Direct entry or later entry?
Carleton offers direct entry. A Grade 12 student applies to the Bachelor of Social Work and takes SOWK 1001, Introduction to Social Welfare, and SOWK 1002, Introduction to Social Work, in first year.
Later entry also exists. Carleton's calendar says students who already finished an undergraduate degree are normally admitted with third year standing. That is a shorter path if you already hold a degree.

Course requirements
Ontario students need an OSSD with at least six 4U or M courses. Carleton strongly recommends a 4U English course. There is no math or science requirement.
Take ENG4U even though it is not strictly required. The essay part of the application rewards strong writing, and so does the degree. Plan your year with our course planner.

The average you need
Carleton's calendar says an overall average of at least 70% is normally required, and that competitive programs may need more. The pages we checked do not post a social work cut-off range, and Carleton does not publish an acceptance rate.
Your essay is scored too, so grades are not the only factor. Still, aim well above 70%. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

The supplementary application
All BSW applicants send a supplementary application. The main essay is 500 words at most. It asks how your life experiences connect to society and how they shaped your interest in social work. Carleton scores it with a rubric on two areas: your experiences and their link to society, and your understanding of social work. Each is marked from 0 to 6. Read the rubric before you write, and answer both parts directly.
You also send a resume of paid and unpaid work, placements, certificates and community involvement, with dates and hours. An optional second essay of 250 to 500 words can explain things that hurt your grades. You can submit only once, and the submission is final. Carleton does not say how much the supplement counts against your grades.

How to prepare
Start your resume now. Carleton wants dates and hours, so keep a simple log of volunteer shifts, jobs and clubs through Grade 11 and 12.
For the essay, pick one or two real experiences and explain what they taught you about society and why social work fits. Draft early, then leave time to edit before March 5, since you cannot change it after you submit.

Dates for Fall 2027
Carleton's BSW instructions list an application deadline of March 1, 2027 and a supplementary deadline of March 5, 2027. No late submissions are accepted.
Carleton's program page calls this an early application deadline. Many Ontario students apply on OUAC by mid January anyway. See our Ontario deadlines page.

Field placements, not co-op
The BSW has no co-op stream. Instead it has two practicums, each worth 2.0 credits. Practicum I is 352 hours over fall and winter, or winter only. Practicum II is another 352 hours in the fall or summer, with required seminars.
Carleton lists placement areas such as child protection and youth services, women's health and crisis centres, mental health, addiction and homelessness supports, government, and international organizations.

Staying in the program
The degree is 20.0 credits, with 10.5 in the major. You must keep a Major CGPA of at least 6.00. Students with 15.5 or more program credits and a Major CGPA under 6.00 must leave the BSW.
Plan your workload with that rule in mind. It is a firm line, not a guideline. The practicums also take a lot of time each week, so try to build strong grades in the first two years, before field work begins. Ask for help early if a course is going badly, rather than waiting for final marks.

Registration after you graduate
Graduates can apply to the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Carleton notes that starting in 2027 you will need to pass an entry to practice exam to become a Registered Social Worker.
Carleton lists careers in advocacy, child welfare, counselling, family services, government, mental health, refugee services and youth services.

Tuition for 2026-27
Carleton's Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 fee table lists the Bachelor of Social Work at $7,980.00 for first year and $7,969.54 for second to fourth year, for Ontario students. These include compulsory fees and the U-Pass.
Students from other provinces and international students pay more. Check Carleton's student accounts pages for those tables. Budget for books, transit to your practicum agency and residence on top of tuition.
Entrance scholarships
Carleton gives renewable Entrance Scholarships automatically to admitted students with an admission average of 85% or higher. Your application and grades must be in by June 15.
Prestige Scholarships need 90% or better plus activities outside class, with an application and reference by March 1. Compare with our TMU social work page and Carleton admissions overview.

Direct entry or a degree first?
If you are sure about social work in Grade 12, direct entry is the clear path. You take social work courses from first year, then complete both practicums in the later years of a four year degree.
If you are not sure yet, you can finish another degree first. Carleton normally admits degree holders with third year standing, so the BSW part becomes shorter. That route takes more years in total, but it keeps your options open. The supplementary essay and resume still apply.

For parents
Carleton's BSW is open to your child in Grade 12, but it is not grades only. Every applicant writes a 500 word essay and sends a resume. Both are due by March 5, 2027, and there is no second chance once they are sent.
Help your child keep a record of volunteer and work hours this year. That makes the resume easy. Keep an eye on the 6.00 Major CGPA rule after admission too, because students below it late in the degree must leave the program.
