English is the named subject prerequisite
The Ontario route requires an OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses with an overall minimum of 70%. The required Grade 12 U English course must also reach 70%; ENG4U or EAE4U is preferred. The admission page labels the program Grades-Only. You aren't asked for the visual portfolio used by Photography or the audition used by a performance degree.
The displayed 70 to 75% grade range describes previous years. TMU warns that competition changes the result needed for admission. This matters for an English-heavy application: reaching the English minimum doesn't cancel the overall-average check, and an overall total above the floor doesn't excuse a weak required English mark. For a non-Ontario education, transfer or other applicant category, use the university's matching academic requirements. A writing interest is a reason to consider ProCom, but it isn't evidence that TMU will waive a prerequisite. Keep your admission file focused on the requested academic evidence and documents.

Communication practice includes more than polished sentences
ProCom combines communication research and analysis with practical work in written, spoken and digital forms. The calendar describes attention to technologies, social identities, professional practices and intercultural communication. That makes the BA broader than an editing course or a certificate in social-media tools. You study why a message works in its context, as well as how to produce it.
Its stated applications include public relations, internal communication and digital-media development. Compare those areas with your interests: do you want to interpret what an organization needs to communicate, understand its audience and select an appropriate medium? The degree's combination of theory and practice could fit that work. If you mainly want reporting or broadcast production, read Journalism or Media Production alongside it. Those programs overlap in communication skills but organize their required training differently. A program title alone won't tell you how much research, presentation and organizational work fills the week. Use the course sequence to make that judgment.

Use the revised first-year sequence for Fall 2026 and later entrants
The 2026-27 calendar marks a revised curriculum for students admitted in Fall 2026 and afterward. Its first semester names CMN 200 professional writing, CMN 210 communication through text/image/sound and CMN 216 communication revolutions, plus an open elective and liberal studies. The second semester adds CMN 130 communication theory, CMN 288 social media, CMN 314 presentations and CSE 100 creative intervention, with liberal studies.
These examples let you test whether the degree matches how you want to learn. Writing is central, but you also work with visual or audio meaning and present to others. The calendar retains earlier sequences for older cohorts; don't choose a first-year plan by combining whichever old and new course names appeal to you. A Fall 2027 applicant should confirm the calendar issued for their cohort before registration. Admission doesn't require you to have completed these university subjects in advance. It requires the published high-school academic preparation and complete application.
Data, power and organizational audiences appear beyond first year
For the revised cohort, the next stage includes visual communication, strategic foresight and research methods. It also names CMN 211 language and power, CMN 222 digital discourse/design and CMN 316 questioning data. This is useful evidence if you want communication work that examines assumptions behind a message instead of only its surface style.
Later required subjects include organizational communication, strategic storytelling and advanced professional writing. One listed choice group examines Indigenous storytelling, intercultural communication or political communication and race. A final-year advocacy course and the professional-communication capstone develop the sequence further. These are curriculum examples, not promises that every graduate will work in a particular advocacy field. Ask the school what organizations or problems current projects engage with and how independent research is assessed. That conversation will help distinguish ProCom from a purely production-focused degree. Open electives and liberal studies provide additional breadth, subject to the program's restrictions and available courses.
Co-op admission happens in the second semester of first year
The calendar says regular-program students indicate interest in co-op through the department during the second semester of year one. Places are limited. Selection uses cumulative university GPA and an application portfolio, with dates and detailed requirements provided to students. This portfolio belongs to the later co-op application. It is not a Grade 12 supplementary portfolio for the Grades-Only BA.
The option includes 12 months of paid work and extends the degree to five years. A co-op preparation course and a participation fee also apply; the calendar doesn't give a fixed fee to copy into a future-year budget. Ask how the GPA review and portfolio assessment work before planning around guaranteed access. The Career & Co-op Centre helps with job searches but explicitly doesn't guarantee a placement. This is a good option to compare with Creative Industries' mandatory internship, because the selection point, duration and degree schedule differ rather than merely using different labels for the same experience.
The work-term sequence changes when you take academic courses
The published co-op pattern places one work term in the winter of second year, followed by work periods in the fall and summer of third year. The fourth academic semester falls in the winter of third year. Academic study continues in years four and five. Graduation with the co-op designation requires three successful work terms. Work assessment includes the student's written report and the employer's evaluation, and the terms are graded pass/fail.
These details explain the extra year more clearly than a general promise of work experience. You're interrupting and resuming the academic sequence according to a defined pattern. Ask how course availability and a potential placement affect a minor or exchange you are considering. The calendar also says students cannot complete both an internship and a co-op designation. If you want to combine experiences, get the department's guidance about the permitted route instead of counting them twice in a proposed degree plan. Co-op access and an actual employer offer remain separate decisions.
Application timing belongs to the BA, not the later co-op competition
For Fall 2027, the official application page lists February 1 for guaranteed consideration of complete applications and amendments. ProCom follows the Grades-Only assessment schedule, where most decisions arrive between February and the end of May. The university sends the actual outcome through ChooseTMU. These dates concern entry to the undergraduate degree; the department later supplies the co-op competition dates.
If you receive a request for academic documents, use your own portal checklist. Another student's deadline or admission letter doesn't define yours. Transfer applicants should confirm both the entry route and how previous coursework affects eligibility for the regular or co-op sequence. The program's four-year/five-year distinction is a format choice with academic and experiential consequences, not two different high-school grade guarantees. Keep the BA admission requirements, first-year co-op selection and eventual job search on separate parts of your plan. That makes it easier to compare ProCom with another school that admits directly into a co-op stream.

Build a communication-focused comparison and budget
University-wide tuition and entrance awards belong in the TMU overview; use its official 2026-27 fee links as dated planning evidence. Ask the department about the additional co-op fee and the cost of an extra year if you pursue that route. A paid work-term label doesn't establish how much income you would earn.
For a program comparison, look at the writing/research balance, how presentation work is taught and what the capstone requires. ProCom's calendar permits minors with exclusions and restricts CMN courses from filling its liberal-studies requirements. That means a communication-heavy elective plan still needs to satisfy the other parts of the BA. The calendar lists possible paths in public relations, policy, research and event work, as well as later study. Professional schools and graduate programs set their own admissions rules. Choose the degree for the communication questions you want to investigate, then check the particular requirements of any next qualification.
