Course requirements
Concordia's Canadian curricula page asks Ontario students for a high school diploma with at least six Grade 12 U or M courses, including English 4U (Français 4U at a French school). Its Ontario table lists no specific course requirements for the BFA, except Computation Arts with Computer Science.
So there's no math or science gate for film. Pick six courses you can do well in. Use our course planner to plan them.
The grade cut-off
The Film Production page lists a minimum cut-off of C+ for high school applicants, a DEC for CEGEP students and 26 for the IB diploma. Concordia says cut-offs are indicators, they can change with the applicant pool, and meeting them doesn't guarantee a spot.
Concordia's grading table says each program page gives the letter grade, and lists C+ as 67 to 69% for Ontario and most other provinces. It warns that scales vary by school. Concordia does not publish the average of admitted Film Production students. With a portfolio review on top, treat C+ as the floor only.

The portfolio and letter of intent
You must first apply to Concordia online, then submit your portfolio to the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema through SlideRoom. Concordia says the Film Production portal for Fall 2027 opens in October and everything must be final by March 1. Portfolios sent any other way won't be reviewed.
Your moving image portfolio should hold your best work: one or two files, each 5 minutes or less. Use excerpts from longer work, because the jury won't watch past 5 minutes. Indicate your principal role in each piece. Add subtitles if it isn't in English or French. Concordia says it doesn't want a single 10-minute film, scripts, social media reels such as TikTok or Instagram, or treatments of proposed projects.
The letter of intent is 500 to 650 words. Concordia suggests you cover why you're applying, why cinema is your main art form, artists who shaped your work, your goals, and a film idea you'd like to explore.
Concordia's page doesn't include a signed no-help declaration for Film Production. It does ask you to state your own role, and it says it can refuse portfolios that don't follow the guidelines.

Dates for Fall 2027
Film Production is fall entry only. The program page lists a March 1 deadline. The Cinema how to apply page lists March 1st, 2027 for Fall 2027. U.S. and international applicants should apply by February 1 to allow time for immigration papers.
Concordia says it may close admission to a program at any time after the official deadline. You apply on Concordia's own online application before you send the portfolio. Compare dates on our Canadian deadlines page.

What you study
Concordia says a BFA takes three or four years (90 to 120 credits) depending on your background. You enter the Major in Film Production (54 credits). You may apply to move to the Specialization (66 credits) in third year. Students taking FMPR 332 can apply for that transfer by March 1. Concordia strongly recommends French for the Specialization.
The Major includes FMPR 231 Filmmaking I, FMPR 239 Montage I, FMPR 332 Filmmaking II, FMPR 338 Image I and FMPR 340 Sound I. It also requires FMST 220 Film Analysis and one of FMST 201, 202 or 203 Film History. Concordia says you work on making a film every year.

Co-op and internships
Film Production is not a standard co-op program. The calendar lists a C.Edge (Career Edge) option for selected students in the Major or Specialization. Its academic content is the same as the regular program, with recommended professional internships and extension courses. Details sit with Concordia's Institute for Co-operative Education.
The program page also lists professional internships in the film industry, film research and archives, plus exchanges through ISEP.

Tuition for 2026-27
Concordia charges per credit. For Fall 2026 and Winter 2027, Quebec residents pay $103.92 per credit. Canadians from outside Quebec admitted from Fall 2024 on pay $432.85 per credit, which includes a $328.93 government forfaitaire. International students in Fine Arts pay $1010.00 per credit in Fall 2026.
Our estimate, not a Concordia figure: a 30-credit year at the out-of-province rate is about $12,985.50 in tuition alone. Compulsory fees are extra. Concordia's cost of living page puts tuition and compulsory fees for new out-of-province students at $15,080 a year, based on 2026 data.

How it compares to Film and Moving Image Studies
Concordia's Film and Moving Image Studies BFA, formerly called Film Studies, is in the same school. The Cinema how to apply page says it needs no portfolio or letter of intent. It has the same C+ high school cut-off, takes fall and winter entry, and may wait list applicants. It focuses on reading and studying film, with internship ties to Montreal festivals.
If you're torn, you can apply to both. This page covers film making. Our Concordia Journalism guide covers a different media path.

For parents
Out-of-province tuition in Quebec is much higher than the Quebec rate, so budget with the $432.85 per credit figure. Montreal rent and food add a lot. Concordia's cost page shows the totals.
Help your teen start early. The portal opens in October and the deadline is firm. The film work and letter should be theirs, and they must name their role on every piece. See our Concordia guide for campus context.
