How U of A Engineering admits students

If you apply from high school, you're considered for the foundational year of Engineering. The U of A assesses you on the average of five required Grade 12 subjects: English 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 31, Chemistry 30 and Physics 30, or their equivalents.

Admission is competitive, and meeting the minimum doesn't guarantee a place. The U of A also asks for at least a 70% average across the five required subjects before it calculates anything else.

All Engineering programs listed in the calendar are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, so graduates can work toward a professional engineering licence.

Applying from Ontario

The U of A's Ontario chart matches English 30-1 to ENG4U, Mathematics 30-1 to Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Mathematics 31 to Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry 30 to SCH4U and Physics 30 to SPH4U. Your admission average for Engineering uses those five courses only.

That's different from the Top 6 averages most Ontario universities use. A weak physics or calculus mark counts in full, and a strong elective doesn't help. Plan your courses with our course planner.

Data Management (MDM4U) maps to Mathematics 30-2, and the U of A says it can't be presented together with Advanced Functions. Engineering needs the 30-1 and 31 math courses.

The mid 80s to low 90s trend

The U of A doesn't publish exact cut-offs. It shows admission-average ranges from the last three admission cycles, and for Engineering that range is the mid 80s to low 90s.

The U of A assesses applications on a rolling basis from October 1 to August 31, and it can adjust what counts as competitive during that time. It suggests listing a second-choice program with a lower historical range.

The U of A doesn't publish an Engineering acceptance rate. See our University of Alberta acceptance rate page for what it does publish, and compare schools in our engineering requirements guide.

Dates and how to apply

You apply on the U of A's own application, and the non-refundable fee is $150. The Fall 2027 application opened October 1, 2026, and the deadline for most programs, including Engineering, is March 1, 2027.

Self-report your final high school marks in the application by April 30, 2027. Offers made before April 1 must be accepted by May 1, 2027, and your own deadline appears in Launchpad. Outstanding high school documents are due August 1, 2027.

Engineering has no supplement, interview or portfolio. Everyone needs English language proficiency, which most Canadian students meet with three years of full-time study in English.

Your first year and choosing a discipline

All first-year engineering students follow a common curriculum. It covers chemistry, mathematics, physics, computing, English for engineers, engineering mechanics and an introduction to the profession.

In March of that foundational year, you choose your preferred engineering discipline and pick the traditional or co-op stream. Both streams have the same academic requirements. The faculty also offers first-year Engineering in French.

Other ways into U of A Engineering

You don't have to start in Edmonton. The U of A admits students who finish a one-year Engineering Transfer Program at partner institutions in Alberta and British Columbia. Graduates of Engineering Technologist Diploma programs can also be considered.

Students with earlier post-secondary study, at the U of A or elsewhere, are admitted only as space allows. Mature students who haven't finished high school are assessed like high school applicants, on the same required Grade 12 subjects, with English counted only if it's on their transcript.

International students should use the U of A's competitive averages and grade conversions for their own curriculum.

Engineering co-op

Co-op students finish two academic years before their first work term, then alternate study and work. Most co-op programs include one fall, one winter and three summer work terms.

Because co-op students work and study year-round, the U of A treats them as full-time for the whole academic year, from July 1 to June 30. Changes to the work-term sequence need the co-op office's approval.

Tuition and scholarships

For Canadian citizens and permanent residents in 2026-27, Engineering courses cost $1,123.04 for each three-credit course. Most other three-credit courses cost $729.36, at a fee index value of $121.56.

International students who started in Fall 2026 have a guaranteed Engineering tuition of $49,953 a year. The Board of Governors approved a 5.5% increase for new international undergraduates in Fall 2027. The Fall 2027 dollar figure isn't published in these pages yet.

Admission-based entrance awards are automatic. One form, due January 10, 2027, covers application-based awards such as the National Achievement Scholarship, $30,000 over four years for top out-of-province Canadians. Use our Top 6 average calculator to see how your Grade 12 marks add up.

For parents

The U of A uses five specific courses, not a Top 6. Check your child's Grade 12 plan includes both MHF4U and MCV4U, plus chemistry and physics.

The U of A's March 1, 2027 deadline is later than Ontario's January 15, but its scholarship form closes on January 10, 2027. Indigenous students who don't meet the competitive average can start through the Transition Year Program.
