What you need from Ontario

SFU asks Ontario students for six Grade 12 U or M courses, including English (ENG4U) at 70% or more. For Computing Science, three of them must be ENG4U, Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. The other three come from SFU's approved lists. Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) is recommended but not required.

SFU also lists Grade 11 courses: English (ENG3U), Functions and Applications (MCF3M) or Functions (MCR3U), and a Grade 11 science. It looks at all your approved Grade 11 and 12 courses, with more weight on the required ones.

The admission range

SFU publishes historical acceptance ranges from the past three years. For Computing Science and for Software Systems, both Canadian and international students were admitted with grades in the high 80s to low 90s. SFU says grades at or above the range don't guarantee an offer.

SFU doesn't publish a Computing Science acceptance rate. Our SFU acceptance rate page covers what it does publish, and our computer science requirements guide compares SFU with other schools.

IB, transfer and other routes

IB Diploma students need the full diploma with at least three HL courses, and SFU's minimum for any program is 26 points. For Computing Science you need IB Math Analysis and Approaches at HL or SL, or Applications and Interpretations at HL, plus Biology, Chemistry or Physics at HL or SL. Applications and Interpretations SL doesn't count. A completed diploma earns 30 units of transfer credit.

Students moving from another college or university were admitted with a B to A average over the past three years, or B+ to A on a study visa.

Every applicant must also meet SFU's quantitative skills rule, for example 60% in an approved Grade 11 or 12 math course, and its English language requirement.

Computing Science or Software Systems?

Both are run by the School of Computing Science, and both had the same high 80s to low 90s range over the past three years. Software Systems is a Bachelor of Science major, while Computing Science can be a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts.

The course requirements are the same for both from Ontario and in the IB. Read SFU's calendar for each program's required courses before you choose, and compare other schools in our computer science requirements guide.

Co-op

Co-op is optional in Computing Science. It's required only in SFU's engineering schools. You need three successful work terms for a four-year degree with a co-op designation, and each work term lasts at least 12 weeks or 420 hours of full-time paid work.

Each four-month work term has its own tuition of $932.08 in 2026-27. International students can join co-op too, and normally complete up to four work terms.

Tuition and scholarships

SFU charges tuition by the unit. In 2026-27, domestic students pay $220.61 per unit for most courses and $231.64 per unit for 200, 300 and 400 division Computing Science courses. International students who entered in 2024-25 or later pay $1,262.88 and $1,327.97 per unit.

The Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship is for students with at least 90% in the courses required for admission. For Canadians it includes a $40,000 Computing Science award, paid as 8 payments of $5,000. The international award is worth $140,000. Apply from October 1 to December 15, 2026, with two references due January 31, 2027.

For parents

SFU uses a different application system and dates from Ontario. Your child applies on EducationPlannerBC by January 31, 2027, and SFU's scholarship form closes earlier, on December 15, 2026.

Per-unit pricing means the cost depends on the course load. Upper-year Computing Science courses cost a little more per unit than first-year courses.

If your child wants to live on campus, SFU's residence application is due May 1, 2027, the same day most students must accept their offer.
