Course requirements
York needs an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. For Engineering, five Grade 12 courses are set: ENG4U (English), MHF4U (Advanced Functions), MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors), SCH4U (Chemistry) and SPH4U (Physics). You also need one more 4U or 4M course.
Each prerequisite needs a final grade of at least 70%. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The mid-80s range and the 78% condition
York says applicants with averages in the mid-80s or higher may be considered for Engineering. That's the range to be looked at, not a promise of an offer. York sets the average each year.
Watch the conditions once you have an offer. You need a final average of 78% across the six required courses, and at least 70% in each prerequisite. If you're worried about your grades or an offer condition, York asks you to email the Lassonde admissions team early.
York doesn't publish an engineering acceptance rate. See our York acceptance rate page for what it does publish, and work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

Applying from another province or the IB
Students from British Columbia and Alberta face the same mid-80s range and 78% condition, with their province's English, chemistry, physics and two math courses. Out-of-province high school students apply by March 24, 2027 for a fall start.
IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma students need at least 30 points, with Chemistry and Physics at SL or HL and a qualifying math course. Higher Level courses with a 5 or better can earn transfer credit, up to 30 credits.

A common first year, at Keele or Markham
Every Lassonde engineering student starts with a common first year in applied math, physical sciences, programming and engineering. After first year you choose one of seven majors: Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Software or Space Engineering.
You can take first year at the Keele campus or at the Markham campus through the First Year Engineering Core Program. Markham students move to Keele for second year.
At Keele you can also choose the Engineering Block Model, where you focus on one subject at a time instead of juggling several. York also offers a five-year BEng and BA dual degree in Engineering and International Development Studies.

Dates and winter entry
Ontario high school students apply through OUAC by January 15, 2027 for a September start. York's Engineering page lists no supplementary application.
Engineering also admits first-year students in January. The deadline for a Winter 2027 start is November 18, 2026. Out-of-province and international high school students have a later Fall 2027 deadline of March 24, 2027.

Co-op after second year
Lassonde co-op opens after second year, and you apply in year two. You complete two work periods separated by at least one study term. Each work period can be 4, 8, 12 or 16 months, and the two together must total 12 to 20 months for the co-op designation.
Engineering students need a CGPA of at least 5.0, at least 30 credits at the 2000 level and, from fall 2026, at least 45 credits completed with 18 or more still to go. You return to full-time study after each work period.
Lassonde charges a one-time $200 registration fee when you're accepted, then $500 for each four-month work term. Work terms are paid, and engineering co-op hours can count toward your P.Eng. licence.
Lassonde also runs an entrepreneurial co-op stream with its BEST program, where you build a business with a mentor, and a paid summer research program through LURA and NSERC USRA awards.

Tuition and scholarships
York estimates 2026-27 Engineering tuition at about $10,600 for domestic students and $47,000 for international students, based on 36 credits in first year. York says domestic fees rose 2% from 2025-26. Supplementary fees and residence are extra.
York's Automatic Entrance Scholarship needs no application. It's renewable with an 8.0 GPA, worth $4,000 to $14,000 in total. York says it awards over $20 million in entrance scholarships and awards a year, and some larger ones, such as the President's Scholarships ($8,400 a year for four years), need no application.
Lassonde students can also be nominated for a $120,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship. The school nomination deadline is January 27, 2027. Check your average on our Top 6 average calculator.
For living costs, York estimates $9,000 to $13,000 for an eight-month residence room and $4,350 to $8,000 for a meal plan. Health and dental coverage is about $359 for domestic students.

For parents
York's offer comes with conditions. A student admitted in the mid-80s still needs a 78% final average and 70% in each prerequisite, so second semester counts.
The common first year means your child picks a major after a year of engineering, not at 17. If they start at Markham, plan for the move to Keele in second year.
