op is not the only TMU work-experience route. Zone Learning is a network of ten on-campus incubator zones—led by the DMZ, which TMU calls the top-ranked university incubator in the world—covering health technology, clean energy, fabrication, fashion, legal innovation, science ventures, social ventures, and media. TMU reports more than 4,700 startups launched from Zone Learning, and the ZON-100 route lets students earn course credit while building a venture.

Zones are open to students across programs, so an Arts, Science, Engineering, Ted Rogers, or Creative School student can work on a startup alongside the degree instead of choosing between them. Zone membership is a separate application from co-op, does not replace a program's required work terms, and does not carry the co-op fee, so compare both routes against the student's actual career plan.

Each card names the cycle it belongs to, its verification status, and the official TMU page it came from, so the 2026 window, fee schedules, and Zone Learning claims stay separated from guesses about future cycles.

Can international students do TMU co-op?

Eligible international students can participate in TMU co-op. Current federal rules changed on April 1, 2026: eligible post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for required placements when they meet IRCC's study-permit, full-time study, institutional-letter, and program-percentage conditions. A medical examination may still be required for certain roles.

TMU's general international working page still contains the older instruction to apply for a co-op work permit. Because the university page and current IRCC rule are not yet aligned, students should use the live IRCC eligibility page and confirm their own documents with TMU International Student Support before starting a placement.
