What the program is

Media Production is a Bachelor of Arts in The Creative School, run by the RTA School of Media. It is a four year, full-time program with no part-time format. TMU says you will learn to make content for television, podcasts, radio, AR and VR, video games and multi-camera studio shows. You also study screenwriting, sound design, the media business and audiences.

Students work in studios such as the Allan Slaight Radio Institute and the Arthur Smith Virtual Production Studio. TMU lists employers like Apple TV, Bell Media, CBC, Netflix and Rogers, and roles such as screenwriter, showrunner and development executive. These are examples, not job promises.

Grades-Only, not Grades-Plus

Some students expect a creative portfolio here, since TMU's film degree asks for one. Media Production does not. The program page says it is a Grades-Only program, and that decisions for Grades-Only programs are based on academic performance.

TMU's decision release dates page lists the Grades-Plus programs that need interviews, auditions, essays or portfolios. Media Production is not on that list. So there is no supplementary form, assessment fee or portfolio due date for this program.

That also means your Grade 12 marks carry the whole file. Plan your best six U or M courses with care.

Course requirements

Ontario students need the OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses with an overall average of at least 70%. The one required course is Grade 12 U English, ENG4U or EAE4U, with a minimum grade of 70%.

The 2026-2027 Undergraduate Calendar says the same: a grade of 70 percent or higher will be required in ENG4U or EAE4U. It adds that, subject to competition, you may need averages or grades above the minimum.

There is no math or science prerequisite. The calendar suggests courses that build research, writing and critical thinking. It says arts, media and performance courses can show your interest, but students come from a wide range of subjects. Use our course planner to line up your six.

The average you need

TMU says an overall average of 70% is required for consideration. The grade range at the top of the program page, 80 to 85%, is what TMU says was needed in previous years. TMU adds that the average can change each year with the number of applications and spaces.

Treat 70% as the floor, not the target. Aim for the low to mid 80s across your top six. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

Is TMU media production hard to get into?

TMU does not publish an acceptance rate or an enrolment cap for Media Production. What it does publish is the past grade range of 80 to 85%. That is higher than Image Arts: Film, which lists 75 to 80% but also needs a portfolio.

Because the program is Grades-Only, there is no portfolio to lift a lower average. If your marks are close to 80%, also apply to programs that weigh creative work, or to a Grades-Only program with a lower range.

What first year looks like

First semester has four required courses: RTA 101 Introduction to Media Theory and Practice, RTA 102 Creative Process for Media Production, RTA 103 Intro to Digital Media and RTA 104 Introductory Audio Production. You also take one lower-level liberal studies course.

Second semester has five: RTA 211 Production Theory, RTA 212 Media Writing, RTA 213 Production: Introduction to Multi-Camera, RTA 243 Production: Introduction to Single Camera and RTA 250 Media Literacy and Information.

This is a revised curriculum. It began in 2026-2027 for students admitted Fall 2026 and after, and the revised third and fourth semesters begin in 2027-2028. Students admitted from Fall 2026 on will not complete a Concentration, which earlier students could choose.

Upper years and the thesis

In seventh and eighth semester you choose one of four routes: a thesis production project, a major research paper, a media writing project, or core electives. Eighth semester also includes RTA 711 Master Class.

To graduate from any RTA School of Media program, you also need at least 60 hours of unpaid Creative Practice volunteer work on a qualifying RTA project or group. You can do these hours at any time over the four years.

Co-op and internships

Media Production does not have co-op. The program page lists "Internship available" and says you can combine your studies with an optional internship in a professional media setting. In the calendar, RTA 888 Media Production Internship is one choice in your final semester.

You also start in studio courses in first year, with simulated live broadcast settings. TMU mentions exchanges, travel intensives and the Global Campus Studio as other options.

Dates for Fall 2027

TMU's guaranteed consideration date for Fall 2027 is February 1 for all programs. TMU says complete applications received by then get equal consideration, and it suggests applying early. Ontario students apply through OUAC.

TMU releases decisions on a rolling basis. For Grades-Only programs, TMU says most decisions come out between February and the end of May. If you applied by February 1, you will hear by late May if you are put on a wait list. See all the dates on our Ontario university deadlines page.

Tuition for 2026-27

The program page lists 2026-2027 full-time tuition and fees of $7,466 to $8,018 for Ontario students, $9,266 to $9,851 for out-of-province students and $38,733 to $39,209 for international students. These match TMU's range for The Creative School on its main tuition page.

TMU updates detailed program fees each July for the year that starts in September, so Fall 2027 figures may differ. On-campus residence for 2026-2027 is listed at $9,000 to $15,100 or more, plus a meal plan.

Scholarships

TMU's guaranteed, renewable entrance scholarships for students admitted in 2027-2028 start at a final average of 86%. TMU lists $3,000 a year at 95% and up, $1,500 at 90 to 94.99% and $750 at 86 to 89.99%. Renewal depends on your yearly CGPA.

With a past range of 80 to 85%, some Media Production admits will reach the first tier and some won't. TMU's prestigious entrance scholarships need an AwardSpring application, open for fall 2027 from November 2, 2026 to February 16, 2027. Browse more in our scholarship finder.

For parents

There is no portfolio to manage, so the main job is the Grade 12 average and ENG4U at 70% or more. The past range of 80 to 85% is the number to plan around.

Ask about the 60 hours of volunteer Creative Practice work, which is a graduation rule. See our TMU guide for campus and residence context.
