Course requirements
Carleton asks Ontario students for the OSSD with six Grade 12 courses at the 4U or 4M level. Criminology and Criminal Justice is a Bachelor of Arts major. For all BA majors, the required course is English (ENG4U).
Prerequisite courses must be at the 4U level with no single grade below 60%. Grade 12 co-op work experience credits do not count toward your six courses.
There is no math or science prerequisite. Your other five courses can be any 4U or 4M courses. Plan them with our course planner.
The average you need
Carleton's requirements tool shows a cut-off range of 75% for the Arts (BA) degree. Carleton says the range applies to both your overall average and your prerequisite average.
Carleton also says the overall average needed is set each year, program by program, and that all programs have limited enrolment. It does not publish a separate cut-off or an admitted student average for Criminology and Criminal Justice. Treat 75% as a minimum, not a safe target.
Work out where you stand with our Top 6 average calculator. Keep your ENG4U mark strong, since it is also your prerequisite average.
No essay, portfolio or interview
Carleton lists only courses and an average for BA majors. Criminology and Criminal Justice does not ask for a supplementary form, essay, interview or video.
The only application you may write is for Carleton's Prestige Scholarships, which need an application and a reference letter by March 1. That is for money, not for admission.

What you study
The admissions page describes the degree as built on three disciplines: law, psychology and sociology. You also meet political science, Indigenous studies, and critical race, gender and sexuality studies.
The BA Honours is 20.0 credits. First year includes CRCJ 1000 Introduction to Criminology and Criminal Justice, LAWS 1001 and 1002, and PSYC 1001 and 1002, plus a sociology introduction. Later you take CRCJ 2100 Criminological Theories, CRCJ 3001 Quantitative Methods and CRCJ 3002 Qualitative Methods.
You can add a concentration in Law, Mind and Behaviour, or Sociology. The calendar recommends choosing before second year registration. The calendar caps Criminology and Criminal Justice courses at 15.0 credits in the Honours degree.

Honours or the general BA
The calendar lists two versions of the degree. The B.A. Honours is 20.0 credits. The general B.A. is 15.0 credits. Both come with the same three optional concentrations.
The calendar sets a cap on Criminology and Criminal Justice courses: 12.5 credits in the B.A. and 15.0 in the B.A. Honours. Courses such as CRCJ 3001 and CRCJ 3002 need third year standing in the Criminology BA, so plan your first two years with care.
If you are unsure which version fits your goals, ask the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice before second year.

Career areas Carleton lists
The admissions page lists career areas for graduates. They include drug policy and support services, gender-based violence policy and survivor supports, government and policy, law enforcement and corrections, legal and social policy, parole and probation, and urban policy and harm reduction.
Ottawa matters here. The page says the city is a hub for grassroots, provincial and federal justice organizations, which is where many placements happen.
Practicum, not co-op
Criminology and Criminal Justice is not on Carleton's list of undergraduate co-op programs. Nearby majors such as Law and Sociology are on that list.
The work experience here is a practicum. CRCJ 3901 Practicum in Criminology I places you in an agency for eight hours a week with a three hour seminar. You need third year standing in the BA, a Major CGPA of 6.50 or higher, and permission of the Institute. A second practicum, CRCJ 3902, is also listed.
The admissions page mentions field placements with groups such as the Crown Attorney's Office, criminal law offices and social justice organizations.

Residence, meals and books are extra. Carleton says it can change fees without notice, so check the table again before you pay.
Scholarships
If you are admitted for fall with an admission average of 85% or better, Carleton automatically considers you for a renewable Entrance Scholarship. Carleton must have your full application and all grades by June 15.
Prestige Scholarships need a 90% average or better, an application and a reference letter by March 1. Carleton says it awarded more than 12,600 scholarships and bursaries last year.

How it compares with Law and Psychology at Carleton
Law (BA) and Psychology (BA) are Arts majors too, so the high school rule is the same: ENG4U and the 75% Arts cut-off range. The choice is about what you want to study.
Law has a co-op option. Carleton's co-op page asks Law students for an Overall and Major CGPA of at least 9.00. Criminology gives you law, psychology and sociology in one degree, with a practicum instead of co-op. See our Carleton Psychology guide.
