OCAD University portfolio admission requirements: compare five studio programs and prepare the right submission

OCAD’s studio degrees share an academic and portfolio process. Ontario entry needs 70% overall and 70% in Grade 12 U English. Fall 2027 portfolios are due February 10. The work you submit depends on the program. Graphic Design, Illustration and Industrial Design have additional published guidance. Compare that guidance before choosing your portfolio.

Academic eligibility is shared, but portfolio selection is central

Ontario applicants need an OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses with at least 70% overall. Grade 12 U English must also be at least 70%. The academic page lists accepted English equivalents, including ENG4U, EWC4U and ETS4U, along with francophone-school equivalents. Applicants educated elsewhere must use their own education-system requirements. English-language proficiency is a separate check where applicable.

OCAD says studio BDes and BFA admission is based primarily on portfolio strength and remains conditional on the academic minimums and documents. A 70% average doesn't guarantee a studio offer. The non-studio BA in Visual and Critical Studies uses a written assignment and academic records instead, so this guide's studio portfolio shouldn't be presented as that BA's requirement. This page compares Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, Drawing and Painting, and Digital Futures. They have different academic content but enough shared application procedure to explain once, with the program-specific differences kept visible below.

Finished work, process evidence and the statement of intent

The general first-year portfolio page asks for eight to ten original finished examples, process work and a statement of intent of no more than 300 words. Your statement explains your interest in the program, influences and what you want to explore. It is part of SlideRoom submission. For each finished piece, the page asks for a 50-word explanation of process, media, concept and purpose.

Process work should connect to several finished examples. It can include sketches, development photos, experiments, writing, research or inspirations. A sketchbook can be submitted as a multiple-page PDF or brief video, and each sketchbook counts as one portfolio item. The page also points to additional design-program guidance and SlideRoom directions. Don't collapse all those instructions into a universal item count if the program-specific brief says something different. The linked design PDF is dated 2024 in its URL; it remains linked by the current page, but should be treated as latest available guidance and checked against the Fall 2027 SlideRoom instructions.

Graphic Design: ten finished examples and visual communication

The linked Faculty of Design guidelines specify ten finished Graphic Design examples with media identified and short explanations. They also ask for process work linked to several finished pieces, which can include drawings, development photographs, storyboards, references or sources. This is more specific than the general eight-to-ten wording. Check how the current program portal wants finished work and the process item organized before final submission.

The four-year BDes studies communication through images, photography and text. Its first-year topics include design process, drawing, communication photography and visual-culture history/theory. Later study adds typography, sustainable design, three-dimensional form and packaging, with research and advanced or experimental typography in upper years. Fourth year centers on a thesis connected to your interests. Compare this with Illustration if you want applied image-making, or GCM at TMU if you want more print-production technology and management. Those comparisons explain the curriculum; they don't prescribe a new portfolio project for you to copy.

Illustration: observational drawing and image-making

The linked design guidelines describe an Illustration portfolio of eight to ten pieces emphasizing two-dimensional work. They discuss creativity, drawing/painting, media, colour, tone and composition. Sketchbooks should show a routine of drawing and development, and each counts as an item. The guidance asks for observational drawing, preferring direct observation over photographs, and mentions life studies if available. Photo-referenced work should show creative departure from the reference.

The PDF says established conventions such as Disney, anime or caricature don't help assess the relevant skills. Read this as program-specific selection guidance, not a prohibition on having those artistic interests. Use original work that lets assessors see what you can observe and create. The Illustration BDes program connects image-making with narrative and applied communication. Its published subjects include drawing, painting, colour and illustration work, with later projects leading to a thesis and professional preparation. If your main interest is open studio-art practice rather than applied illustration, compare Drawing and Painting's BFA before choosing the application destination.

Industrial Design: spatial work and human use

The current program page awards a four-year BDes and lists first-year topics in form/structure, drawing for industrial design and communicating through form. Later topics include emerging technology, three-dimensional drawing, material exploration, design for health and research/innovation. The final year develops a major design project. This gives the degree a focus on objects, materials and experiences rather than primarily graphic messages.

The linked 2024 design guidance welcomes different backgrounds and says a lack of prior three-dimensional work can be explained in the statement. It also asks portfolios in its 3D-program group to include at least two 3D forms among eight to ten examples. Those statements can be difficult to reconcile for a beginner without existing 3D work. Don't erase either one: ask OCAD how the current Industrial Design SlideRoom brief applies to your situation. Forms can include built objects, sculpture, wearable work or material experiments under the published examples. You create them and explain the actual process; a reviewer shouldn't manufacture an admission object for you.

Drawing and Painting: the BFA studio route

Drawing and Painting awards a four-year BFA. Its published first-year description includes introductory painting, foundation studio, drawing across disciplines and art history, with other subject choices. Later study develops drawing/painting approaches and opportunities for experimentation. The program is not simply Illustration with a different degree label: compare its studio questions, course choices and later work before deciding.

The general studio portfolio instructions apply, with any additional current directions supplied through the program portal. The linked Faculty of Design document isn't a Drawing and Painting brief and shouldn't be used to impose Illustration's emphasis on this BFA. Your statement should explain why this program fits the work and interests you already have. That is different from inventing a polished artist biography or exhibition history for an application. Keep process evidence connected to your own finished pieces. If you're choosing between the BFA and a design degree, read both the curriculum and credential so your application and fee planning use the right route.

Digital Futures: a BDes/BFA with code and creative technology

Digital Futures is a four-year honours studio program in OCAD's Faculty of Arts and Science, offering a BDes or BFA. It combines art/design with digital and physical technologies. First-year examples include coding, physical computing, games, drawing, art/code and time-based media. The exact elective choices reflect your interests and the current curriculum.

The second and third years use Atelier studios and research-lab work, including collaborative projects involving software, games, digital art or wearable computing. Fourth year has an individual or group thesis developed over two semesters, with entrepreneurship and digital-leadership study. This is a creative-technology degree, not a conventional Computer Science BSc. Ask which credential route applies to your plan and how the technical work is taught alongside studio practice. General portfolio instructions still matter, but don't copy Industrial Design's linked 3D-program brief onto Digital Futures without a program instruction. For collaborative work, clearly describe your role and keep evidence of your contribution.

Fall 2027 dates, applicant groups and SlideRoom receipt

OCAD's admissions guide recommends January 15, 2027 for Group A applications from current Ontario high-school students. It gives February 1 for Group B applications and February 10 for portfolios. March 1 is the deadline for interim/final transcripts and language tests where applicable. Later final documents have their own July/August dates in the guide. Don't confuse the portfolio upload with proof that the academic conditions are complete.

Apply through OUAC before using OCAD's SlideRoom destination, and wait for the acknowledgement with your OCAD ID. Use the same name/email and include that ID in SlideRoom. The general portfolio page says SlideRoom access opens in December, while the Fall 2027 admissions timeline says November 2026. That is another official-source difference; follow the actual access email and confirm timing with OCAD. Submission has a US$12 SlideRoom fee. Draft or pending portfolios aren't reviewed, and a final submission can't be edited. Check the correct program, files and statements before pressing submit. The page supports several formats and gives a two-to-three-minute limit for video clips.

Feedback is available; third-party writing is not your statement

OCAD offers portfolio-building events, AICAD review and National Portfolio Day feedback. Those opportunities confirm that feedback itself isn't blanket-banned by the checked general instructions. A review can help you see whether your work and applicant-written statement meet the brief. It cannot make someone else's creative work or words yours.

The submission page says: 'The work you are presenting in your portfolio must be of your own creation.' Its application-fraud policy also identifies material 'written by a third party' as grounds for invalidation. Those are authorship rules; don't recast them as a ban on every clarity discussion. You choose the work, document the making process and write the personal response. A teacher or permitted adviser can point out unclear passages or missed limits without supplying a finished answer. If a particular SlideRoom item adds a stricter rule, follow it. Avoid false awards, invented experiences or descriptions of group work that omit other contributors.

Degree-specific costs and experiential opportunities

For tuition and awards, use the OCAD overview. Admissions' approximate amounts are explicitly 2025-26, while Student Accounts supplies 2026-27 schedules. Our 5.0-credit, two-term calculations from those newer schedules are $7,570.59 domestic BA/BFA, $9,482.79 new-cohort domestic BDes and $33,346.79 international. They include listed term fees but exclude program/course and laptop costs. Confirm degree, cohort, credit load and actual bill; these aren't 2027-28 quotes.

The program pages describe placements, industry-linked projects, summer internships, exhibitions and freelance opportunities. They don't establish a universal paid co-op stream or promise employment for every studio student. Ask which experiences are approved for the degree you choose and whether they are paid or credit-bearing. The portfolio will continue to develop during study, but first-year entry uses the current admission brief. Select the program through its curriculum and work, then prepare one accurate application under its own directions.
