Required Physics and mathematics distinguish this design route

The Industrial Design calendar requires an OSSD or equivalent and six Grade 12 U or M courses, including Advanced Functions MHF4U and Physics SPH4U. Design Technology and Visual Arts are recommended. They can support exploration of design, but neither replaces the two required subjects. The Ontario admissions framework says prerequisites must be 4U and normally have no individual result below 60%.

Grade 12 U English is recommended across degrees in the checked general framework. Don't promote that recommendation to a BID-specific requirement without a program rule saying so. The live Ontario tool shows a 75 to 77% minimum cut-off range for Industrial Design; the tool says ranges apply to overall and prerequisite averages and are subject to change. That is different from the final grades needed to retain a conditional offer. For another educational background, select the correct applicant category rather than translating this Ontario course set yourself. Creative selection and academic eligibility both matter for the BID.

The Fall 2027 portfolio combines a resumé, statement and creative work

Carleton's cycle-specific portfolio page asks for a resumé, a statement explaining why you want to study industrial design and a diverse selection of creative work. It suggests ten to fifteen works. Suggested is the important qualifier: don't recast that range as an inflexible rule when the official page doesn't do so. The work should reveal critical thinking and the problem-solving process behind the final result.

The examples are broad. Drawing, sculpture or painting can be relevant, but so can digital/performance work, human interaction with designed objects, fabrication or coding. You don't have to pretend you have already worked as a professional product designer. Explain the problem, making process or theme where that helps the assessor understand your own work. For a group project, identify what you contributed. A prototype made by a team doesn't become individual work simply because you photographed it. Use the current School of Industrial Design instructions for digital format and delivery, rather than importing another school's portfolio layout.

The school assesses thinking and reflection, and offers feedback

The portfolio page lists written, two-dimensional, three-dimensional and multimedia abilities, together with critical thinking and collaboration. Its stated traits include curiosity, reflection, growth potential and an entrepreneurial mindset. That gives you a more accurate preparation target than making every object look like a finished commercial product. Retain evidence of how an idea developed and explain decisions you actually made.

Carleton explicitly invites applicants to bring finished or in-progress work to information sessions for feedback. Seeking that kind of review is consistent with the checked instructions. Your statement still needs your reasons and your words; a reviewer shouldn't invent projects, motivations or contributions. The current Fall 2027 sessions include December 18, 2026 in person, January 15, 2027 online and February 12, 2027 online, each at 1 p.m. Confirm registration and event details with the school. A feedback session is a chance to understand selection and the learning environment, not a promise of admission or a required attendance condition.

March application and portfolio dates do different jobs

The Fall 2027 Industrial Design page gives March 1 for receipt of the application by Admissions Services and March 5 for receipt of the portfolio by the school. It says offers may begin as early as March and encourages early portfolio submission for first-round consideration. That guidance doesn't guarantee an offer if you upload first.

The general Ontario application guidance also recommends submission by January 15, 2027. Keep that recommendation separate from the program's March deadlines; don't replace the earlier planning recommendation or imply that the portfolio is due on January 15. The school uses a digital-only portfolio process and directs applicants to its current detailed format instructions. After applying, check Carleton360 for missing documents and status. A submitted OUAC application doesn't establish that the school has received the creative material. Save the portfolio receipt as its own record. These dates belong to BID and must not be copied onto IMD, whose detailed current instructions aren't supplied by the same page.

First year joins studio projects with science and social subjects

The 2026-27 BID calendar lists a 20.0-credit degree. First year includes design theory/history, industrial-design analysis and Projects IA/IB. It also includes microeconomics, macroeconomics, linear algebra, two introductory psychology courses and elementary university physics. That mix explains the admission Physics requirement and shows that the program is more than workshop practice.

Use this sequence to compare Carleton with an art-school industrial-design BDes. Ask whether you want mathematical and physical preparation taught alongside studio work, and whether the psychology/economics context fits your design interests. The admission page describes wood/plastic/metal prototyping, soft-goods and digital-fabrication facilities. Ask what training precedes access and what materials students need for early projects. Having facilities named in a description doesn't mean a beginner can use every machine immediately. The actual calendar and school instructions govern registration and access. The course list here is the latest published curriculum reference, not a verified Fall 2027 timetable.

Manufacturing, ergonomics and capstone progression build on the studio sequence

Second-year required subjects include design for manufacturing, computer applications, sensory aspects of user experience, ergonomics and Projects IIA/IIB. Later requirements add professional practice, design research, the context of products and marketing. This is useful if you want to understand how objects are made and used, rather than mainly focusing on visual branding or digital interfaces.

The core studio sequence has explicit continuation rules. Every Industrial Design Core course needs at least C-. A result below that level can require a repeat under the overall academic-standing rules. The calendar defines second-year status through successful completion of IDES 1001 and IDES 1301 with limited remaining first-year deficiencies. Later project access depends on earlier core completion. These are university progression standards, not high-school admission percentages. Ask how a missed or repeated project affects the later sequence before assuming any elective can fill the gap. The fourth-year capstone builds on that progression and is part of the required degree work.

BID co-op checks both the overall and design-core CGPA

The BID co-op option requires full-time status, completion of COOP 1000 and at least 5.0 credits. Its university-grade thresholds are an overall CGPA of 6.50 and an Industrial Design Core CGPA of 8.00, maintained through the degree. Three successful work terms are needed for the co-op designation. These numerical scales are not percentages and shouldn't be compared directly with your Grade 12 total.

The calendar's work/study pattern spreads study and work over a longer sequence than the ordinary four-year academic description. Ask how placements fit the studio prerequisites and what happens if a particular work term isn't obtained. Carleton's co-op regulations say employment isn't guaranteed, and a work term cannot be the final term of the degree. Fees and job-search responsibilities also apply. The calendar separately lists an industrial-design internship field-report course, so don't assume every experience has the same requirements as co-op. Get the school's advice on the route that matches your project and work-experience goals.

Conditional offers and a program-specific comparison

The 2027-28 final-offer table requires 70% overall for BID and a combined 65% in Advanced Functions and Physics, with the general minimum of 60% in each prerequisite where no other mark is indicated. Those are offer-retention conditions, not the live 75-to-77% entry range. Read the conditions attached to your actual offer and keep both measures labelled correctly.

For university tuition and entrance awards, use the Carleton overview and official 2026-27 fee schedule. BID and BIT have different fee rows; don't price Industrial Design using a generic Arts total. For a degree comparison, Carleton IMD emphasizes interactive digital work, while OCAD's portfolio guide explains its BDes/BFA options and program distinctions. Ask about the studio sequence, material needs, critique and co-op continuation. Those are concrete differences that matter more than a guessed program acceptance rate.
