Who can apply from high school

Midwifery is a direct entry program, so you can apply from Grade 12. The Midwifery FAQ says the program fully reviews applications from current high school students. It also says a variable number of high school students get offers each year.

The same FAQ encourages every applicant to finish at least a year of university first. It says this helps you prepare for the interview and for Level 1. It also says about 400 people apply each year. McMaster's admission tool lists a target enrolment of 45.

You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a protected person. McMaster's admission tool mentions only citizens and permanent residents, so check with the program if you are a protected person.

Grade 12 courses and grades

Ontario students need at least 85% in each of English 12U, Biology 12U and Chemistry 12U. You also need three other 12U or 12M courses. Your overall average must be at least 85%, based on the three required courses plus your three highest U or M courses.

You can apply while a required course is still in progress. In that case your Grade 11 course in the same subject must show at least 85% by February 1. McMaster says midterm or interim marks will not be reviewed for eligibility. Any offer depends on finishing all Grade 12 prerequisites.

Plan your Grade 12 year with our high school course planner. If chemistry is your weak subject, fix it early. One mark under 85% makes you ineligible.

The average you need

85% is the minimum to be considered. It is not the number that gets you in. McMaster's admission tool says an average in the mid to high 80s has typically been needed to be competitive.

The Midwifery site words it differently. Its admission page says the average in recent years has been in the 85% to lower-mid 80% range. Its FAQ says most applicants chosen for interview were in the 85% to low-mid 80% range. These ranges don't match the tool, so plan for the higher target and confirm with the program.

The survey and the interview

Midwifery needs an online supplementary application called the Identity and Admissions Survey. Every 2027 applicant must submit it by February 1, 2027. Indigenous and Black applicants opt in to the facilitated admission streams through this survey.

Selection has two phases. In Phase 1, McMaster checks your eligibility and ranks applicants on academic achievement. In Phase 2, top-ranked applicants do a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). It has up to 10 timed questions. It assesses qualities such as cultural sensitivity, maturity, teamwork, empathy and communication. You're judged on verbal and written answers. Offers go to the top-ranked applicants based on MMI scores.

McMaster's general supplementary page says Midwifery and Nursing applicants only have to complete Casper once. The Midwifery admission page does not list Casper as a requirement. Ask the program whether Casper applies to you. Our Casper test guide explains the test.

We did not find a published rule on outside help with the survey or interview. Your answers should still be your own.

Dates for Fall 2027

Apply through OUAC as a current Ontario high school student by January 15, 2027. Complete the Identity and Admissions Survey by February 1, 2027. McMaster's admission tool also lists February 1, 2027 as the supporting document deadline. Indigenous applicants in the facilitated stream must also send a Self-identification Application by January 15.

The Future Students program page still shows February 1, 2026 in its note about in-progress courses. The Midwifery site is updated for Fall 2027 applications, so use its February 1, 2027 date. There is one intake a year, in September.

What the program looks like

The degree is a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Midwifery). It runs four years across nine terms and totals 135 units. First-year courses include Anatomy and Physiology (HTHSCI 1DO6), Social Justice and Healthcare (HTHSCI 1C06), Midwifery the Profession I (MIDWIF 1D03) and Introduction to Research Methods and Critical Appraisal (MIDWIF 1F03).

Clinical courses pair a placement with weekly problem-based tutorials. Clinical terms begin in the second term of year two. The FAQ says there are 6 clinical terms of 12 weeks each. The education page says midwifery clinical terms make up four semesters. You'll also train in hospital and with obstetricians.

Co-op and clinical placements

Midwifery has no co-op. McMaster's admission tool says mandatory clinical placements are built into the program instead. Each student is assigned to a midwife preceptor during clinical courses.

The McMaster placement area runs from Oakville to Windsor and Guelph to Niagara Falls. Due to limited placements, you may have to relocate within Ontario. Travel and living costs are yours. You also can't keep a part-time job during clinical terms.

Tuition and costs

McMaster charges Midwifery tuition per term. Its proposed schedule lists Level 1 at $4,213.20 per term for 2026-27 and $4,297.46 per term for 2027-28. If you start in Fall 2027, the 2027-28 rate applies to your first year.

These are domestic tuition rates only. They don't include ancillary fees, residence, or the travel and housing costs of placements. The FAQ says careful financial planning is needed.

Scholarships

McMaster's automatic entrance awards for September 2027 include Midwifery. The McMaster University Entrance Award is $1,000 at 93.00% or higher. The Midwifery achievement award is $500 for 91% to 92.99%. You get one or the other.

The need-based Entrance Bursary ranges from $1,000 to $5,000. Apply on AwardSpring by February 19, 2027.

For parents

This is a small, selective program. Grades only get your child to the interview. The interview decides the offer. The program itself suggests a year of university first, so a plan B matters.

Placements are a real cost. Students may relocate for clinical terms and pay their own travel and living costs.

How it compares with other McMaster health programs

Midwifery is a professional degree that leads to registration. The FAQ says all graduates must apply to the College of Midwives for registration. Nursing is the closest option at McMaster. See our McMaster Nursing guide.

If you want a broad health degree first, see our McMaster Health Sciences guide. The FAQ notes that Toronto Metropolitan University runs part-time and post-baccalaureate midwifery options that McMaster does not offer.
