No direct entry from high school
McMaster does not admit Grade 12 students straight into social work. Its School of Social Work says students start in the Social Sciences Level I program and apply to the BSW at the end of their first year.
So from high school you apply on OUAC to Social Sciences I, code ML. If the BSW does not admit you, you are still in a Social Sciences degree and can pick another major. Plan for that outcome too.

Step one: getting into Social Sciences I
You need an Ontario high school diploma and six Grade 12 U or M courses, including ENG4U. McMaster lists the anticipated admission range as the low to mid 80s. Target enrolment is 950 students.
There is no supplementary application at this step. Ontario high school students are considered on a rolling basis from February. Offers come out as grades arrive until May 15, with final decisions by May 27. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

Step two: what to take in first year
To apply to the BSW you need six units of introductory Social Work or Sociology and six more units of introductory courses from McMaster's course list. The school strongly encourages SOCWORK 1AA3 and SOCWORK 1BB3. An Indigenous Studies course is also required to finish the BSW.
Choose your first year timetable with these in mind from day one. Missing a prerequisite can delay your application by a year.

Step two: how the BSW chooses students
You need a grade point average of at least 6.0. Then McMaster scores two things equally: your personal statement counts for 50% and your academic record counts for 50%.
You also need 100 hours of volunteer, work or placement experience in human services or social change. At least 50 hours must be done before admission. The other hours are finished later, before your first placement. You submit two references from that experience. These hours are required but not scored. Enrolment is limited, and McMaster does not publish how many students it admits.

Is the two step route right for you?
The McMaster route suits students who want a broad first year before they commit. You take social science courses with a large class, then compete for a limited number of BSW spots. If you are sure about social work now, a direct entry school removes that second hurdle.
Many students apply to both kinds of program on OUAC. That way, a strong Grade 12 year can secure a BSW seat elsewhere while McMaster stays an option. The cost is the same Social Sciences first year either way, so the choice is mostly about risk and fit.

Preparing the personal statement
The statement is half of your BSW score, so give it real time. McMaster uses it to judge personal suitability and professional experience. That means your volunteer and work hours feed straight into what you write.
Keep notes during first year on what you did, who you served and what you learned. Ask your two references early, since they must come from your volunteer, human services work or placement experience.

Dates for Fall 2027
For high school students the first deadline is the Social Sciences I application. McMaster's tool lists April 1, 2027, but most Ontario students apply on OUAC by mid January. See our Ontario deadlines page.
The BSW application itself happens in first year. For September 2027 entry to the BSW, the supplementary application opens October 15 and is due February 2, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. If you start Social Sciences I in Fall 2027, your own BSW deadline will fall in early 2028. Confirm that date with the school.

Volunteer hours start now
McMaster says the BSW hours are in addition to the volunteer hours Ontario students already need for their high school diploma. Hours used for your diploma do not count twice.
If you are in Grade 12, you can start building human services experience now. A food bank, youth program or shelter shift log with dates will make the BSW step easier in first year.

College diploma and degree holders
Graduates of a two year social services diploma with at least a 3.0 GPA get credit for the introductory courses. With 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale, they receive 24 units of transfer credit.
People with a finished degree can apply to the post degree BSW. They need a 6.0 average on their last 30 units of university courses plus the same introductory courses. The deadline is February 2, 2027, and decisions usually go out around June 15.

Field education and co-op
The school says BSW students get hands on experiential education from practitioners in human services settings through field placements. The pages we checked do not list the placement hours.
There is no social work co-op. McMaster's Social Sciences co-op options are in Economics, Political Science and Work and Labour Studies.

For parents
Getting into McMaster is not the same as getting into social work. Your child applies again in first year, and the personal statement counts as much as the grades.
Help your child pick the right first year courses and keep a volunteer log. Look at a direct entry school as a backup, such as our TMU social work page, and read the McMaster admissions overview.
