Course requirements

uOttawa asks Ontario students for the OSSD with at least six 4U, 4M or DU courses. Criminology names one prerequisite: English 4U (ENG4U) or Français 4U (FRA4U). uOttawa also accepts EAE4U, EAL4U, ETS4U, EAC4U, EWC4U and FLO4U as the language course.

There is no math or science prerequisite. Grade 12 co-op, career and work experience courses do not count toward admission. Your other five courses can be any 4U, 4M or DU courses.

Choose courses you will do well in, since they all feed your average. Map your Grade 12 year with our course planner.

The average you need

uOttawa publishes a minimum admission average, not the average of students admitted. The English program (OXD) lists 75%. The French program (OFI) lists 73%. uOttawa says these are minimums only, may change, and do not guarantee admission.

uOttawa uses your top six 4U, 4M or DU grades, including the prerequisite. The same average decides admission scholarships. uOttawa does not publish a competitive range above the minimum for Criminology.

Work out your number with our Top 6 average calculator. Aim a few points above the minimum so a weak interim mark does not drop you below it.

English, French or French immersion

The catalogue says the program is offered in English and in French. You apply to the language you want with its own OUAC code: OXD for English, OFI for French.

The English requirements page lists a French Immersion Stream, where you take one third of your courses in French. The catalogue also says the French immersion stream is available with this program. The French program page does not list a separate stream.

No essay, portfolio or interview

uOttawa's Criminology requirements list only the language prerequisite and a minimum average. There is no supplementary form, essay, interview or audition. Your grades decide.

Some faculty scholarships at uOttawa need a resume or application, but the Social Sciences $4,000 award for a 92% average does not. It is automatic.

Three fourth year options, and limited places

Every Honours student starts in the course option. You can apply to switch to the research option or the field placement option. Both have limited places, and students are ranked by CGPA.

The research option needs a minimum CGPA of 7.0. The field placement option needs a minimum CGPA of 6.0. The field placement page also asks for at least 72 credits, including 21 CRM credits, after the fall term.

The pages give the timing two ways. The options page says to apply in the first semester of third year. The field placement page says the internal application form is open from the end of October to mid-December each year. These fit together, but confirm the exact date with the department.

Field placement, not co-op

Criminology is not on uOttawa's list of co-op programs in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The list includes nearby programs such as Sociology, Political Science and Conflict Studies and Human Rights.

The work experience here is the field placement. It runs 32 hours a week for one fall or winter term in fourth year, with at least 360 hours. The department says it is unpaid. Placements include work with victims and justice-involved people, research, policy analysis and civilian oversight.
