BA or iBA

York offers Political Science as a BA and an iBA, both through the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at Keele. Both use OUAC code YUE. You can start in fall, winter or summer, full time or part time.

The iBA is the international version. On top of the major, it needs AP/ANTH 2300 Intercultural Training Skills, at least 18 credits in a modern language, at least 9 credits of internationally oriented courses and at least one full term abroad at a York exchange partner.

Glendon is a different program. York lists Political Science / Science politique at Glendon as a related program, not as the same degree. This page covers the Keele program only.

What you will study

York describes the program as the study of governments, judicial systems and political parties, and of how power works. Courses focus on global politics, political economy and power, international development and inequality, social justice, democracy and security.

The department says its instructors are experts in Canadian politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and women and politics. Classes lean on discussion. You will build research, writing and analysis skills, and learn to use data to support an argument.

Course requirements

You need the OSSD with ENG4U and five more 4U or 4M courses. There is no math or history requirement.

Since most of your average comes from your strongest courses, choose ones you do well in. Courses with lots of reading and essays, such as history or world issues, are good practice for a writing-heavy degree. Plan your year with our course planner.

The average you need

York says applicants with averages in the low to mid 70s or higher may be considered. To keep your offer, you need a final academic average of 70%. York sets the overall average each year by program, and admission is not guaranteed.

York does not publish a specific cut-off, an admitted range or an acceptance rate for political science. Aim for the mid 70s or above, and check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

You can also pair political science with another subject. York offers an Honours Double Major, a Double Major Linked BA with interdisciplinary programs, and a Major/Minor. There is a Specialized Honours iBA that needs 54 political science credits.

Co-op

York's program page lists co-op as an applied learning option. You do not choose co-op on OUAC. After first year, the Co-op and Career Centre contacts you about applying.

For Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, you must be in an honours degree, study full time and have 30 to 93 credits when you apply. You need at least 45 credits by your first work term and a cumulative GPA of at least 5.0. You also must attend an information session and a resume workshop. York's Co-op Program page lists work terms of 4, 8, 12 or 16 months. The Future Students co-op page mentions postings of four, eight or 12 months. Confirm the options with the Co-op and Career Centre.

LA&PS co-op fees are a $200 enrolment fee plus $500 for every 4 months of work, for a total of $1,200 to $2,700.

For parents
